The Panasonic Leica 10-25mm F/1.7 is the lens I've been most excited about for a long time. For Micro Four Thirds, it's big, but it's multi-talented, fast, and could do several jobs for me, both in photography and video. Check out what I make of it...
Also a huge thank you to Lumix for sponsoring this video. I've been using the G9 and the G85 for a long time now and the stabilisation in them is immense. Find out more here: www.panasonic.....

I think you forgot something very important. 1.7 on micro 4/3 is still 1.7 in terms of how much light goes into your camera, it only multiplies the depth of field. So if you are ditching a 1.4 lens, your are missing out on how much light you could possibly let in. Though, 1.7 is still more than enough light in the most shooting scenarios. Cheers from Switzerland :)

The DOF discussion is the most misunderstood concept. Micro 4/3 simply has a smaller sensor which forces you to use a shorter focal length or increase your distance to the subject. Both of those things increase DOF. Simple as that. The sensor itself isn't changing the DOF and the aperture remains the same. f1.7 is always f1.7.

markhou that being true theoretically, the gab now in 2019 is so tiny, because to it is much easier to cool MFT comparing to the FF so they can actually offer much better performance in more portable factor for much lower price than a FF, as for BMPCC4K. More I learn about it, as much as I hated it in the beginning, the trade of for that low light shooting is definitely in favour of MFT. Unless you are doing some heavy under water shooting or spying on people on the dark 😁 you will beat FF by MFT sensors in 95% of the tasks.

Yep, I've grown o really hate the term equivalence. Seems to bring out the worst in people on the gear head forms. F-stop is unambiguously defined by focal length and the actual size of the aperture. A 50 mm f/1.7 lens is a 50mm f/1.7 lens. Yes, the formats have different pluses and minuses. But almost all of the cameras available today are capable of making wonderful photographs. Even phone cameras these days can make terrific images. And they are all capable of making extremely mundane and boring photos (even if technically perfect).

I really like your reasoning for how this lens could replace up to four others. All you might want is a Panasonic or Voigtlander 42.5, and a long tele zoom and you're set for anything. For me, this could replace the Pana 12-35, Oly 12, Oly 17, Oly 25 and maybe even the Voigtlander 25.

@@jiraz It depends on your flavour of "indoors"... If you're a pro photographing the inside of a house for real estate, I think it's too tight. For events -- photographing people and groups indoors -- I think 10-25 is a great range.

You know James... The humor in your videos... :-P A Lumix Ambassador... And marriage! Life just keeps getting better and better! Congrats! Probably the last time I got excited about a lens was the Zeiss Otus... The 55 and 85. Those things are just so gorgeous. And their performance: second to none. Then comes along the 10-25mm f/1.7... The 8-18 with it's f/2.8-4 was 'okay'. I would still have to work it for event photography in dark locations and no flashes. But f/1.7 is a godsend. No flash. Lower ISO. Higher shutter speed... And the focal range is just about perfect for a general wide zoom. Even with my 12-60mm, I've gotten some pretty amazing, wide shots. The extra 2mm is just gravy. Downloaded stills from a production 10-25mm on a G9. SUPER sharp! The image rending is what you'd expect: damn beautiful. It's a damn big lens for m43. But it's a little sacrifice for the performance Keep up the great work and again, congrats on the wedding!

Interesting that James says he does not need as shallow a Depth of Field as is usual in Full Format. I have the same. In fact, I prefer Micro Four Thirds because of its larger Depth of Field. moo While the 50mm f1.7 would indeed have a larger front element, it requires more magnification to achieve its angle of view and therefore must collect more total light to achieve the same output therefore exposure would remain constant between the two lenses. F stops and even more so T stops were designed to standardise this. Also in response to the video DoF does not change based upon sensor size which is another common misconception 🙃
@alexauga
@alexauga 5 жыл бұрын
moo Exposure is the amount of light per unit area which reaches the sensor not total amount of light gathered, consider a light meter does not require a focal length or sensor size to determine correct exposure. Hi James, I would not say "full frame cameras and crop sensor cameras" because that is supporting the "negative marketing" against MFT and APS-C cameras by Canon and Sony. They are just different camera systems. There are many Full-Frame cameras cropping the sensor in 4K: Canon EOS R and RP full frame cameras have a 4K crop factor of 1.7x (even the expensive 5D had a 4K crop factor of 1.7x that Canon managed to lower it to 1.27x by software). Even the famous Sony a7 III full frame camera also crops the sensor by 1.2x when recording at 4K at 30fps. So a "cropped sensor camera", are all: MFT, APS-C, and Full Frame. :)

No, no, no!!! Don't do it, mate! 😲 Selling teeny-tiny mft primes, and replacing them with a hulking-great zoom, is a guaranteed route to gear-frustration 😣 In my 35+ years in photography, it's one thing I've learned... Because you're a pro, you bought those teeny-weeny primes *on purpose*. So keep the smallest, most favouritist of the bunch, and only then, could the Lumix-Leica not give you cause for annoyance. Simon 😁👍
@Biosynchro
@Biosynchro 5 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting perspective. You certainly have a point. But, I think James has three good reasons to change: 1. He mostly uses lenses within the focal range of the 10-25. 2. It out-performs some of the primes. 3. On some shoots he will never have to change lenses. I would probably get the 8-18 (despite its sliding aperture) and treat it as an f/4 lens; and I'd add a standard zoom or a tele zoom - maybe the 35-100? Then again, that's a big gap between 18 and 35.

