Yesterday during the URC match between the Bulls vs Lions, we witnessed a masterclass on defence by Henco van Wyk. He once again showcased his World Class tackling technique and if it wasn't for him, the Lions would've gotten destroyed by the Bulls. He single handedly held them into the game with his tremendous work ethic. He made 2 try saving tackles in the game and almost made a third when he had a ankle tap on Canan Moodie but unfortunetely his teammates couldn't catch up and help him after Henco brought Moodie to the ground. But in making the ankle tap, he showed that he even has more gas than Moodie, which nobody expected.
Then we have his amazing tackle on Stedman Gans, where the Bulls had a 3 to one overlap, with Henco being the only defender of the Lions. If he does not make the exact correct read in that situation, the Bulls score an easy try. Not only does Henco make the perfect read, he absolutely obliterates Gans in the tackle, and then instantly gets on his feet and forces a turnover. There is simply no other player in rugby that could do what Henco did. Then to just make things better, afterwards, the Bulls get another counter attack, and Henco again is the player who shuts it down and prevents them from going out wide to use an overlap. I've said this time and time again. Henco is a weapon on defence, he is quickly becoming the best defensive 13 in rugby. He already is the best in South Africa. If he does not get picked for the Springboks, then I don't know what to say. He's hands down the best 13 in the country, and it's not even close at the moment.

What Henco has got going for him in terms of bok set up is his speed. With the rush defence we have - the 13 has to be quick to ‘close the net’ on the opposition midfield. Kriel was blitz in the WC and that’s partly why our defence was so solid. We really do have some awesome talent coming through 🎉

The title of this video is wild. Strength of opposition and stakes in a competition matters. We just watched Pieter Steph do what he did in a World Cup Final.. But here we go with "The Best Defender in Rugby". Henco looks promising, but can we wait until he does it on a bigger stage before he is crowned.

Nope i've seen enough. I'm talking about his tackling technique and his rugby IQ. Not a lot of people in rugby better than him. I mean he's smaller than most players, yet he tackles the hell out of anyone. PSDT is a big boy, he doesn't really need technique to make dominating hits (although he still has incredible technique regardless, which makes him great). Henco has shown this technique since his schoold days and has gotten even better. Not to mention some of the hits he makes where he swings around a ball carrier, tackles him and in the same process gets back to his feet within a second, to get turnovers, that is something only he does in rugby.

@@tasanalytics Strength of opposition matters. I see the potential. But these highlights montages don't show him doing it to some of the quickest, explosive and slippery players like your Reiko Ioane's, Ardie Savea's or Mark Telea's on slippery surfaces (requiring a different technique). The hyperbole just seems like a lot too soon. There's a massive difference between a good provincial player and the best international players. The 'Best' or 'World Class' is the 1% of the 1%. It is tested and proved at the highest level against the best opposition. Looking forward to see how he looks against Leinster..
@tasanalytics

@@ChristopherRensburg That's a fair point, obviously it would be ideal to sere him up against the very best. But we have to realize, the URC is the top competition in which SA teams are competing. We're not in the Premiership or Super Rugby. At the end of the day, Henco can only play against who is in front of him. But from what I've seen, this is how he's been playing ever since his school days, he's always the best defender on the field. I actually think his style of defence is well suited against a player like Mark Telea, because Henco focuses so much on technique. I'm not going to lie, I would love to see that battle, or if he could tackle someone like Kolbe, that is one why to test yourself. But yeah, it's going to be great to see him against Leinster, but I think they're probably going to send a 2nd team here since they're playing in SA. But to be fair, a 2nd team from Leinster is not your normal 2nd team. At the end of they day, I just hope Henco gets a fair shot to compete for the 13 jersey for SA. The only way we will get to see if he can play at that level, is if he actually does get playing chance their. From what I've seen, I think he can, but we'll only know when we see it.

@tasanalytics

@@mikezog1030 Yes it's his acceleration that makes him impressive. That's why I mentioned, I think over 40 meters, I don't think anyone can outrun him. I'm sure Moodie will win a 100m foot race, but doubt he'll be able to win Henco over 40 meters. That's why Henco is so good on defence going from sideline to sideline, he knows how to use thjat to his advantage. As for player 12, he actually did play 12 quite a lot in his u/20 season for the Lions and did amazing there. I would love to see him play there for the Lions, because that would mean he actually gets to touch the ball on attack and I think he can be super effective, much like Damian de Allende, just with better defence, and He can actually pass as well. But yeah, for some reason the Lions refuse to even try that switch. But wouldn't be surprised if Henco ends up at 12 for the boks one day. Although I just like him at 13, he seems natural there and knows how to defend, it's all natural to him.

Funny, i watched this match and when i saw this clip i still thought to myself "this is going to make a highlights/best of real on TAS". Serious prodigy. Only concern is, we have so much young talent coming through, someone is going to have to take a backseat (or we lose more players to overseas teams). Moodie and Hartzenberg are just two that come to mind. Either way, its exciting times in SA Youth atm.

