This is 3 years old. I am a cheap individual and so I made my own copy of this product with 4 ingredients, namely Dental cotton rolls, Wax, oil, heat. I consider heat to be an ingredient because it requires fine heat control to get the wax and oil mix to proper temperatures and stay in said range. I am satisfied with my product as, on paper they match that product.

Made up a firestarter kit in an Altoids tin with about a dozen of these, a ferro rod and a striker (that I made by cutting a strip off the blade of a free plaster knife from Menards). I took this on a kayak camping trip with my son on the Au Sable river in Michigan this past weekend with my son. I also brought about 12 fatwood sticks to supplement tinder, since we were camping on reservable boat-in sites and I figured all tinder will have been scavenged by this time of the year (mostly correct). I used the plugs for every fire and they were perfect. One plug and two feathered fatwood sticks started most every fire on the first try. I was only able to get oak as our fire wood, so I batoned a couple of pieces down to smallish size with my Morakniv, which helped immensely. I really like the fire plugs and will always have a tin of them in my pack on every trip.

GREAT coffee press. BTW FYI wood gasification stoves are not mini bon fire stoves aka tiny box twigs stoves. Wood-gas stoves are there own specific type of stove. They burn the material twice... hence the term "gasification". When properly loaded (vertical sticks with thinner twigs towards center no TALLER than the TOP of flame concentrator ring) and then light from the TOP ...They will burn the wood AND the wood gas making them the MOST efficient stove EVER designed. When used properly there should only be a small bit of ash left over. A stove like yours that is properly loaded and lit from the TOP should take about 5 to 6 min to start gasafying (a smokeless fire)- then you should have an intense flame coming out of each of the internal top holes for 10-15 min - lastly you'll have your secondary charcoal burn (still plenty hot to boil water or cook a burger ) for another 20 - 30 min. Take your time to prep this stove & it should burn for 45-60+min WITHOUT RELOADING WOOD... thats why gasification stoves DON'T have an opening to reload for more wood, because most people are done cooking in 45min. Just like there are certain things you need to do for alcohol stove work efficiently to maximize there burn intensity and duration. I've personally found that 1 cup of wood pellets, a 1 cap full of HEET, and lit from the TOP gives me real good results. You'll be surprised how much better & longer your wood-gas stove works. Those Fire plugs seem to work well, the coffee looks good. One fire starter I use is Diamond Strike A Fire they ar great also . Thanks and take care.

I can see the convenience factor with these - really easy to handle. They go for about 20 cents each up here in Canada (150 for $30 on amazon.ca). I'm not even sure what I spend on cotton balls and vaseline (dollar store products) but they are my all-time diy favourites. They are the magic that made me feel like a bushcraft hero back in the day - GRIN.

Doc, I listen to you because you’ve always been straight and smart, no BS. I trust you. So, this is the best? I carry a Solo Campfire, a little bigger so it can serve as a campfire. I have a grill and a tripod for it. I almost always start with a Swiss stick bundle that comes to the top of the Solo. These little plugs would be great. I agree about the messy cotton balls with Vaseline. The Vaseline does serve multiple purposes though, fire, lube, waterproofing the blades and barrels, wounds…and if you use lard or Crisco then you can cook/spice with it too. Texas

I bought fire plugs after watching your video. I use to keep Tinderquik tabs in my mini survival kit but after a few tests they have been replaced by the fire plugs. Burn time is a lot longer, better flame. It is like having a mini candles in your kit. I am able to carry 10. Break them in half and you get 20 with a decent burn time. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

I know you are a huge fan of little wood stoves. Are you going to get one of the new bushbuddy minis to review in the future? I just found out the mini is now out for sale and it seems there are no reviews of it anywhere. The mini is a wood gas stove the same capacity as the regular bushbuddy / solo stove, however coming in at 4.2-4.5 ozs it is in the weight range of the firebox nano ti.

I like using stove fuel tabs for starting fires. The Esbit fuel tabs are my favorite. Even Show Goo makes a fire good starter.

Quick question. Recommendation for a sleeping bag liner? I'm going to try snow camping in Western North Carolina. Since camping in the south usually isn't cold, I only have a 40 degree bag.

Looks like a beefier version of a Tinderquick. Seems to have good burn time.

Best fire starter is a lighter and Zippos is a great choice:)

Washer/drier lint, polyester not cotton, rolled tightly in white canning wax or candle wax.

I do not like this style of firestarter. They have too much cotton and not enough wax. You can make your own which are much better. Make a pea-sized ball of cotton and fluff it up much larger, then twist a small wick which is tightly twisted. Hold the wick and dip the fluffed up cotton Into melted wax. Shape them slowly into a pyramid as they dry, with the wick on top, like a Hershey's kiss, and then dip the wick. They last forever in a pack and burn for about 7 minutes with large flames. They light just like a candle and can even work as solid fuel for cooking in a pinch. And they cost like one penny each. All the benefits of these firestarter and more, except it takes more work to fluff one up enough to use with a fire steel.

I am very sorry to say that those are not the best fire starters. There are many many great fire starters out there for way more less costs. You can make your own easily better than those. Everyone has something at home can be DIY to make your own fire starters. It's amazing how these crooked dealer got away with selling those for high dollars. I wished people would stop buying those and making the dealers rich, people should try to be smarter and DIY fire starter, stop wasting your money on something that is easy to make at home.
