Go read Death Note(12 volumes, available as one big book with all 12 volumes too, The Promised Never Land (16), and look most series which have 10 or 20 and i say MOST are usually trash, that's why they have such a low volume not ALL but MOST of them. Don't be intimidated by size coz once you find a good series that you like you'll finish all the volumes in a matter of weeks 😉.

@erickramirez67724 жыл бұрын
I loved monster, but the last panel ruined it, tbh... Vagabond is awesome! ....until the storytelling takes a hit, forcing Kojiro into the story. ( I understand he needs to be in the story; I just thought the execution fell flat) I also thought it pandered too much every time a character gets a backstory because Musashi kills them. It's a good story, but the way it's told downgrades after the Baiken arc. But im glad you love it and hope to see an ending to the final arc.
@Gardi934 жыл бұрын

Franken Fran is able to keep everyone alive, improving physique or cognition, basically anything medical goes. Franken Fran is a nice lady, that fulfills the wishes of her patients, with the worst consequences. She doesnt do it with any sign of Ill intent, but the results are somtimes hard to watch. Lots of very morbid humour and the thought process about the gap between her nice, oblivious manners and her strong "ethics" versus the norm, sells it for me.

This was great manga list (thanks for the Black Jack and Sanctuary recommendations, im half way through Sanctuary and it is awesome, love that old school art style) Also, its so cool that Lone Wolf is getting love, I remember in the early 90s picking up the first one when i was 11 or 12 years old and I distinctly remember those panels you were describing of Itto telling Daigoro(his son) to choose between the ball or the sword (the road to hell) and when Ogami said that if he chooses the ball he was going to end him right there I knew right away that this was a different "comic" and I shouldnt be reading this lol (it is as you said, these were brought as comics I believe by a company called First Comics which had Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, Mike Ploog in their ranks). It is such a groundbreaking and influential manga....I mean this ran from '70 till 76, very ahead of its time and that ending?? I believe that in the dictionary for the word EPIC, it should say "see Lone Wolf and Cub ending" because holy shit. Wow....just Wow. Anyways im babbling too much. Great vid and take care.

I love that the Mandalorian references Lone Wolf in several scenes--I keep waiting for the "cart" the Child is in to sprout weapons. Lone Wolf is like a low tech Bond with all the gadgets. Love Ryoichi Ikegami's artwork (tell me Terry Moore wasn't inspired by Ikegami's hulking brutes when he designed Bambi and Tambi for Strangers in Paradise). Read most of Samurai Crusader and all of Mai the Psychic Girl, but only bits and pieces of his other series like Sanctuary, Wounded Man, Strain, and Crying Freeman (my brother owns the Spiderman manga he did). I actually got a letter published in one of the Oh My Goddess manga. God, that series lasted too freaking long (it didn't end until 2014, long after I stopped buying the comics) but the OAV series was awesome. I still have the soundtracks. I loved Riding Bean and the Gunsmith Cats anime, but I wasn't ready to read ecchi when I started reading the Dark Horse comics release, and even that edited version was beyond what I was willing to read at the time (fan service nudity was fine in 1996, but I drew the line at a masturbating Minnie May). By the time the unedited omnibus versions came out years later, it was the pacing I had issues with. I see Kimagure Orange Road. I didn't even know they released an English version. My favorites: Rumiko Takahashi's non-long-form series (Mermaid Saga, One Pound Gospel, and her short stories (both Rumic World and Theater)), as well as the longer Maison Ikkoku series. Cross Game, Touch, and Q & A, as well as the Short Program anthologies by Mitsuru Adachi. I don't care that much for baseball, but the slice of life aspects makes it worth skimming through. Honeymoon Salad (and to a lesser extent the side series Baby Leaf) by Hikaru Ninomiya. Fan translation. Excellent series with erotic elements, but that's not the real focus (case in point, the first sex scene (not counting an opening chapter dream) starts as someone is trying to kick in the front door of the woman's apartment). Sweet Blue Flowers by Takako Shimura. Also Happy Go Lucky Days, which just had a movie adaptation released. Another couple of series I read in fan translation, though Sweet Blues Flowers is supposed to get a Viz omnibus version that I'll have to get. Nausicaa. Nuff said. Mars by Furumi Soryo. Maaaaybe a little longer than it needs to be (it's as long as Maison Ikkoku at 15 volumes) and a little melodramatic for tastes, but I just love the artwork and it tackles the subject of sexual abuse better than most manga. Spirit of Wonder by Kenji Tsuruta. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. How has this series never been released in America. Erased. Not gonna lie, I don't like the art and the story's not perfect, but there's just something about it that sucks me in. D-ASH by Miya Mitazawa. Another untranslated title, this one about a runner who is in love with a childhood friend who can barely walk without a crutch. I don't think the main character is all that interesting, and he's not always sympathetic, but like Erased, the better elements outweigh the negatives.
@NearMintCondition3 жыл бұрын
Well brother, we just became instant best friends. I love your suggestions. I've not read Mars for some reason. And damnit you just reminded me to buy Erased. I've missed out on that too. Interested in Honeymoon salad as well.

