Bluegrass much? You may want to after this! At the ripe "old age" of 24, it is safe to say that Aubrey King has complete Mastery of the Genre. I first had heard of Aubrey by chance on instragram. His smoldering Bluegrass guitar picking is clear, forceful and gorgeous sounding. Although his playing is deeply rooted in the tradition, he can also surprise with jazz licks. You will not only learn more about Aubrey, but you'll learn about how he does what he does.

You might be interested to know that classical guitarist Pepe Romero uses a sort of "economy picking" in descending scales. He'll slide his "i" (index) finger to the lower string to play two notes in a row with the same finger. Pepe says he uses the technique with "great pleasure and success." On the other hand, his equally virtuosic brother, Angel Romero, practices strict i-m (index-middle) alternation in both directions.

Didn´t know that Pepe Romero did that, but I surely say Juanjo Dominguez do that on guitar, check his moto perpetuo video, also the guy that plays the requinto in El Trio Los Panchos, who play boleros, he also does the same technique to do some little trills. Having studied some classical guitar over the years, I can tell you that this technique is never taught by classical guitar teachers, Juanjo played classical but was more like a "popular music" player that used to include extended technique like this "upward sweeps" and also tremolos on more than 1 string, (ocasionally 3 string). Bass players also do this a lot.

Wow! This interview was GREAT! You brought a point up about not practicing everyday, and how laying off effects you. I thought I was the only one obsessed about this. If I miss two days, of say a tune that requires extreme right hand, like LA GITANE, My right hand takes a little time to come back to what it was, five days even longer. This is something that gives me anxiety over, especially if I have to travel, don't have my main axe, my gypsy guitar. And when I'm in the midst of learning new lines, its even worse. Glad I found your channel. I don't get much time to watch, but when I do, I will be going through ALL this great stuff.

That's some good metronome game, too, timing himself so the metronome hits on the upbeats, where the mandolin traditionally hits in bluegrass.

I've been teaching this stuff 45 years and other players have taught it to maybe not as long as myself. Other players are teaching it now. Where has the interviewer been living? In a cave. It's like people losing their minds these days over Billy Strings he's just regurgitating Doc Watson licks. Clarence White added to what Doc had already done and Tony Rice changed everything and Tony is the watermark. Nobody like Tony, Mark O'connor came the closest he's an incredible flatpicker.

Do you wanna know where I’ve been living Ronnie? In the professional guitar playing and teaching world. If you can only hear regurgitated Doc Watson, licks in Billy strings playing then you need to work on your ears a little bit. I’m sure if Billy was here talking to you he would tell you straight up that he’s not trying to do what Tony or Doc did, but his roots are obvious. I do appreciate your support and watching this video.

@@streetwiseguitar5113 I concur. Aside from his flatpicking prowess, Billy Strings is more on the creative side of the Bluegrass genre than a lot of his contemporaries or predecessors. There are so many monster flatpicking guitarists out there now, thanks in part because of the advent of KZfaq, but Billy Strings actually writes music and creates new ideas aside from just playing bedazzling licks.

If you can strum a 3 chord progression, and hear the chord changes, you are ready to go sit in at a jam. Don't stay away because you don't know a bunch of songs.
