Art Prof: Create & Critique

This video shows a color chart mixing exercise based on complementary color pairs, using purple and yellow. This color chart is very effective in terms of training your eye to see subtle shifts of color, to develop a more sensitive color mixing technique, and mixing different levels of saturation with the opposite color instead of relying on straight white and black out of the tube.
Painting demo in gouache by Art Prof Clara Lieu.

I did the exercise bu sadly I didn't had enough white 😂 Anyway I did the graph and a drawing, I didn't painted with gouache for 5 years (or more) , and for the time I was painting I really released the stress, and didn't think about anything else. Thank you so much for sharing your skill and help us take a break of all this pandemic news. I shared my exercise on instagram hope you will see it 😊 Kisses from Portugal and thank for making me use my materials that were collecting dust in the shelves 😜

@@artprof was forgotten how much I actually enjoyed to paint with gouache, I have the brand used one the video, but at the art school I would also buy the brand 'Lefranc and Bourgeois', it has a really creamy texture, kind of similar with the oil paint consistency ( I don't know if it's cheaper everywhere, but it is on Europe, because it's a French brand). It's a struggle to find good gouache 😂

@@viiIeiraS oh, fantastic that you use Lefranc et Bourgeois, I have a stash of this in paint palettes, dried, nearly all colours except a sharp magenta and a purple are rewettable and creamy after over 40 years! But no where stocks them in my country :(. The work I made with them over the years is still good with no fading. I would love to see your work….

Her and years ago I had a little book called the methuen handbook of colour that taught me a lot. I tried to get a copy again and read that it is now lik gold dust because the plate for it got destroyed in a fire back forty or more years ago! I h been looking for an alternative anything about colour when your video popped up, and delighted me. I started off with gouache and airbrush because I was so scared of using a paintbrush. But it was a noisy process! I have just returned to some graphite tonal work I did ages ago and want to redo it with subtle colour, and did not know where to begin, it involves 24x7x4 tiny gradations, I don’t even know how may that is, but it give a remarkable three dimensionality when done. I am not at all certain I will succeed with the colour version! But the fact that I can see all the variations on your mixing chart, especially if I just shut my eyes for a few seconds and open them, and all the greens and oranges and blues and yellows are there! So now I can see that to make my piece I will have to do exactly what you have done here at least 24 times over. Aaaagh! My son says it will take a month to do, but now I think with your help it could be less…. I am using acrylics, and oddly enough it is a good basics set that is most suitable, or a soft body. The rest are just too crazily pigmented to do the tiny steps like you can do with gouache. So now I think after watching this video that really the choice of primaries is really important though I know you can use all sorts of triads as a starting point and in a way if you are painting from mixes that choice is going to determine a colour mood. I loved this video! So am now off to see whether the most neutral blue yellow and red will be best for my needs or whether I need to look for cyan magenta and yellow. Art Prof, I wish your cameras could capture the subtle darker shades as well. PS thank you for reminding me of Munsell. Your mixes are awesome, as is your colour vision.

It would be helpful if you used the pigment numbers as well as the trade names of the colours. Also, are you using a titanium white or a zinc white? I'd like to see a video with this done using the true primaries: cyan, magenta, yellow. I really watch these types of videos out of curiosity to see how different folks approach colour. I'm fortunate that I've always had an innate ability to see what colours are in a mix, even before I knew anything at all of colour theory. Sometimes when I read about colour theory I find myself getting confused because it seems inefficient to use words to describe something that is visual. To me colour mixing is a totally abstract and wordless activity.

A quick comment, colour wheels and colour charts need to be done for the medium that you’re working with. Acrylic, oil, gouache, watercolour, etc., all have different end points, mix differently, etc. It’s important to know that even if you switch from one acrylic manufacturer to another, that you deal with a colour chart to know how the colours mix.

That's a great tip! You're right, all paints mix differently. Making color studies can help you figure out the medium better, and you get a great guide out of it! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

You can get a set of Winsor and Newton gouache that has Primary red, Primary Yellow, Primary Blue, Perm. Green Middle, Ivory Black and Zinc White for a pretty good deal sometimes, especially on Amazon. I think I got it for like around $25 for 6 14ml tubes. Sometimes it's a bit more, but if you keep an eye out they seem to go on sale a lot, and it's perfect for this!

Prof lieu, I know you don’t paint in acrylic, but I use the “liquitex” and “basics” brand (for acrylic) would that be considered a good brand? I have been using them for i while so I might’ve gotten used to them, and just for comparison I got a Windsor and Newton tube for comparison and they’re kinda the same but maybe I just can’t tell the difference 😂
@artprof
@artprof 3 жыл бұрын
I've used the Liquitex "basics" acrylic, it's not my fav acrylic paint as it's a little drippy for my taste. I do think the W&N acrylics have a lot more body compared to the Liquitex, but honestly it really depends on the person. Golden has very good quality acrylics, but they're not cheap! -Prof Lieu
@artprof
@artprof 3 жыл бұрын
Acrylic is my primary medium, and I prefer Liquitex over W&N, but similar to Clara, it's about the body- I prefer medium body over the heavier body acrylics. Liquitex Basics are a fine paint to learn how to paint with. Once you feel ready to expand, Golden is the best brand if you can afford it. There is a huge difference in quality between Golden and Liquitex Basics. -Lauryn (Art Prof Teaching Artist)