Omar, the Lone Wolf And Cub Omnibus releases are taller than the single vols. The omnis are nice, in my opinion. I have 9 of the 12 omnis and the rest in single vols. Even if Dark Horse did release Deluxe editions, I spent a lot of time and effort collecting what I did, I would probably stick with what I have. The same goes for Blade of the Immortal. The Omnis are nice, so I will stick with them.

Since you made Monster an honorable mention, my guess is you have 20th Century Boy in the second part of your list, as you obviously avoid putting two titles by the same writer ! And if not, I say you should x) Seriously, 20th Century Boy is one of my favorite stories of all time.

What I liked was the aspect of Harry Potter meets Ninjas. Growing up with the characters. The love and betrayals you see happen. I've not read Boruto, but damn did I enjoy Naruto.

Which manga / artists employ the best use of shading, iyo? The black and white line art doesn't do much for me but I've seen some of the recent Berzerks and they're just gorgeously textured.

Gantz, Jean of Arc, Gundam Origin, Blade of the Immortal, Vagaband and Tokyo Ghoul are some off the top of my head.

As a major Clamp I've always wanted to read X. It's so brutal knowing that there were only 3 more volumes to go to finish it, and here we are something like 17 years later and it's still on hiatus.

I know.. I hope one day they actually finish the manga.

Among the titles you have displayed on the table in the intro, there's something titled, "Kimagure Orange Road" (which is my favorite series) - Is that something new? I never finished collecting the Japanese hardcovers (10 book set) -- Can you elaborate on what that item is?

@@NearMintCondition I'm in full support of your social media embargo these days, but upon your return to twitter you might seriously consider nagging David Brothers (their otaku/all around comicphile editor, who before that gig was always exceptionally approachable and a fantastic comic and comics culture critic) there about it. Sadly, all the omnibus of Lone Wolf and Cub by Dark Horse are not available. Still need to find some of them but they are going for crazy prices. If they were to do a big hardcover line like Berserk for this, I would double dip in a heartbeat !

I LOVE B&W films but I find B&W comics/manga difficult to get through. Weird. Probably because movies have the advantage of sound and movement. I tend to pick up vibrant comics.

Only things I read that were mentioned on here were Berserk, Akira, Lone Wolf and Cub, and in the runners up, Parasyte. I did see the Monster anime 11 years ago, though not sure how different that is from the manga.

To: NMC / Oh my stars! The Artwork on Vinland looks stunning! WoW! Due to your thorough review of said story, I went ahead and just bought issue One, as I’m listening to your Review. My very first Manga about 2-yrs back was “Monster” hand I recently bought all 8-Vol of “Pluto”, plus Master Keaton vol 1,2,3. I think I’m developing a habit for Manga, of various types. Based on your review, I’ve also bought Berserk HC Omnibus Vol 1, and 2. Thank you for your insightful well reasoned reviews and recommendations. I’m a complete fan of Naoki Urusawa! If he writes/draws a phone book, I’d buy it! JaJaJa..!!! / Any great Manga you’d care to recommend, I’m all ears! (Ps) Looove the dual screen, we get to hear and see you. Superb! Thank you for the time invested, and the research you do.
