If you look at the map of the Yucatan Peninsula, you will see the archeological sites and cities create a circle, which I wish to name “Diamond Crown of Yucatan”: Uxmal, Merida, Izamal, Chichen-Itza, Valladolid, Tulum, Coba, and Ek Balam. Today I invite you to join me and see all these fascinating historical places of the ancient Maya world. Archaeologists continue to reveal new facts and still some mysteries of Yucatán remain unsolved. Why did the ancient builders of Ek Balam cover the main Temple’s walls with images of angels? Why did an American archaeologist name the sacred lake in Chichen-Itza the “Well of Virgins”? Why is a tiny replica of the idol of Chaak-mool so popular among the tourists of Chichen-Itza? (I personally wouldn’t take it even if it’s made out of gold and given to me for free). The more I read and learn about Maya civilization, the more I believe that history is a deep well and not all of us are capable of seeing what is hidden below the surface.
