I have made a daytank in my boat about 10-12 years ago because I had serious problems with dirt in my main tank. I made it with the same options as you made it in your boat. But I have put the two filters in parallel with some ballvalves in between. This keeps only one filter in use at a time. When it is glogged by dirt I can easily switch over to the second filter and replace and clean the first filter. It can even be done with a running engine. Second of all I added some level switches in the daytank and I made some electric switching device with several automotive relais. This system automatically tops up the daytank as soon as the level is coming under a certain critical level. In case my filter should me glogged and the pump is not able to fill up this tank anymore, the level will drop under this critical level and an alarm is buzzing so I know my filter is glogged and I have to switch over to the other filter. At that moment I can run my engine for about 1,5 hours more before it will get no fuel anymore. This gives me plenty of time to switch over to the second, clean filter. Furthermore I have made a red and a green led on my dashboard so I can visually see that the pump is running (green led lights up). In case of an alarm the red light will light up. Meanwhile I know how long it takes the pump to top up the daytank again, so I allready get an indication of dirt in the filter when keeping an eye on the clock. On the switch board of the system I can choose for normal operation where the system runs as described. But I can also switch over to polishing mode in which the pumps keeps on running constantly. In this situation I always pump over my daytank and the daytank overflows in the main tank. And last but not least I have kept my old fuelsystem in place where I can still consume diesel straight away from my main tank. So if this daytank system would fail, which it never did sofar, I open/close some ball valves and continue without this whole daytank polishing system within a few minutes. This daytank system has been working for at least 10 years now and it never failed sofar. And since the fuel supply is more controlled than before I never even had a glogged filter anymore because i can see water and dirt collecting in the pre-filter. I wish you success with your project and waiting to see you sailing to Greenland.

Yes. My dad just made the dual filters run like you describe. He can switch to the unused one if the working one gets plugged.
@dougkirby4709
@dougkirby4709 Жыл бұрын
A vacuum gauge or vacuum indicator between the filters and pump enables monitoring of the filter condition so you know when to change them. Arguably the day tank system eliminates the need for dual filters which are a must on a demand system (fuel goes from the main tank direct to the engine). Be careful about the total intake losses for the pump:- suction lift plus suction friction losses plus filter losses all reduce the absolute available intake pressure to the pump which if reduced excessively will lead to pump cavitation, if you know the required pump intake pressure then the vacuum gauge will enable that to be monitored as well. Good luck and regards Doug.

But 100 million year old oil is also subject to biological degradation. The vast tar sands of northern Alberta once contained more fluid, short-chain hydrocarbons, but bacteria eventually consumed the most volatile short-chained compounds, leaving tar behind. The same process is slowly ongoing in Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.

I'm happy to hear from you two and specifically about your fuelling system details. I feel bad for you working in such heat. On your way north I hope you can spend some time here in Canada. I like the two raccor filters in line, but I would suggest having them both feeding into a manifold with valves to isolate either so maintenance can be performed individually on either filter while under power and if possible a third filter to act a a revolving serviced standby. You are fortunate to have clean fuel, but in remote locations the resupply quality can't always be assured. I hope your main tank(s) have a small port for easy dipping and I believe there is some substance that goes on your district to indicate water sitting below your tank outlet. Maintainable suppliers for gas stations might be a source for that.

Would kindly recommend you fit a fuelgauge and manual fill cap on the inspection hatch. And manual fill/transfer pump also nice. There will be many occasions you cannot leave the helm for filling a tank, pitching in swell is risky, you need to be sure of maintaining a full tank at alltime with overflow.

I must clean the diesel in a boat I have just purchased and perhaps I will make up a portable tank cleaning kit with a pump to circulate the diesel and some in line filters to polish the fuel. Good system, very wise addition for any bilge tanker. Was common in submarines and ships. Pony tank to many. For some it would be filled with starting mix before the lower grade fuel. Having a wooden boat with side tanks 3/4 of them above the injection pump the pony wasn’t required. Still need one for my heating. Enjoyed California’s plumbing issues I see, Washington was about as bad😅 Northern Passage sailors!

I have had i similar system in function for five years, works perfect. Beware of pumping flow to be within filter spec. Another issue, read Racor instructions. Filter housing to be filled to the brim. If not you will use approx half of the filter capasity. My daytank is about 140 litres and main holding 500 litres. The complete sirculation of main tank will be approx 6 hrs. Engine return diesel to daytank.

