What is the right leash for walking and training your dog? In this video I address 4 leashes: The Flexi Leash, the Long Line, the pull tab and the standard dog walking leash.
You can skip to any section of the video by using these links below:
0:23 - The Flexi Leash
01:31 - Long Line
05:01- Leash
06:52 - Pull Tab
Knowing the right tools to use will help your dog training immensely. In this lesson I want to touch on the leash. Whether it's the flexi leash, the long line, a pull tab or a regular leash, they all have a place in training. I'll touch on the basics of each on here .

My neighbors have watched me over the years bring out my long lines, and leashes to put in the car. After a few years, my neighbor asked, " how did you teach your dogs to rock climb?" Rock climb? So long lines make me look like a Rock Climber? All they use are flexible leashes with reactive dogs.

I get variants of that too, sometimes, when people see us walking with the long line and I have it all rolled up, especially since it's bright orange. (Add some gaiters and trail runners to see what they say. 🙂) We also get funny remarks when it's cold and she has on her (green) t-shirt under her (orange) pack. The best this winter was "Look, a Dolphins fan!" (It took me a minute to register: "Miami Dolphins") 😀 But it's OK, and I always hope maybe some of the people we meet will try packing with their dogs, too.

I know Ivan Balabanov has said he loves Flexi leashes. He said he could talk for hours about their usefulness.I've found the best use for them (in my opinion) is if you don't have a fenced in yard and you need to take your dog to do their business, you can stand near your house (or even inside with a sliding door open a bit) and let your dog out to do his thing on the Flexi.

Quick tip, especially for smaller dogs. When choosing a long leash get a light material. Not a thick material or rubber.

Former SAR trailing K9 handler here, my trailing line is 25 feet, 5/8” harness leather (I’m a saddlemaker & leather does well in the desert) and the interesting thing is probably 90% of the time is I’m 6 feet away from my dog with my line dragging behind me. The further away from my dog felt like a lack of communication but occasionally with different terrain and situations I need to let that line slip through and allow my dog to handle a situation that I can’t.

Hi Robert, Great video as always , Yes TRAINING IS FUN. Still loving it after 50 years. I am sorry for not being around. I am very ill and ZED is doing amazing Service Dog Work and Supporting me. She is stopping me from collapsing backwards when i am sitting on the floor by sitting side ways on and leaning against my back. Sadly she can't be on every side. People NEED to understand that how they LIVE WITH and TRAIN there dogs makes for a fantastic dog who will do anything to help. Am waiting to see a Specialist. Thank you so much . Great video.

exceptional video! I've been using a 6 foot leash for casual morning walks and as you say, he's at the end. I feel like a 4 foot would force him to be in front of me and not paying attention less since his body length would cross my body as he goes from side to side if he's just moving forward. I've been thinking about that for a while now but everyone seems to say to use 6 foot leashes. I'm finding my dog wants to just check out with that level of loosness but keeping him just a little closer would help.

Love your videos 👍😃. I have a 3 year old female husky/ Shepard mix. Fun dog . Never socialized before we got her 6 months ago. No problem around people but other dogs on our walks , that’s a different story. Gets along fine with my other two dogs at home . Always wants to be in front of me on walks but doesn’t pull. She will stop and come back to my side when I stop. How do I get her to stay on my side without using a tight leash? I’ve tried treats but she doesn’t stay interested. Always want to be the leader.😂

I think ‘Flexi-leashes’ are terrible! Had a friend get her hip broken using one;(!!The dog wrapped the leash around her ankles; then took off running & knocked her down on the hard cement!!👀 I will use long line( usually on my young dogs) & 4-6 foot leather lead for obedience & walking around town. Just my ‘humble opinion’:)! I really enjoy your videos!✌️

I agree they're a hazard. I was standing next to someone holding a beagle on a flexi leash and the dog went around the back of me and then took off, the line was around the back of my knees and the dog ran some 50ft with that thin rope burning deep into my skin before the dog stopped. I still have the scars. It went so fast that despite it having gone nearly a quarter inch into my flesh, I did not bleed because the heat of the rope burn melted the wound shut, it had eventually blistered up like a burn. Hurt to walk for weeks. I don't get anywhere near a dog with those leashes now

I've had my hand sliced open by a flexi lead and it lead to a dog fight... I've also seen dogs nearly hanged by them, especially small dogs, or other serious injury. They keep constant tension too, not allowing a slack and relaxed lead.
@19LG99
@19LG99 9 ай бұрын
Any higher quality flexi leads will have a built in brake, allowing you to hold the reel or create slack when needed without touching the line itself. There are also different spring strenghts for different dog sizes. However the thin line can be hard to see so its important to keep your dog close when encountering cyclists etc.

