High School. Hawaii. Early 60's. The school had an official Surfing Day where everybody was given the day off to head to the beach. Makaha was the place for the surf vets, pros, and the wannabe's. Sunset was the place for noobs and Waimea Bay for surfing with your body but the high coral could do some damage. Huge 20-30 foot north shore waves during the winter but only for the brave or foolish. Concerts with real 'battle of the bands' where surfing music played until the late evenings. Lots of surf music on KORL and KPOI radio.These sounds bring back fond memories of the best 3 years of my life. Hope the kids of today can have those great times.

+demonic sweaters The Hard Rock Cafe did a much better Surf compilation CD (along with many more people), and they didn't have the gall to put "best of" in the title! (And they only had three songs with vocals, one of which being Surfer Joe by The Surfaris.) In fact, I don't even see how anyone can call their Surf compilation a "best of," and not have anything by Dick Dale in it!!
@GOFLuvr8 жыл бұрын
Chikkn Lipps Of course... And my opinion is what it is, because this CD calls itself "the best," and there's a case to be made that the best Surf songs did not make this compilation.
@chikknlipps20588 жыл бұрын
GOFLuvr Well, alright. I actually don't like Dick Dale (save for 1 song), but maybe that's because he's on, like, every surf compilation ever. I feel like it's overdone and a bit cliche.

Chikkn Lipps You're the first person I ever saw that had an interest in Surf but not Dick Dale... But I'm not judging you at all. (To tell a secret, I never could get into Link Wray.) This is a superb compilation. Although there never was a band called "The Surftones" in the 60's. It's a hoax by the Steve Hoffman who made this compilation. Story goes he needed a good opening track for this compilation and he and his friend Frosty Horton wrote this song together and put in on this compilation. Cecilia Ann really got attention after "The Pixies" covered the tune on the album "Bossanova". The rest is history! ;-) There is another great "hoax 60's Surfband" called " The Blue Stingrays" who are supossed to be "The heartbreakers" minus Tom Petty. There album "Surf-N-Burn" is really a fantastic laid back surf party....Although made in the early 90's....

Fantastic stereo. Modern music production isn't nearly as aggressive with the separation as on these old tracks.
@JonVlogs1232 жыл бұрын
Yup! :)
@patrickisswayze34466 ай бұрын
That's because stereo was originally designed to emulate listening to a live performance so everything was mixed like you were sitting in the audience so horns would be on one side, guitar on the other or organ or what have you. Gotta remember this was before headphones were a common thing. If you were listening it was through a smaller component stereo with the speakers far apart, a stereo hifi console, or a mono am radio. So that's how stuff was mixed, everybody had a console hifi back then and pretty much every car had a mono am radio with a speaker in the center of the dash. That's what cutting edge was back then.
@DutchDiederik6 ай бұрын
@@patrickisswayze3446 That makes sense. I have a HiFi setup in the living room with two tower speakers. It is still the optimal way to listen to music, in my opinion. This still sounds good on headphones, and you're right that the effect is even more pronounced.

Not old enough by some distance to have experienced a lot of these tunes but I have very dear memories of driving back from the Southern Atlantic beaches of France after long days in the ocean with my parents and siblings in the late 1980's early 90's, listening to the Beach Boys and in particular All Summer Long. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Haven't heard that song in a long time.

We referred to the (knee bumps) as (surfer's knots). Like the song, "my surfer's knots are risen".
@ivanleterror91582 жыл бұрын
If anyone tells you "surfing knots" disappear, not true. They're not as big, but still there.

teens should appreciate masterpieces like this, not just all those electro-pop songs with cursing. i feel bad for them not knowing what REAL MUSIC is. i'm 14 and you dont need to be old to love these kind of things, they're magically precious.

I first heard G.T.O. in a FarCry game. Heard it on the radio later, found out what it was called and fell in love with it.

One of my favorite modern day surf rock bands, “The Buttertones”, just disbanded and will be no more after some band members were accused of statutory rape and now Im here trying to find more surf rock to listen to and replace them because they were one of my favorites :(
