Long before he was on Saturday Night Live, Mike Myers perfected his Wayne character on City Limits, as well as turning up in other skits from this legendary late night slice of the Toronto scene circa' 1984

Wow! I love the nostalgia of a lot of these old videos, but this one actually surprised me. I had no idea his Wayne character dated this far back before even Saturday night live(Wayne's world movie was 92, so almost a decade before that). This was a really neat find.

Story: When porting his variety to SNL, producer Lorne Michaels (A fellow Canadian btw) warned Myers that Toronto/Canada humor doesn't float well state side, but after some discussion they retooled and swapped Wayne Campbell's backdrop from "Toronto" to "Chicago" Also, at that same time there was a shortfall of skits to squeeze Dana Carvey in so under 20 minutes they threw on a wig and added a co-host: Garth As for Myers Scotsman: Mike Myers growing up in Canada had distant in laws from Scotland who visited multiple times. A childhood growing up hearing their accents he self taught how to nail the Scots accent. Also: Myers childhood also had Jewish neighbors who had the New York accent and he learned to speak like an old Jewish lady for his Cawfee Tawlk skits

Born in 1990, Wayne’s World has been my favorite movie since I stopped watching cartoons. Never had an interest in even watching the SNL skits, but today decided to look up the history. This is crazy! And 10 years before Wayne’s World. I’ve never seen Mike Meyers this young, actually I think he’s more attractive 10 years later & with the black wig. ☺️

Still close, this is early or mid 83’ and Ed/Chris started writing Bill and Ted in summer 84’!! Keanu also spent time in the Toronto area just like Myers, specifically in the early eighties, so yeah he probably got that from this!

I came here after reading Mike Myers' book titled 'Canada', which has stories of his early career. Mike tells about how he knew Christopher Ward of MTV back when they were both in the Second City touring company, and Christopher offered Mike a guest spot on the City Limits show. Mike went with his character "Wayne Campbell" and pretended to be Christopher's cousin from Scarborough, who had snuck past security and crashed the show. It was such a successful performance that some viewers were fooled into thinking they were letting punks from Scarborough onto Canadian airwaves. Mike would continue to do guest spots on the show as Wayne Campbell in '85 and '86.

Ward was very generous in the skits, too.

I was wondering if the writers and/or actors of Bill & Ted saw this! It seems like more than a coincidence! I also wonder how Mike felt when he saw the movie in 1989 (his first year on SNL).

This changes everything. In the debate over which came first, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure or Wayne's World, until now I was firmly in the Bill and Ted camp, especially after learning that the film was in the can for two years before being released in 1989. But after hearing Wayne say "Bogus!" in this clip from 1984 in a very similar tone and cadence as what B&T later would, and knowing that early drafts had Bill and Ted timetravel in a VAN instead of a phonebooth, I'm wavering. Possible kleptoamnesia?

Matheson and Solomon started writing the script in Summer 84 according to the Bill & Ted 2005 DVD Bonus Disc interviews, when the two were 24 and 23 respectively Solomon had written on Laverne and Shirley as the youngest writer in the Acting Guild was able to pull Matheson in with their improv characters (apparently there was also a third, coincidentally like Wayne’s cousin and Garth’s brother later on) Both are California natives, but Keanu and his family moved to Toronto in 1980 and according to Ed & Chris Keanu and Alex came in to the audition the same way they portrayed them on screen Myers is three to four years younger than Ed & Chris, but Keanu is the same age!