I watched this game and specifically kept an eye on HVW. People are ranting and raving about ""Weapon X" but i have watched him for the last year or so and im just not convinced. These are literally his only moments he showed promise in this game. The rest of the time he looked as if he had a love affair with the touchline - shifting out and not getting involved. You barely hear his name 5 times per game. Might be the Lions game plan not suiting him but i would like to him get involved more on attack or else just move to a better franchise. I want to see the "Weapon X" everyone is talking about in all facets of the game. 3-4 great tackles a game doesnt warrant higher honours imo.

Okay so you said you watched this game, I take your word for it. So you would agree with me, that throughout the entire game of 80 mins, you saw with your own eyes, how Henco gets the ball literally ONLY 1 time? You would notice that Marius Louw has the worst hands in rugby, and never passes because he always loses control of the ball. So here is my question, pleasee xplain to me, how Henco can do anything on attack, when he literally never gets the ball in a game? Is it his fault his teamate can't catch and pass a ball? The Lions are badly coached on attack and they simply don't use their backine, despite it being one of the best in the URC. Is that his fault or his attacking coach? Then you say you watched the game, but you add this "The rest of the time he looked as if he had a love affair with the touchline - shifting out and not getting involved", you state that as if he shifts to the wing to not get involved, which is a lie. His role on defence is to defend the 13 and 14 channel, you'll notice in the clip of him destroying Gans, his wing was nowhere to be seen. Henco was alone against 3 attacking players, with no defenders to help him. Yet he somehow creates a turnover in that situation, in what should've been a walk in try for the Bulls. Then you say, it's him not getting involved. He literally saved a try because of his work rate. There is not a lot of players in rugby that would do what Henco did in that situation and still get a turnover. Where i 100% agree with you, is this "Might be the Lions game plan not suiting him but i would like to him get involved more on attack or else just move to a better franchise" Because the Lions simply refuse to use him on attack, which is stupid because Henco's attack is even better than his defence, and his defence is world class. Go look at the URC stats, Henco in in the top 10 attacking stats in a lot of stuff like clean breaks, defenders beaten etc. But he is not even close in the top 100 of Ball Carries. This means he is super effective with the very little ball he actually does get. Not to mention he is a top 10 try scorer in the URC, with those limited amount of carries. So I do agree with you, if Henco played for the Stormers, he would be top 5 in every single attacking despite, as well as defending stat. Where I dissagree with you "3-4 great tackles a game doesnt warrant higher honours imo", I think in the Springboks system, defence is way way way more important than what you do on attack. It's about work rate and everything else comes second. When Lukyano started, he was a defensive centre that knew how to read a game, and his attacking skills only came to light a few years into him playing for the Springboks. If you can't tackle or defend, there is no way Rassie will select you top play for the boks, especially if you're playing 13, which is the most important position for a rush defence that the boks play. The "Weapon X" on attack is there, it's just the Lions that refuses to use him in attack. You'll see when he eventually plays for the boks, his attack is on a different level than his defence, and that is saying a lot, as his defence is already one of the best in rugby. There is no centre in SA at the moment, that comes close to his defence on the form he is now.
@iamnemo1943
@iamnemo1943 3 ай бұрын
@@tasanalytics Thats exactly what im saying. Im hearing about how good he is but havent seen his attack much. And i agree with you on his defence. Its absolutely solid. I'm not saying he should not get selected for the boks but a player cannot be selected on his reputation and a few good moments per game. And again thats not his fault. Hopefully selectors at the bokke will look past that and get him involved a bit more.
@tasanalytics
@tasanalytics 3 ай бұрын
@@iamnemo1943 That's fair, and I can understand why non-Lion fans would say that as you obviously not going to watch every single game from all the other SA teams as most fans focuses on their own team, and there is nothing wrong with that. But yeah, it's frustrating because it really gets overlooked as to how badly the Lions are coached on attack. On defence they're great, but they just have no creativity on attack. But hopefully he gets a fair chance to compete for the 13 jersey for the Boks. As we all of a sudden have some great talent at the position.

I've seen a lot of youngsters and new talent being hyped up by such clips, only to suffocate when it comes to the big leagues or games. His time will come. Right now, he must wait his turn. I don't see him playing before Am, or Moodie. We also have Estherhuizen in the mix. The Boks league is different and I think on e needs to be really different to fit in. For that matter, there's probably a scrum half who can run faster than him, with a better work rate in the Boks mix.

All I'll say is this, as a massive fan of Moodie, people don't realize Henco was the reason Moodie had to switch to wing. He outplayed him at 13 ever since high school days. Henco might not be as fast in a 100m spring, but over a distance of 40 meters, Henco is quicker than him. But I'll say what I always say, I hope they both play for the boks, Moodie at Wing and Henco at 13. Moving Moodie back to 13 just wouldn't be smart, he's natural at wing and great on defence there. In his few games at 13 for the boks, Moodie showed he is not as good on defence, although he is great on attack. Henco is on a different leven when it comes to defence. So I would rather just play them both in the same team like with the u/20 bok side where Henco was 13 and Moodie 14 and the two of them were so good together with their defence.
