@@Guitargate no thank you my friend. Its as if Derek was transported to Neptune and was the only person in the arena. This is an example of objective greatness. I just want to add a word of encouragement to your day. I've played guitar for nearly 3 decades and what I have learned is that the undefinable “magic” of certain players is what keeps me coming back. It keeps me digging beneath the surface to see what I’m missing. I can’t thank you enough for the work you put into your channel. Most don’t realize what it takes to produce content like you do. This one hit me particularly hard as this song has a lot of personal meaning to me. By the end of this video I was in tears, as I am every time I listen to this track in various versions. I love your break down and I love the fact you recognize when magic happens. There is no definite definition of what happened, but when it happens you’re left with chills. And you get it. I have watched many of your videos, but this is the first time commenting. I should have before now, but this one moved me to do so. Thanks again and I look forward to every one of your videos that come out. At least from my perspective your work is appreciated and never taken for granted. Thank you sir.

Me and a buddy have been huge fans of Derek since the DTB/ABB days. We both played guitar in the same band and we've probably seen him live about 20 times together just geeking out to him. During college, ABB was playing up at Boyne Mountain in Michigan and after the incredible show, we were walking to our car, which went past the lot where their tour buses were parked. We peered over to see if they were back there and we saw Derek walking into his bus. We were about 30 yards away behind a fence/rail. He noticed us looking at him (just the two of us around) and after about a minute in the bus, he came back out and just walked the 30 yards straight over to us. Went completely out of his way to come chat to a couple of 19 year olds that were clearly in awe of him. I don't remember what was said because we were in such shock, but I'll never forget that moment.

Well, I've seen them every year they've come through Charlotte for the past 5 years. There was one show where Susan's in-ear monitors malfunctioned. So she left the stage to go get it fixed. Derek looked at the band, nodded his head and off they went. It felt magical. The band built up to this incredible crescendo in an Allman-esque, jazz fusion mountain of music. I was overwhelmed with excitement because of how special that moment felt. I'll never forget it. Still got my tickets from the postponed show last year for this summer. Can't wait.

You are so humble about it. You are a bada** in your own right. I’ve tried picking up guitar several times throughout my life with little luck. I plan to give it one more shot and when I buy one later this month I plan on joining your website community for lessons and motivation.

The beauty of this tune, and what moves me the most, is how the intensity of Derek’s solo meets the intensity of Susan’s vocal crescendo. I’ve heard Derek say that they build many of their tunes to showcase Susan’s voice, but he’s being falsely modest because only his guitar voicing can meet and compliment Susan’s incomparable vocal mastery. Hat tip to you Michael for a very satisfying analysis of a powerful tune executed by masters.

Susan is the only singer who could successfully front that band; she is basically the only singer I can think of whose vocal strength and power can match that band's intensity when they really start cooking. Anyone else would fall way short of reaching that power like she does.

Your knowledge of music and music theory is well above what most average musicians, myself included, can comprehend. When guys like Derek play, I wonder if they think in terms of notes and chords, major and minor, thirds and fifths etc...or if they have just played so much that they hear a sound in their head and can just instinctively play what they're hearing without even thinking about it. The instrument just becomes an expressive extension of their mind, body and soul.

If it's any consolation I was working at a sawmill there was a fluke accident and something happened in my hand Soni got taken immediately to a Dr office where he assessed my hand and figured it was just dislocated and tried over and over dislocating and popping my parts of my finger in and out of the socket but it kept just curling back up and it wasn't dislocated st all it was snapped tendon in my finger that he fully ripped apart trying to out back in the socket. I got sent to the best specialist around and options were surgery and not be able to use and bend a finger ever again or have to wear a splint for 4 months straight with my finger hyper extended and i did that and then 5 months of physio just to be able to play but i can't control my finger all of the time it doesn't listen and pops and just doesn't work like it used to so I can still play I guess but I can't get it to do what I know and it knows it has to do. I probably would have been better off by ever picking up a guitar again there are some times I can't even try things because it feels like my finger is going to just snap apart again and curl up into a hook shape. It's so frustrating and I wasn't ever amazing but I could play. Now I have trouble with open chord songs and playing the most basic things I've tried to just not use that finger but it's in the way I almost would have been better just having it take down to the first knuckle and having a nub

I’ve got tickets to see them on back to back nights at red rocks July 30 and 31 and I can’t wait to be there. After covid, after all this, to see him, I’m so excited

I've got tix as well. There will definitely be a special energy to those shows (moreso than usual, even). Very excited to see Gabe Dixon open up with his own set, too.

Only caught him once live But it was a heater. July 3rd 2004, The Gorge Amphitheatre. Robert Hunter, Then ABB, and The Dead. Double dose of Warren Haynes and Derek came out for Lovelight and After midnight. Damn good time.

[head shaking] Susan Tedeski can sing the phone book and make it emotional. As for Mr. Trucks, he's from another planet. I don't think there's any amount of theory is going to get me to play with that emotion, accuracy and creativity. I don't play slide either, but I'm sure that among his peers, he's at the top of the heap. Man! What were the key strokes you used to rewind? That's one of the most frustrating thing about learning on KZfaq.

My favorite Derek Trucks moment isn’t necessarily a solo but a conversation he had with Warren Haynes. I can’t remember the exact date of the show but I want to say it was from the Beacon run from ‘06. But it’s the cherry on top of an incredible 29 minute Black Hearted Woman. Said moment comes when the band is coming back on after drums. He plays a lick, Warren plays a lick, they go back and forth a bit and then into the end jam. (The one that kinda sounds like the Other One.) I was out camping the night I heard it and it blew my mind.

Derek's attack on the slide is insane. I have not seen him live with his Band but I have seen him live many times with ABB and he and Warren would light up that stage. Derek has a lot of Duane in him but he is without a doubt one of the best slide guitarists on the planet. He has his own sound very much too. Jam Bands have soul and they show it all the time. If you love Derek, I would suggest Live at The Beacon Theater 2003 The first solo Derek on "Ain't Wastin Time No More" is killer, every note. The whole show was excellent, I was there and will never forget, I got chills.
