In today's video I will be showing you what I think is the best combination ladder on the market.
You can buy me a coffee here www.buymeacoffee.com/charlied... or become a monthly member to unlock Discord forum membership, exclusive content and automatic entry into my FREE Monthly Giveaway. Thank you SO SO much!!
You can now access my 🛠Charlie DIYte Amazon Tool Store here www.amazon.co.uk/shop/charlie... - where you'll find all my tried, tested and much loved DIY tools arranged into handy categories.
I do a lot of work at large properties where I'm working at 3 - 5 metres off the ground, and for this sort of work you want a ladder that gives you complete peace of mind and safety working at these heights. Also, typically I need a ladder that doesn't need to be lent against the wall - either because I don't want to damage the paintwork/ wall paper, or because sometimes (eg conservatory blinds) there is nothing to lean the ladder against!
So that's why the Youngman Combi 100 is so fantastic, because you can use it as a typical 3 tier ladder against the wall, or you can use it as an extended step ladder - with a safe working height of well over 4 metres.
I bought the ladder from Wickes in the UK but it looks like they no longer stock it. So you will need to look at other retailers geni.us/Llbg2T8 (Amazon) *

My neighbour is a sky engineer and kindly lent me his ladder after seeing me struggling with my double extender ladders... The difference was unbelievable... It was such a pleasure using them and they were so stable I could of stayed up there all day... I was working at the highest point of my house which is about 8-9 meters at the apex on the side of the house... They had a stabilisor at the bottom and wide wheeled section at the top to run it up the wall. I'm getting an erection just thinking about the erection... It was DIY heaven... hehe...

Hi Charlie am a window cleaner of forty years and still going up ladders and fo the life of me can’t understand why ladder manufacturers still put the rungs at that awful angle so you are standing on the point of the rungs.all they need do is rotate them slightly and then they would be much more comfy on the feet.just my two pennies worth Charlie.tim in notts

Very informative video once again, Charlie. I’ve been contemplating buying a ladder for some time but they were either too long/heavy or too short/light. I need it for pruning climbing plants as well as maintenance over a canopy at the front of my home. Nothing I’d seen previously looked like it would do all of this until I spotted your review. I’ve checked its price here and as someone else mentioned in the comments below, it’s around €220. Thanks again for posting the review...I’ve gotten some fabulous insights and gems of wisdom from your experience for which I’m eternally grateful. By the way, nice haircut... 😉👍🏼

Update: finally, after a year’s worth of sagas I managed to finally get mine yesterday. It’s the Werner version but does everything this one does. I believe Werner bought out Youngman not too long ago. Anyway, for what it’s worth to anyone in Ireland contemplating buying this ladder, I managed to acquire it via Homebase in the end. I was severely messed around by so-called “trades stores” who repeatedly ordered the wrong ladder and whined about refunding me. PayPal are great, by the way, for this type of purchase. Ultimately, I discovered that the EU regulations had changed on these types of ladders so be careful when buying one in a bargain deal - check it is up to code, especially if in the trade. Raising the bar regulations-wise means it has become much more expensive here. Originally, a year or so ago, it was on sale for €220; it now costs around €400 for this model. Charlie, I’m very grateful to you again for posting this video and sharing your knowledge and experience abroad. I’ve finally got mine, and if I was any happier I’d be twins! 🤣 👍🏼

Great video! Personally I avoid sticking my leg through ladders. My reason being that no matter how study it feels, there is always a slight chance of falling and if you have your legs wrapped around the rungs your chances of avoiding injury are slim. But maybe that's just coz I'm being too sketchy in the first place. Sure lots of h&s bozos will jump down your throught for that one eh!

Hey Charlie, based upon your recommendations I have just taken delivery of my Youngman Combi 100. I opted for the larger version as I need to get up to a gable end that is about 7m up. The instructions say that the safe working height is 7.47m, so I should have some height to spare. Having said this, I will use extra stabilisers on the legs and maybe put an eye bolt on the wall to make sure. Thanks for your reviews, they really do help.

@@garvielloken3929 It's extraordinary isn't it. You feel rock solid up there. I'll tell you the story behind it. I was driving down to Chettle House in Dorset - Google it, it's quite a pad! We were doing all the curtains there for the new owner. The ladder I had was totally inadequate for the 4+m drops we were working at. I stopped at Travis Perkins and went up one of their longest standard A frame ladders. It was terrifying up at the top. So I then stopped at Wickes further along my way and luckily they had that Youngman ladder (I was lucky as Wickes isn't the shop it used to be and I don't think they stock them now). I bought it immediately and thank god I did as it was and has ever since been a game changer. It does sway a little now, as the legs need a mod to stop them moving in the feet, but you still feel absolutely safe right at the top. For a free standing ladder to feel that sturdy is extraordinary.

