I've lived in Arizona for 35 years, and I have a suggestion. Take Bates Well Road South from Ajo. When you reach Bates Well [around 25 miles South of Ajo], turn West on El Camino Diablo. Follow the Camino 135 miles West to Yuma. In a lifetime of exploring desert places, this is the best place I've found. I lack supperlatives to convey just how beautiful this place is. Be careful, though. Make sure you get a permit from the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge office in Ajo. The Cabeza Prieta is part of the Goldwater Air Force Range and you will see live firing. Go armed. There is a lot of smuggling going on in the Cabeza. Most important of all, treat this trip like an expedition to the remote region it is. Take LOTS of water [there is none out there], and plan for every contingency. All the hassle is worth it. Your reward will be seeing the best desert place in North America.

Saguaro pronounced (swore o). My favorite cactus, they grow new arms to keep them straight and tall. When they start to lean, a branch will grow from the opposite side to keep them straight. Have you seen them with a flower yet. Love to see them flower. Walking across the desert you can find sea shells from when it was all under water. Have you found any desert rose. They are rocks, not easily found. I love Arizona. It's also illegal to take saguaro's or damage them. When building a new house or putting in new roads they have to be dug up and replanted. In drought they get skinny and when it rains they swell up. They are actually hollow inside. Like I said that's my favorite cactus. Sorry to ramble on.

Hi Richie, Here are a few more facts about the Great Saguaro Cacti. So glad you Love Arizona and your interest in Everything Arizona. The saguaro cacti will only grow in the Sonoran desert. With the right growing conditions, it is estimated that saguaros can live to be as much as 150-200 years old. Saguaro can grow to be between 40-60 feet tall (12-18m). When rain is plentiful and the saguaro is fully hydrated it can weigh between 3200-4800 pounds. The holes that birds nested in or "saguaro boots" can be found among the dead saguaros. Native Americans used these as water containers long before the canteen was available. After the saguaro dies its woody ribs can be used to build roofs, fences, and parts of furniture. The Saguaro Cacti and their white flowers are Arizona's State Cactus and the States flower. It's plump bright red Fruit is used for Cactus Jelly, and food for birds. It is a traditional indigenous food source. Check out Saguaro National Park is in southern Arizona. Its 2 sections are on either side of the city of Tucson. The park is named for the large saguaro cactus, native to its desert environment. In the western Tucson Mountain District, Signal Hill Trail leads to petroglyphs of the ancient Hohokam people. In the eastern Rincon Mountain District, Cactus Forest Drive is a loop road with striking views of the desert landscape. I didn’t want it to end! Those cacti are amazing, and I saw one with four arms, 50-100 years per one arm WOW!! You have a gift for capturing the beauty and grandeur of that amazing country. Many of those last giant stones had perfectly flat sides!! And I was thinking Sphinx head just before you said it! Again Richie, thank you so much, these terrific trips with you help bring my mind back to normal in this bizarre chaotic time ❤️🙏🏼

Thank you Richie I've been on that road I lived in Tempe with my cousin for awhile and she Clued me in on a lot of things as she was a native AZ resident These cactus were a real big deal to her since they only grow in a narrow band thru AZ CA and that's it for the entire world and don't forget about Tortilla Flats ....population 6 when I was there

It looked EXACTLY like a sphinx!!! I was blown away by that. Very interesting. We have no idea about our real history. Thanks again for a great video.

I don't know who remembers the Camel Cigarette ads from the 1970's . But they use to have a saying " ONE OF A KIND " .... At times watching your rig in these remote locations reminds be so much of these ads ... 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂 Regardless of the Ads , You Richie and that amazing Toyota of yours are definitely " One of a Kind " !! Both KZfaq and everyone watching are lucky to have you . 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
