Had a film class in Uni, John basically summed up a 2 hour lecture in 10 minutes: -Horror is special because of how it openly defies social norms, challenges preconceptions, and destroys our sense of being safe in society -Horror provides us catharsis, giving us a way to safely see on-screen the things we repress or are afraid of, as well as seeing someone else do that struggle rather than us have to face it ourselves.

I think a good entry into the horror video game genre is pixel rpg horror. Mad Father, The Crooked Man, Ib, Paranoiac, and The Witch's House are all great example on how great horror games can be achieved regardless of graphics and such. After that if you've really enjoyed it then go into Silent Hill, Fatal Frame. The Amnesia franchise is also really great to get into the genre and a lot of other indie horror games currently on steam. I would also would recommend Resident Evil but only the remakes of the first game and second game in the series. I really love horror games.

Horror is enjoyable because we as a species find a cathartic release from seeing people triumph in the face of adversity. Succeeding against impossible odds, beating the bad guy and surviving when it seemed impossible. It also allows us in a lot of ways to process our place in the universe and why we fear what we fear. What is scary about death? Is it the actual pain of dying? Is it the stress and terror that leads right up to the moment of death? Is it the idea that death may not be the end and we can still suffer even as spirits ? Is it the idea of eternal torment? Horror poses those questions and lets us come to our own conclusions.

I don't know if I agree with the first point. I think that applies to all sorts of genres not just horror, and also most of the horror stories I've seen - the protagonist doesn't overcome the adversity. Just to clarify, I'm not saying that there is no horror movie (or story in general) where somebody triumphs over adversity, I'm just saying that it might apply to some stories but not to the genre as a whole. And I haven't watched that many in the first place, so that's just based on my own experience.

Best way I could ever explain it, is that I enjoy the feeling of tension in the context of horror. It's the good kind of tension where you know you're not really in danger but still get a little of that "being on edge" feeling. It's like a rollercoaster where you know everything is under control, but the adrenaline still kicks in.

Probably the same reason why people can enjoy spicy food. A controlled amount of tolerable and resolvable temporary pain can be enjoyable from time to time, especially if taken at proper doses. Especially since horror releases similar endorphins as eating a spicy dish, and a tolerance can build. So the rush of good horror mixed with a release of endorphins and relief of unresolved normal anxieties (or with capsaicin, your back pain feeling relieved with the application of a pepper lotion) can be an enjoyable experience.

Funny because i read about this recently. If I remember correctly, the genre evokes hormones that puts you into the fight or flight state. Additionally, dopamines are also released, causing you to feel rewarded.

Ehhh... I won't say Manhunt isn't horror, but it's slasher and you're the slasher villain. If you're going that old for proper horror then I say go for Silent Hill 2, either the PC one heavily modded or the Xbox/PS2 versions emulated. Newer than that though... I haven't explored enough but frankly there's more in the indie space rn than there is from AAA. I guess horror isn't as marketable as it once was.

As a hardcore horror fan (both games and movies) it's has become extremely rare that a movie or game disturbed me to such a point that I wouldn't want to watch it again. But there are two movies - Cannibal Holocaust and Mother! For introverts Mother! is actually extremely terryfying because your husband keeps allowing complete strangers to stay in your house and DOESN'T LEAVE while they keep growing rude and presumptous breaking your house and your soul apart until they turn your home and your husband into a cult. (spoilers - they also tear your newborn apart and EAT HIM!!!)

I loved horror movies only when watching with friends since it was fun to see them scared and it's so much better being scared together than alone but I never could really say that horror movies were good, I enjoyed them in someways but they’re just alright. And that's how I viewed horror for a long time, until I found The Magnus Archives. This is when I realised I much prefer consuming horror in every form but movies (well more like I haven’t found any horror movie all that good). I love horror podcast stories, left right game was absolutely fascinating and weirdly enough if it was turned into a movie I don’t know if I’d like it as much.

Actual step 1: experience some sort of trauma as a child, or at least comprehend it at some level apperantly. Step 2: fall asleep at some point and allow your subconscious to be like "hey lets protect ourselves from a potential threat by viewing potentially horrifying concepts, because reasons." Step 3: watch a horror. Step 4: profit. I wish i were joking, i think that's legitimately how it manifests. Lol

Personally I hate horror where it’s just miserable 24/7. Terrifier is one of those horror moves I can’t into because it’s just miserable for the main protagonist hell even Rob Zombie’s Devil’s Rejects because he tries so hard to make them badass and cool when they’re really just horrible people being horrible people and somehow you want me to root for them? Hell nah I rather see them get gunned down and massacred instead. But when it comes to horror like Zombie’s Halloween movies because at least I know the main character has a fighting chance I enjoy that a lot more. Just give me main characters in horror genre a fighting chance then maybe I’ll enjoy it.