My brother uses just a regular leash for taking him places. He is usually off leash for training. His dog carries it in his mouth when he forgets to take it off before he gets out of the car. He is a smart dog but stubborn at times. They live in the country so he is only on a leash when taking him places. He does wear an e-collar and obeys commands, at least when my brother is giving them, and somewhat for me and his wife. My brother says we are his toys because we are not firm enough with him.

My dog and I hike a lot and I use hiking poles, so she needs to walk in front of me and has been trained like a skijoring dog for this. I wear a specially-designed skijoring belt with a 4-foot leash with built-in bungee portion (very firm "bungee" inside the leash material) and "handle portions" I can use to hold it to keep her closer if needed (wildlife, horses, bikes, group users, other dogs, etc.). We use a 6-foot leash on regular walks (I'm used to picking up the slack; it works the arms ;) ) and to work on directions out front for hikes, and a long line to work on other training at a distance and if I want to give her some more room in a field, for example, to play. She does have fair recall but she also has a very strong prey drive so better safe than sorry and I'm not sure she'll ever be perfect as I got her when she was an adult so I'm being realistic about her ever being reliable in every situation (but we keep training anyway). My only issue with the longer leashes is they frazzle after a while (dragging even though I'm pulling in the slack), even the good mountaineering material. My girl tends to stay near me most of the time and rarely stays very far out on any leash except when hiking when she has to keep it extended but not actually pull on it, so she's about 3-4 feet in front at any time while we are actually hiking.

Sounds like you found a good way. Every dog is different, but im all for flexi leads if you know how to manage it properly after a while. It's not just the dog that needs to learn how to use it properly, but also the trainer/owner
@michellewarmath7811
@michellewarmath7811 7 ай бұрын
Thanks, @@flipnshifty , yes this works for us. I agree that a flexi leash like any equipment takes learning and practice and in knowledgeable hands can be very useful. One downside I find is that it does have more moving parts that can break and thus needs consistent checking before use (like collars, leashes and harnesses need regular checking) and I'm not really convinced it's the best option for more excitable, strong dogs but if it works for both dog and owner, why not. It's the user that makes the tool successful in the end. Take care :)

Hi Robert my Malinois is coming 1year old and I've noticed she's very driven towards having a pal when she sees other dogs she gets very playful and wants to mess when in the house she has a rubber pig and basically talks to it and makes it respond by squeezing it. I'm assuming it's a pack animal thing maybe I'm wrong but the dog Def wants a pal what would you suggest precautions to take when introducing a new pup I've my eyes on a German/Belgian cross 9 weeks old. I've had her from the same age and her training and obedience couldn't be better shes responds to multiple language commands she's great at detection super friendly with all people and animals, an all round super intelligent animal that responds rather fast to learning new information.. what would be the best age to get her spayed also

Great video. I use a 30 ft long line with my GS. She rarely is on the end unless running circles around me to burn off steam at a baseball field in the park we frequent. When regularly walking, we heel, use 5 ft loosely, or maybe 7 ft when walking in residential streets. I just continue to loop/unloop my longline as using it. I enjoy the freedom and she has learned to feel leash pressure and adjust her pace when she is nearing end of any given length. My line was purchased from a saddlery manufacturer-- made for dogs. It has a very secure snap closure and a bolted swivel 1&1/2 feet off the snap so lead stays relatively uncoiled. Thank you, Robert for your generous sharing of you dog training expertise! I have learned so much from your videos. My reactive 4 yr old female working line beauty has come a long way!❤ Confidence so much better, making choices to listen,leave it and watch me as we pass dogs on walks now a streets width distance ( 95%) of the time. A superb improvement from age 2&1/2 when I adopted her. Thought she'd try to kill ever😂ry dog she saw!! Best wishes to you and yours! 6:33 6:33

Because flexi leashes are very thin, they can easily be overlooked by cyclists, leading to dangerous situations. Its important to be aware of your surroundings and have your dog stay near you when encountering cyclists.

I think it should be common sense that if you have your dog on flexi lead you need to watch it more than if you have a 2m line.

One warning on flexi leash. DONT USE ONE IF YOU HAVE NEUROPATHY IN YOUR HANDS. DONT BUY ONE THAT IS TOO SMALL FOR YOUR HANDS! In 2013 I was walking my new Puggle Puppy. I accidentally dropped the flexi leash. It retracted and scared the hell out of the puppy! The pup took of running! Then I took off running after the pup! I had shorts on that were fine for walking,but NOT FOR RUNNING! They fell down to my knees and tripped me up! I fractured and dislocated my elbow! Had to wait two months for swelling to go down. Then had to have a $100,000 elbow replacement! Oh ,how I wish I had a simple leash that slides over your hand onto your wrist,that day!