Nice setup. I don't like holes in the bottom of a diesel tank so I would have used top mounted pickup tubes to go to the engine and the heaters. I would also live without the drain and sight tube. That is just me though. My holding tank is set up the same way - no holes in the bottom of the tank. I also would not have put the two racors in series. I would have connected them in parallel with a select valve. That way if for some reason you plug a filter, you can switch over to the other and keep running while you change the plugged filter element. You didn't leave yourself a lot of space to changer filter elements.
@armslength2618
@armslength2618 Жыл бұрын
Series filters have several different pore sizes and/or filter types, which is why they need to be in series. Yes, you can build banks of filters in parallel to permit un-interupted flow during maintenance or plugging of one train, together with double block-and-bleed manifolds to permit easier and cleaner filter changes. I remember seeing banks of six large canisters for filtering fuel on large stationary backup generators, essentially two trains of 3 canisters each. Each train had various types of particulate and water filters. Multiple canisters also existed for filtering engine oil, but I think those were just to enable a backup path should one get plugged and/or need replacement.
@todddunn945
@todddunn945 Жыл бұрын
@@armslength2618 consider that he already has series filters since the on engine filter is in series with the racors no matter how he connects the racors. For cleaning the fuel in the main tank all he needs to do is run say a 2 micron racor element to the day tank. Then run the fuel from the day tank through a 10 micron filter. That will let him run a long time without changing the on engine filter. Also changing racor elements doesn't require bleeding although with his setup I would put a shut off valve after the racor filters so they won't drain out when the top is off. If he needs to add fuel to a racor filter after an element change he can use the in line fuel bulb. I do think he needs to run the fuel from the tank through a racor on its way to the engine. He may have that already, but he didn't show it.

If you use teflon tape to seal the threads remember you cannot turn the thread back after tightening. If you turn the thread back you risk leakage.
@armslength2618
@armslength2618 Жыл бұрын
You do have a little 'leeway' when using that Petrotape, but not much. I can back out 1/2-inch stainless fittings up to approx a quarter turn if need be, depending how tight I started for a line carrying 120 psi air. But you're right, it should be avoided. If the process is hydraulic oil I'd never back them out and keep the old tape on. But all bets are off with brass or aluminum, as I've never used such soft materials for pressure piping. That's more critical for NPT cut threads in low-pressure fuel gas service 'black pipe', which is mild steel. I'd only use blue-kevlar compound for that however, as an assembly lube and leak-check. Those threads are deformed a tiny bit when torqued up for the necessary seal, and certainly should never be backed off more than 1/8 turn. Most of the time however I've been involved with RFF (raised-face flanges) in class 150 or 300 sched 80 stainless or steel pipe with spiral-wound gaskets, but very seldom threaded black pipe. (Not a residential gas-fitter).

Thanks for taking us along on this interesting upgrade. what brand and model of pump, filter and manual prime bulb did you use and where did you source them? are brass fittings with teflon tape standard for marine diesel installations? what diameter fuel hose did you use to ensure adequate flow for engine operation. would length of your run dictate a larger diameter hose for sufficient motor operation compared to a straight run from the main tank?
@armslength2618
@armslength2618 Жыл бұрын
I'd wager that USCG B1-15 braided jacket reinforced rubber diesel hose is standard now, with threaded fittings attached to each end that can be tightly screwed into manifolds or female adapters. But I'd use standard Swagelok 1/2" fittings and 1/2" seamless 316 tubing for short segments between components and for long runs, because I'm familiar with it. A short piece of B1-15 hose would still be needed at the engine side to absorb vibration and prevent metal fatigue of the tubing, as well as at the day tank to provide a galvanic corrosion barrier between the stainless tubing and aluminum nozzles welded onto the day tank. The 3/8 nominal hose is the maximum diameter available and has an ID of 3/8". And 1/2" OD stainless tubing typically has a wall thickness of 0.05, up to 0.083 ", so the inside diameters of both can be very close. I'd just run that ID size everywhere.

The only additive was probably the red dye, which indicates that it is not taxed for road use. If the fuel was going to be used in cold climates, they would put in an additive to prevent the paraffin from separating. Diesel is very stable, especially compared to gasoline.
