Pad Kra Pao with Kai Dao (Holy Basil Stir Fry)🍃🌶🍳
The dish literally means stir fried holy basil. 🍃
You can make it in less than 30 minutes! ⏲
This dish is super delicious and packed with flavor. It is the best with a fried egg on top and served on a bed of hot jasmine rice. 🍚
The flavor profile is savory, salty, spicy, with subtle hints of sweetness and sweet spice from the holy basil.
Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 15 min
Serves 3-4
What you’ll need:
1 lb minced meat of choice (I used pork)
14 garlic cloves (I love garlic)
12 Thai chili peppers (less if you can’t handle spice)
2 large eggs (for topping)
1 cup loosely packed holy basil or Thai basil
Seasonings:
1/2 Tbsp fish sauce
1/2 Tbsp seasoning sauce
1 Tsp dark soy sauce
1/2 Tbsp oyster sauce
1/2 Tbsp sweetener of choice (sugar, agave, honey) use less if you like less sweet.
Cooked jasmine rice (1 cup)

"Kra Pao" is the Thai name of Holy basil, different from italian basil. I'm growing some and can't wait until I get enough to make this dish.

​@@ilakaizen4926 “Pad Kra Pao,” is a dish in Thailand that translates to “holy basil stir-fry” the Kra Pao is specifically holy basil. There are actually over 100 different types of basil in the world. Thai basil is a type of basil, but it is different from Holy Basil. Imo thia basil tastes more like licorice than holy basil does.

I'm pretty confident I've never tasted holy basil. So I just emulate the restaurant taste of Krapow with thai basil.

difficult to locate krapao but the horaphao variant works just fine. I'm a regular Thai food cooking guy and I'm still uncertain what 'seasoning sauce' is.

Try it with dried chilli instead of the fresh chilli you will love it better.

They used to serve this one or two times a week at the International School Bangkok cafeteria. They had a whole lane dedicated to Asian food. I used to get rice soup with meatballs for breakfast every morning.

Holy basil is not available in my area 😭 I use thai sweet basil but taste is not really the same.

The Brand is called Golden Mountain sauce. Taste close to it is Maggi seasoning liquid. But tbh you can skip it and use just fish sauce and oyster sauce.

@@soysauce4087 That bottle design was found by visual means. Numerous other brands offer similar bottles with pre-printed labels, but I don't think any include oil. By the color, I would have guessed he's using Caiziyou (roasted rapeseed oil), though this hard to source oil doesn't seem to be commonly used in Thai cooking -- like coconut, palm, peanut and soybean. Any guesses?

So this is weird. I don't "pepper spray" myself when I cook the chilies. But when I rinse the dishes in cold water, that's when the molecules release into my eyes and lungs.

Looks good, but you didn't give enough directions. You need to turn off the heat when you add the Thai basil or they burn easily. Also, you didn't deep fry the egg. You need more oil than that for it to be authentic Thai style. I grew up in Thailand. Trust me. My krapow is god tier.
