Look at me riding forward into a fence!! It's time for another jumping lesson with William, fresh from getting back from Ireland. Both Jammy and Winnie were pinging, and I think it might be to do with me being a lot more confident. Hope you enjoy!

I think people forget how hard riding a young horse is... it's not pretty and you constantly have to think 5 steps ahead, but you make it look effortless! Meg, you ride both horses so so well. It's wonderful seeing you be so positive about yourself, please do this more often! You are a lovely rider, getting the best out of both mares, it truly is lovely to see. Can't wait to see Winnie in a few years time out at badders!

Hi Meg, nice riding! Just a quick observation: If Winnie and Jam tend to have some separation anxiety, try not to rest them next to each other. Instead, work them when they're near each other and then rest them separately. This associates the other girl with work and they'll be more happy to live separate lives :) It's the "choose where you work, choose where you rest" principle from Warwick Schiller (and I'm sure many others).

You should be thrilled with your riding and your girls! Incredible, forward riding! I think you've got the feel for it now. Very impressive! Jam was her typical legendary self and Whinnie seems to love her work and she's got loads of potential. I'm sure it's daunting to sit on her when she's sassy, but she does seem bold and happy in her work, 2 qualities for a very promising event horse.

Meg - I have a horse that had the same problem as Winnie with the saddle slipping, and going up the next, after so many saddles and saddle pads the only thing that work was a gel half pad, you put it on first then the saddle and it works like a bomb, your saddle will not move and it doesn’t irate them!!! I would highly recommend it!!!!!!!!!

You rode brilliantly, Meg. You didn't pull Jam, there were a couple of brief 'checks' which looked perfectly reasonable to me. As everyone is saying, you rode forward with confidence. Winnie is looking awesome, with such great potential. A crupper may possibly help with the saddle until she builds up muscle?? You coped so well with her sass - but she learns quickly & I think she shows intelligence & is really keen to learn. The awkward 'bunny hops' soon changed - she was flying❤

I've been following you for just a short time (compared to many people I assume) on youtube, but I have to say that you can really see the difference in your riding from earlier videos to this one. The willingness you have to work on yourself and your riding to improve and do better is inspiring. I'm just sad that I can't do it for myself because I don't have the money to ride at a riding school. I rode for 11 years on two different riding schools. Back then my parents were kind enough to pay for that. I'm an adult now and I can't ask them to do that again. I just have to wait and hope that one day I will. Keep up the good work Meg!

"I got better once I started riding forward." Quote of the century Megs. Believe your own hype will you. Because everyone has been saying it for an ages. And as for changing things up and experiencing new, different and more, it is how we learn. You really can ride. Stop with perfectionism it's a killer and go for fun, energy and forward. Winnie is such a stunner and I love her expression. She's bright and ready to go. But it's driving as much as riding with her currently. The more you ask of her the better. Attitude comes from babying them. Lead them and it will alter.

Yay! So happy to see you riding Jam forward! Woohoo! I actually relate to you a LOT; my first instinct is usually to pull to a very close distance and/or add a stride down a line. It’s just this mental roadblock. I know rationally that pulling too much is going to leave me with NO distance, which isn’t safe, but that’s my go-to when I get nervous… I slow down! Especially if I’ve been out of practice for a while. I was actually getting to a point over this summer when I was really riding forward, and even asking for longer distances than I would usually ask for. That was on the 5 year old Irish WB I’ve leasing, who is much braver than my 13 year old Dutch WB. Who decided to dump me over a jump in June (I swear he has multiple personalities. One day he will go around quiet and perfect, the next day he is running at the jumps and spooking at everything!) and broke a few of my ribs, so now I’m back to working on not being nervous and making myself ride forward again…. Only now I ride in an air vest bc being 47 years old means it takes me longer to heal! I also 100% agree with we riders being too self-critical. I am VERY guilty of that! I will do an exercise and my instructor will say that I rode it well, but I always have a list of things I tell her I could have done better. 😳 She gets mad at me for that, and I’m trying to stop being such a perfectionist. I’m just VERY competitive; even with myself! 😂 It’s hard for me to not criticize myself, as I only started riding again regularly last February after a 6 year hiatus (a serious illness in the family), and I know what I am capable of doing riding-wise, and it frustrates me when my body doesn’t respond to what my brain is telling it to do. But as my trainer reminds me, NO ONE can take off 6 years of riding, then take off 2 months to heal my broken ribs, and instantly ride as perfectly as they used to ride. Especially since I’m in my late 40’s now. So I’m TRYING to be patient with myself and to be more positive toward my riding. It’s SO hard! 😂 But you did look amazing on Jam and Winnie. I thought for sure Winnie was going to buck you off at the beginning there. I’m glad you stayed on! She sure is wiggly isn’t she? The horse I’m leasing who I think just turned 6 has only been able to stay in a straight line over two related fences for the last 6 months or so, so I feel your pain! Lots of placing poles for us and me having to use my legs a lot to straighten him out, but it’s come together nicely (now that my lease on him is almost over 😢).

Lovely forward riding on Jam 👏. And a spicy 🌶️ Winnie! Really interesting to see you work through it - I have a sensible grey and a spicy bay that’s similar - it’s hard for me not to freeze but to ride through it and focus on the work but it always helps.

Your riding looks so much more confident. Very different to the days of frequent circles because you didn't feel confident with the approach to a fence.
