I love Patty Melts, when I lived in California as a kid in the late 60's, there was a dinner down the street from where I worked. They used to make them but they called them "Beefeaters". They looked just like yours, but I think they used Rye bread. I still love them to this day and I'm 66 years old. I may just make my own later in the week.

A patty melt is also more like a smash burger typically where the burger is smashed down and thinner and even cooked higher temperature and faster. Like a steak ‘n Shake would do. Whereas a burger is typically fatter and cooked a little slower. I also consider the cheese, bread and condiments to be different typically in a patty melt, Frisco melt or smash burger versus just a burger.