@@Biosynchro Hi Karim 🤗 Nice points. 🤔 Now, at the end of the day, it's up to James... But I have the 8-18 *and* a handful of teeny-weeny primes, precisely because when I know which focal length I want, I can use a lens which looks like a toy - but isn't! And having come from Canon FF/APS-C with 'L' lenses, and before that Nikon FF film, I'll never be tricked into buying *only* massive "high IQ" lenses again, because 100% of clients don't care one iota. Cheers 😁👍

@TangerineTux
@TangerineTux 4 жыл бұрын
@@clemfandango9534 10mm is also 10mm regardless of sensor size, but this is not what equivalence is about. The difference is depth of field _and_ light received from the subject, because they are both determined in large part by the size of the entrance pupil, given that the entrance pupil is where light enters the lens. The diameter of the entrance pupil is given by the (true) focal length divided by the f-ratio (in fact, in “f/1.7”, which is the correct notation, “f” stands for the focal length), so if you multiply the focal length for equivalence of field of view, you need to also multiply the f-ratio by the same factor so that the calculated entrance pupil diameter stays correct, thus maintaining equivalence of depth of field and light captured (and hence photon shot noise relative to the signal). (If you shoot JPEG, you will also want to multiply the ISO setting by that factor squared to maintain equivalent lightness in the processed image.)

I have the Olympus 17mm 1.8 lens and it has the pull-back focus ring and it is my favorite feature of any lens I own. It's is so fun to use, and it's really nice to have the ability to set the focus at a certain distance and leave it there.

While it is heavy for M43. It's incredibly light compared to a similar focal length and aperture full frame lens and is about as heavy as a similar APS-C lens. The sister lens to this, the 25-50 f/1.7. Is the reason I bought into M43. I wanted a fast ~50-100mm zoom lens (ff equiv) because a similar lens on any other format weighed over a kilogram.

James, leaving your camera bag at a distance like you did on the beach might be the best way to lighten up your gear and get that new lens you wish for. You could probably easily buy it after your insurances give you a check for the stolen ones. Hope Emily will give in!

Congratulations on the wedding! The lens reminds me of the Olympus 12-40 f2.8, especially the manual focus ring. There will be folks who love it, and others who hate it. Hope that Panasonic will offer a place in the menu to switch the ring off. My problem is: my other wide angle lens, Pana 8-18 is mostly used on 8-9 mm. :/ And I absolutely love my Oly 25mm f1.2. So, this lens would add some extra weight. But I love the idea of having less lenses with me and switching them less often. Kind regards

I might be wrong but I think quite a few Oly lenses have one of those pull back rings? Lots of logic for replacing 4 lenses with one - bag weight, less dust and moisture ingress, less missed shots, and less chance of dropping a lens whilst trying to change lenses lol The flute music reminds me of the film Anchor Man :D

LOL! Pull back focus! I do like this lens mate. Yet Olympus has manual 'clutch' for many years, but it's a welcome addition in the Lumix mix (huh). Anyway, I am tempted by this lens too. Oh, congrats on wedding and good luck with planning. J

Saw the title and clicked in so fast, but then as the video was loading I realized this video is probably about the $2000 lens. Nailed it. Absolutely fantastic lens, but I'm happy enough with my Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster ($120) and Sigma Art 18-35 (got it for $555). Getting down to f1.2 is also nice. I do tire of the typical Sigma weight tho lol. It's too bad at the price this lens is, they didn't include any OIS.

This and the Olympus f/1.2 appear to end up as the gateway for owners to add full frame cameras to their kit. It's the weight of these lenses. Owners logic is probably: if I'm carrying this large and heavy mft lens, surely i can deal with ff kit

Congratulations on the wedding and awesome images. This lens made me very excited ... until I started reading that there is a quite significant problem with field curvature on the 10mm range. That's why your 8-18mm was sharper in the corners. It's quite a big issue for me because I would love this lens for Landscapes about 75% of the time and field curvature does not get fixed by stopping down to f 8 or f 11 (yes, I know about diffraction above f 5.6) and it also creates big issues for stitching panoramas because the out of focus corners will overlap and create distortion and out of focus issues with any software. I do hope they can fix the issue, I need to replace my Olympus 14-54mm f 2.8-3.5 at some point.
