I'd imagine there has to be a surreal or dreamlike feeling to walk through a ship that is 80%(?) identical to your own while occasionally stepping into rooms that are utterly different than what you're accustomed to.

One can't understate the importance of doughnuts as a morale booster. In my corporate office experience whenever there was leftover food from lunch meetings or team events the doughnuts ALWAYS got eaten quicker than leftover veggie/cheese plates.

They also serve a practical purpose they are very portable, last a few days if needed high calories, and in a long general quarters situation allow a feeding of the crew though primitive while at stations... a few folks from the galley ca.n distribute the highly portable treat easily...

During reactivation I did several jobs in the Supply office (second deck, across from the starboard serving line). Got to know the Supply Officer well and he was a really nice guy. Afterwards, every time he spotted me walking through the mess decks, he'd ask if I were busy. If I had time for a break, he'd call a Mess attendant and have him get two donuts and a pot of coffee and we'd shoot the breeze for a few minutes. As far as I know, New Jersey didn't lack for donuts then.

Given the prior example of MoNet, I'm disappointed there wasn't a sign somewhere identifying that compartment as the MoNut Shop. Speaking of food and stuff on board, and I recognize that this is a terrible segue, but a suggestion for a video topic occurred to me earlier: how pest control gets done on the battleship, both as a museum and when she was in service. What with having her parked on the riverfront in a built-up area, I would think you'd be waging a constant battle to repel boarders.

Every mooring line had a rat guard, a close-fitting metal disc or cone which prevented rats from climbing past it, fastened around the line several feet away from the pier so rats couldn't jump to the line behind it. I watched rats run up mooring lines from the pier, but never saw one get past the rat guard. Never saw a rat or mouse onboard ship. No there weren't any cats onboard.

A testament to how ships of the the same class (obsessively with identical layouts) are modified individually over time. I remember visiting other fleet tugs when I served on the USS Cocopa (ATF-101) and being amazed when I encountered blocked passageways, repurposed compartments and different equipment. I never served on a ship with a separate bakery, let alone a doughnut shop. On my ships, the galley was turned into the bakery at night for bread, pastries, cakes, pies and, yes, doughnuts.

That brings back both great and awful memories of USS Enterprise. The bakery was in the aft galley, just forward of Reactor Division's main berthing space. Early in the morning everything on the 2nd deck back aft smelled like freshly baked bread. Then they put all the bread and buns in what we called the 'Bread Hardening' compartment. The sliced bread wasn't too bad, but the hamburger and hotdog buns you'd get at lunch and dinner were hard as rocks. Taking a bite of hot dog held the very real threat of cut gums and broken teeth. I don't know how many times I walked past the bakery on the way to a 0400 watch and was treated to the fantastic smell of fresh bread. That little touch of home would stick with you through the morning, then you would finish up in the plant and head to lunch, only to be bitterly disappointed when you got to the galley and heard the clank of a bun dropping onto your tray.
@SomeRandomHuman717
@SomeRandomHuman717 Ай бұрын
It was the radiation from the Reactor Division sailors hardening the bread.
@dgax65
@dgax65 Ай бұрын
@@SomeRandomHuman717 I got significantly more radiation exposure than the bread and I didn't solidify in 6 hours. They just didn't use any preservatives and there was a lot of airflow in that compartment. All the bread and buns were kept in wire racks, so that airflow really dried them out. There is a fine line in baking bread where you don't want to wrap or enclose the loaf before it cools. If you do it too soon, you get condensation which will cause mold. Leave it too long and the bread will dry completely. I'm not kidding about the burger and hotdog buns. They had a crust like a Saltine cracker.

@duanem.1567

That was because the ship was in reserve, being maintained for future use. You can't keep a ship dehumidified if you have a lot of doors and hatches open for tours, and you can't keep small vitial parts that may be needed when the ship is reactivated, if tourists are pilfering them as souvenirs. Plus all sorts of things need to be modified to make a tour route safe for civilians. It's uncommon for a mothballed ship to allow anyone onboard at all.

That bakery looks like a working bakery, best way to exhibit authenticity is with authentic use. A museum ship could be a serious asset to the community by opening its working spaces to working people: open small galleys as commissary kitchens, bring the bakery to life with delicious smells, show up in local grocery stores, offer classes. A battleship has spaces for a city's worth of amenities, how many could come alive? Convert a space on Battleship New Jersey to offer Missouri Cure Doughnuts... I would hesitate before disagreeing with Ryan, but I don't agree with his statement that the whole ship smells like ship. I visited New Jersey in early June and I swear that the bakery smelled like bread. Maybe it was some psychological trick, but it was very distinct. The rest of the ship does indeed smell like ship. I've been touring and visiting Navy ships for over 40 years and I think they pretty much all smell alike, both active and museum. The one exception was a boomer that I visited that had just returned from deterrent patrol a few hours earlier. It had a serious funk. That visit was in 1977 and the memory hasn't faded.

How much room above a person's head does such a mike need? There is often very little overhead space in a Navy ship because of all the pipes and ductwork hanging from the ceiling..

Question have you ever ventured into the outboard ballast tanks? Just watched a video by the USS Iowa group of them going into one of the tanks. Very awesome & interesting going into a 40' void that's never visited!