Thanks, I really appreciate that Joginder. I think you could do a lot worse than this ladder, although it is a bit of a beast to lug around, so depending on the height you need to get to, maybe look at one with a couple less treads, or take a look at Abru ladders - because they do an A frame ladder like this, but much smaller.

Charlie I agree they look like a pretty sturdy ladder, as you know a lot of Ladder accidents happen through sideway slipping by over reaching, that could happen even with those Ladders you are higher on them, so a pair of sideway support arms would be a good addition, what do you think Charlie. (I know your not support to over reach sideways, but who hasn't; at some time or other).

It does look interesting but you standing on the first small ladder on the top rung had me wondering. standing near the top at 5:58 did not build confidence without a ground spotter. Had this ladder had two wide stabilizers on both footings I would have felt better. I had some sure foots on my roof today, they could walk up anything and be safe in my book. This unit is very close to being right but missing a leg and not enough spread for the average consumer/person tilt wise. The real pro; ladder wise; does not need any of this. Although the real ladder pro would buy it and use it when needed. Tweaks and a ladder I would purchase. Two stabilizers rather then one and an option to have much wider stabilizers; not the one as shown. Security for the faint of heart and more sales. Options for a ladder. Options for the ladder.

Hi Jamie, this is a bit frustrating because the link in the Description below the video is, I think right amzn.to/2PfaUDl . In that mine is a Combi 100 2.5m ladder. What's confusing is that the image is of a 6 rung ladder whereas mine is an 8 rung ladder, so I'm guessing they've just been lazy and used the same image for all their ladder sizes. And if you scroll down they say it's got 24 rungs, so this has got to be right! Thanks for watching the vids, by the way 👍

Hi Daniel. I'd need to see a photo of the window in question. Email me if you want - details in the Description tab below the video.

Want a ladder?,then get a renovator transforma ladder it's a 24 in 1 with anti skid features, it's also works on staircases, forscaffolding, 6 different extension hights to reach a two story window's,a aframe step ladder to the size you want,it a also works on a 90 deree angle so you can get right up against the wall, you get 2 work platforms, and can be stored in your shed at 1.4 metres.you can extra stuff for free like renovator paint pro, and. renovator better grips.

£124 in July 2018, £220 in Dec 2019. Better return than a high yield savings account :) - great video (as with all of your videos)

I know, it's frustrating that. I'm guessing Wickes had some sort of promotion on when I bought it at this price. Thanks for the comment, Rob - much appreciated!

With respect, Pressure washing a building from an extended A format is the incorrect use of equipment, ladders shouldn't be used with holding onto it and preforming a task, you should use use scaffolding or temporary tower scaffolding

The stepladder mode doesn't look safe when near the top. You won't have to lean far left or right for it to topple over.

I know what you mean but the feet at the bottom stabilise it very well.

Have you looked at Little Giant leaders? Their Xtreme blows this away in every respect. Though I bet yours is cheaper.

That leg-lock might be OK if your ladder is VERY stable, but if it goes down, you won’t be able to jump off easily, or maybe at all. Also, if you get a leg cramp, you could be in serious trouble.

Agreed. I've never used the leg lock to be honest.

@@CharlieDIYte well after searching and researching on the internet unless I'm mistaken they're not available in the US yet because they haven't been tested and approved by OSHA and OSHA being a government entity it'll probably be 10 years before the same people that decided it's okay to free climb a cell tower get around to deciding this ladder is safe enough LOL

Best ladder advice I was given is that if the ladder is going to fall (when you are not on it and there is no-one else around!) then don't try to stop it - get out of the way and let it fall. Because the damage it does to whatever it lands on will be trivial compared to the damage it will do if it lands on you!

I would take a little giant ladder over that. The ladder was visibly rocking a bit in the extended step ladder position. And you were just standing on it. Now imagine pulling or tugging on something you were working on something. No thanks. That rocking can make you lose your balance. Why is it rocking versus a little giant, because it only has a wide stance on one side of the ladder unlike the little giant where all 4 legs are wide and made of aircraft aluminum making it far more rigid and stronger. Plus optional leg level standoff and platform to stand on.

Oh goodness me, ladder not fixed or tied to guttering at top ( can see on video how it moves!). No feature for using on sloping ground at bottom, it is bound to move when using above head height. Locking your leg through rungs means you will fall down with the ladder on top of you, yes you will break an arm or leg which is probably survivable, but when you hit your head on the ground, suffering a fractured skull - is a different story. When climbing a ladder above your head height you should always wear a tightened safety helmet or even a bicycle helmet ! Do you know how many fractured skull occur each year from falling off ladders be you a DIY or 'professional' ??

Tie it to the plastic guttering? Yes, great idea! Plastic guttering will hold the weight of a falling ladder with full-grown man! Where's your videos, dickhead?
