The sheath is such a large factor in how to integrate a fixed blade into EDC. I'm interested in adding a TOPS little bugger into my rotation.

Your pants can help a lot. I EDC an ESEE 4HM with 511 pants, and the sheath hangs off the belt and gets tucked into the pocket. It's a perfect combo.
@andrewlong5419
@andrewlong5419 2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree, the sheath is almost as important to me as the knife itself. I edc a fixed blade in the Delta Sheath. It's a leather sheath the clips inside the pocket with a utili-clip. The sheath doesn't move and I've never had an issue with retention though I won't say it's as good as kydex for retention. It's biggest down fall is it's bulky in the pocket compared to a folder. But I use it too hard at work to use a folder. And the massive difference in ease of re-sheathing is worth the extra bulk. And I carry a smallish knife (bradford gairdian3) so it's not that bulky.

ESEE4, every day for the last 4 years, I use the spring clip to carry 5 o clock IWB ( inside the waist band) and appendix CCW. The sheath disappears and it's so satisfying when I need a sharp chisel, prybar , 8"Sonotube concrete forming tube cutter, etc. I have lived at a building site in the Uinta mountains for two winter's and ate breakfast,lunch and dinner on my tailgate and I don't miss carrying the nice tactical folders... The ESEE4 performs like a big knife, the slim handles and sheath keep a low profile and absolutely rugged durability of old school 1095 make me feel ready to take on any problem.

I live in Utah it's very dry here.i don't oil it. The Esee is coated but I reprofiled.the edge and polished it on a home made constant angle sharpener and touch it up with a Spyderco sharpener and leather strop. If I lived where it was humid I would probably wipe it with Crisco shortening , it's food grade and won't run off or dry

I was recently sold on the whole “edc fixed blade” thing. I just ordered a White River M1 Backpacker to everyday. I personally only neck carry fixed blades because I live in the butt crack of Texas and rarely wear belted pants, I’m also a college student and although knives are allowed I like to be inconspicuous. Love the channel guys thanks for the video!

Izula 2 and the Candiru are my favorite edc. I've been EDC'ing a Izula and Ranger 78 SAK for about 9 months. The longest I've EDC d anything so it's a keeper setup. I ve been carrying fixed blades for 2 years and dont see myself going back. 1. Quicker and easier to deploy...1 handed 2. More durable... no lock to break... 3. Free up pocket space 4. Not dragging your hand across your knife to get to other things... 5. They just look nicer and I have way more confidence in fixed blades than I do with folders.

Kydex? It has that problem sometimes. Especially if it can rattle around in it.
@krazykat64
@krazykat64 4 жыл бұрын
Chaz Miller It didn’t rattle around, it was just the stupid way it was designed. One of the retention screws is really close to the opening and unless you’re slowly deliberate and careful about how you draw the knife the sharpened edge is almost guaranteed to drag across said screw on its way out of the sheath, thus dulling it. I could literally hear it scrape every time I took it in or out. I did a search when I first noticed the issue and it turned out I was far from the only one who had that problem.
@andrewmabry8995
@andrewmabry8995 4 жыл бұрын
Same here. It's going back to the store. It's the pins that run through the retention clips are metal and the blade slides across them on the way out and in. Got a CRKT SIWI on the way.

One of the knives in my EDC rotation is a buck 103 (I have both the wood and phenolic ones). The handle is super comfortable, and while the steel is nothing special the geometry is good. One thing I can't emphasize enough about fixed blades is that once you find one you like, don't settle for the factory sheath unless you love it! I have three custom sheaths for my bucks, two kydex models for EDC and a leather one with a dangler and firesteel loop for camping. Some people might think I'm crazy for spending $100 on a sheath for a $70 knife, but I look at how much I like the knife more than how much it costs when I choose to invest in it.

If you like the 103 that much you might wanna get the upgraded version with better steel and a better handle. 103 pro I think

I daily a Fallkniven f1pro. The dangler that it comes with hangs from my belt with the sheath inside my back pocket. It's a perfect all around small knife, but it looks huge to a lot of non-knife people. Keeping all but the handle tucked away in my pocket keeps me from getting "those" looks. I've used it for everything from cutting cordage, opening boxes, pulling nails, opening bottles, even made a few sandwiches. It's my little buddy

Slipping the sheath into your pocket, some sheaths are meant for this, and can even include a clip on them as well
@SeemsLogical
@SeemsLogical 4 жыл бұрын
A slip is essentially a leather pouch that has a pocket clip on it. It's different from a sheath in that it covers up the entire knife whereas the sheath has an exposed handle. You'll usually find it with slip joints but some fixed blades use them. The Civivi rustic gent is a good example of what a slip looks like.

I’ve been carrying a Cold Steel Secret Edge for six years. Recently I added the KaBar BK23 and the Dozier skeletonized fix blades for a change up. Sheath on all three has much to be desired, but quite versatile and useful blades. Especially for someone who suffers from peripheral neuropathy and hand issues, but still loves working with hands. And all three are not too scary for people at my job.

I am not a folder guy and have always carried fixed blades but I absolutely love the boker as a substitute for a folder (when I can’t carry a 5” blade). I carry it scout (front) and I dont think there’s a day when I don’t use it and it’s never let me down. I reccomend anyone shopping for a fixed blade edc look into it...

Don't know how many shared my experience, of once I started a daily carry of 1... got near obsessed w/ keeping it sharp ! Yea, I was cutting things I should not have... just to see what it would do... so ... more time got spent maintaining... Evolved into finding & wearing a neck knife... "just in case" primary was not 1st rate sharp when needed... lol. Good show guys !

As a truck driver (over the road) I've been out just over nine months so far, and out of the many-many...many blades that I've been collecting my entire life, I've been carrying the Battle Horse Knives "Dutchman Survival Knife" almost every day...but not in some states (like New York for example... or Maryland...and a few others), I wear baggy clothes (always), so I don't worry about printing. Although I am a Bark River and Cold Steel super fan, this really great knife found its way into my rotation, and since I haven't been home to switch it out, that's the blade that I've been rocking, and I have no complaints...it is a super-SUPER knife...I have it in 3V steel. This is a super tough knife...SUPER TOUGH.
