Can't thank you enough for this video!! Just got back from Best Buy where I bought an $8 Sony ear bud set......and my noise crackling issues with my Hero10 are gone!!! I was about to buy an audio recorder after going through several mics, one of which was the purple panda. I was able to use the Panda adapter, and I'm good to go now!! You saved me at least $100, so I appreciate that very much!!

Great video!! I’ve used so many different options from… Purple panda, Power Dewise, Tascam (recently just died). I’ve seen this done before… with mixed reviews. I may just have to give this a try. Thanks for the solid run through. Well done!!

Awesome video man! And a pretty surprising solution! I use a Purple Panda as an actual lav mic on my shirt in my install videos, and recently tried it in my helmet and wasn't happy with it at all. It just sounded super muffled and flat compared to the Sony ECM-CS3 I've been using. I love how clear my Sony is, but I've been getting more and more popping and peaking over like 55mph, so I've been trying to find a solution. I'm thinking it may just be worn out after 2 years of abuse. Anyway, super thorough video! Great work dude!

haha that's awesome, I'm going to try something simuler to see how it works, I'm always doing everything I can to get the best video and audio as possible. Purple Panda mics pop and crackle if any wind hits them. The best sounding mic I have used so far is a Shure MVL lav, But I'm currently running Rode mics because they pick up more rumble from my bike. After so many times with GoPro not recording sound (yes I have quick record turned off). I'm now using a 32 bit float Zoom recorder that I actually fit in my helmet. this seems to be a never ending journey.

fact or cap… all facts. i recently got a go pro and i’ve failed miserably multiple trying to figure how my set up would work. i’ve had a few amazon mics but i went and got a pair of iphone headphones and taped them up in some black felt and it’s working awesome. hopefully i’ll be able to get some good content on todays ride and have my very first motovlog with commentary. huge thanks for this awesome idea!!

mic placement is critical to sound quality. As is a chin curtain and the type/shape of helmet you wear.

Thanks man! It does work. Just made myself 2 mics from two pairs of headphones (Samsung & HTC) simply cut the headphones off with the scissors 😂 I guess the key to success is to simply have a mic that has very low sensitivity. My mic from Amazon was 64 db!!! That's overkill!!! So no wonder I had cracking on speeds higher than 80 km/h! For example Purple Panda is only 4 db!

Been actively searching for a solution as well. My last option is to test the Blue Icepop Mic, it has a built in pop filter and is made by a reputable microphone company. No need for any adapters and no wires.

Blockhead also has a beard that he says helps with his audio to sound cleaner, just cause it helps keep the wind out his helmet lol. Sadly not a feature you can buy 🤣

I bought an external recorder and some lavs. To no avail, I can't get rid in any way of really hard wind noise inside a Schuberth helmet at >70Km/h (~50mph). I will give this a change but I didn't really understood the setup :/

I’m not totally sure I understand: your using an earbud from ph etc plugged in or ? I have the Purple Panda w adapter. I have a variety of earbuds.

This video was extremely helpful, I’ve been using a PurplePanda with a pop filter AND a windmuff inside my helmet. I’ve been fighting the wind noise for as long as I can remember, especially at speed. Tried different locations, wind muffs, etc. I WAS using a homemade apple mic with my Galaxy S10 to record external audio, but I had a gain problem where it would cut out completely at high volumes (exhaust or wind). Turns out that seemed to be an issue with the phone itself so I might try the apple mic again! Appreciate it!

@@EmilioExploring I was actually using the Voice Recorder app. Didn’t have any options to adjust gain so it was pretty limiting (which might’ve been the apps fault or the phone’s fault). Ditched the phone as an external recorder because I got the GoPro mic adapter. Ultimately want to get a Zoom H1n for external crisp “pure sound” audio.

I dug out an old iphone wired earbuds/mic after cutting off the ear pieces, and am using it on an OPEN FACE half helmet...the sound is amazaing - I put a dead cat on it, otherwise it is stock mic - better sounding than the purple panda or giant squid i use when I wear a full face helmet. thanks for the idea

Where are you placing the inline mic inside of your helmet. I've been playing around with this approach using a set of Skullcandy headphones w/inline mic, and getting a fair amount of clipping/excessive gain.

I got the original samsung s10 earbuds cut off the headphones a bit after the mic and i love the sound its very clear but i often get some sort of noises like static noises what could that be from and how can i fix it?

You're most probably hearing 'clipping', which is what you get when you go over certain speeds and the wind noise gets too high. You can drop a de-esser on your project timeline during editing to remove some of that.

I bought the adapter & the purple panda mic can't get it to work. I can't find a video on how to get it tow work or what setting I need to have on my GoPro hero 7 black to make the purple panda mic work plz help.

You need to use the TRRS to TRS adapter that comes with the mic as well. Converts the mic input signal to what the gopro can accept.

Im a bit confused on the difference between a 3.5 mm mic adapter and a mediamod. Is one better than the other or are they both the same in quality when a mic is attached?

GoPro’s can only use an external microphone by utilizing the media mod or their older mic adapter for the Hero 5 and newer. Media mods are only available on Hero 8 and newer. In my opinion the media mod is less reliable. My Hero 8 would randomly stop recording sound or video when I had my media mod connected. The external mic adapter they sell was way better. *you absolutely cannot use just any old USB C to 3.5 mic adapter on a GoPro. Like I said their mic adapters are mandatory for an external mic.

Now i just need a good mic to go against wind noise and breathing inside the helmet. I might try out your method as it seems very good quality! Thank you for the info.

Yes it did. It was only really a problem on the Hero 8 and somewhat on the 7. It worked well on the Hero 4 and the Insta 360 One R

What helmet are you using? That also will affect how loud the wind noise is as well. The more race oriented/carbon helmets will always have lots of wind noise. Great video!

I don't know why everyone is shilling for this Purple Panda microphone. The quality I get is awful when going 3.5mm to USB-C into a DJI Osmo Action 4. Tried a wide dB range. At speed, the mic is barely audible. At a standstill, it sounds like the mic is in my mouth while I am talking.

Try Sony ECMCS3 and Sony ECM LV1. They are great too!!!

I know the Sony ECMCS3 worked well with the Gopro Hero 4 but any newer than that it started to have issues with the new gopro mic adapters. Not sure about the ECM LV1 though.

Your Audio on the bike was horrible. I had to fast forward to the end. Did you fix it ? Wind was fine but your voice sounds pingy or Tremblie

Please don’t say this one over this one.Say the name of the one you are talking about. Purple Panda is better because-- Or squid is better because. The cons of each one. Do not keep switching back and forth not saying Wichita one you are talking about. I find it very confusion.
