Episode 6: Wildlife Photography is about much more than cameras. Lonely hours spent in rain, heat and cold in pursuit of the shot. But it's not just the shot we get at the end of the day, right? You know why you do it. We all do.

Great video and a great adventure. Absolutely saddened to learn of your father's issue and I hope that he came through it OK. You were right to head home, when life is at stake, every moment, every opportunity is precious. Thanks Catherine much appreciated! I noticed the Buffalo had lovely clean ears (all the small patches of blood are removed ticks) you don’t see that in degraded environments - the oxpecker birds are threatened by the use of cattle dip so have become rare in many areas and the animals suffer greatly as a result,

Will, I’m a huge fan of all your videos but this one really is among the most wonderful of them. Deeply moved by the end as you shared the news of your dad. It resonates very deeply as my mum slips deeper into dementia. I’m so glad your dad made it through that very worrying battery situation. As others have said, your content should be a Netflix or Amazon series. Absolutely fantastic stuff, love it! Keep doing what you do, sir. Very best wishes to you and your family. Dan ☺️🙏🏼💚

@@WillGoodlet I am glad to see that your dad is well! I have always enjoyed your excellent storytelling and your great videography! I enjoyed the moments with the African Harrier-Hawk, and the Pearl-spotted Owlet! Have you ever used a drop-in polarizing filter with your 400 f/2.8? I am considering the drop-in filter for my EF lens; especially for when the sun gets harsh as it often does not too long after a summer sunrise.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын
@@christiaanackermann8953 no I haven’t used one on the canon but I have on my 100-400 and my sigma 300-800 which comes standard with it. It does assist but I Don’t think it’s that important important to justify the expense on the drop in type. I just screw one on the 100-400 and save the cash
@christiaanackermann8953
@christiaanackermann8953 Жыл бұрын
@@WillGoodlet I understand your position about the drop-in vs screw thread, but like your 400mm, my EF supertelephoto lens doesn't have screw thread; so (understanding that not all of us value filters like others), do you value a polarizer for wildlife photography (not considering video, macro, etc). I am not going to buy it solely based on your answer; just trying to get an opinion.

Welcome back. Superb as always. Of course you are a Pink Floyd fan… Hemingway and Floyd quoted in the same video! Brilliant narrative - the excitement in your voice as you tell us what you can see is so engaging, and really brings an extra dimension to the already great images. A lesser man would have edited out the anger and bitter piece - leaving it in makes you all the more the Will we admire. So glad your dad battled through that. Get back out in the wilderness soon.

Will, At 71 I have given up hunting for wildlife photography. I have many trophies mounted from many very memorable hunts. However the contact I now have with nature and the photos I have of birds are more meaningful to me at my current place in life. Over the past three months I have had the opportunity to view many of your videos of how to photography and have enjoyed them very much. Tonight I was able to see your “Bitter Road...”. Will, this video has got to be the best I have ever seen, bar none. I can’t wait for my wife to view the video. You have awakened something within me, that inspires me to try to follow as best I can in the time I have left. God bless you and your family, job well done.

Hi Conny, thanks for watching and I'm so sorry to hear that you are struggling to walk. I was badly electrocuted in 2018 along with snapped muscles and other injuries. The worst was that I lost my ability to move and walk and the doctors couldn't tell me why. I thought that this was going to be it forever. Eventually, over the next two years, I started to recover and I am much better now although I will never be the same as I was. It was an awful time in my life and I have extraordinary sympathy for what you must be going through. I know what you mean about being a photographer with goals. I spent a lot of time thinking about that. I still think about it daily, and it is one of the underlying themes in this video. The time left to us. I don't have any kind of solution, except to keep doing what we love in any way we can, to keep close to nature and not to imagine that there is some sort of destination. The only thing that counts is the family that loves us, the sunlight and the birdsong and the photo we are going to take today.

Great video man! The lyrics from Time fit your narrative really well (though I may be bias since that's one of my top 5 fav bands of all time) 😁 Also, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, but glad he was okay in the end. I just lost my father to cancer recently and it's been rough, but I'm glad I was able to get out there and be with him in the end. Every time I film wildlife videos now, they're for him, because that was his favorite thing of mine that he watched on my channel.

Hi Brent, thanks for watching and the kind comment here. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. My mum died of cancer too and I know exactly what you mean about getting out there. It's where I feel closest to her memory. I'm glad you had that connection with your dad and so good that he got to see you doing what you love. It's not only him who enjoyed watching your wildlife videos either! I'm a fan too. Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much for watching and commenting and for the good wishes, much appreciated. The impala lambs will likely drop in November, it can be a very good time especially for longer trips where the inevitable rain will not ruin the whole thing. It can be risky but very rewarding. I do love the green of summer.

Top shelf nature video, Will! Sorry about your dad's troubles. I can relate to your care giver situation. I was sole caregiver for my dad who also had Parkinson's for 10 years and then for my mother with dementia for 5 years. It's a tough slog but worth it.

Very cool video Will! Brilliantly made and extremely well narrated, plus you're also making me even more impatient to save up the money for the new long lense haha. Also, that shot at the end was mega! After your response to my comment on your M50 video, I think I'm going to go for a 100-400 instead of the 400 5.6 cause of more versatility and it'll probably be better for my Surf Photography. Probably will go for the Tamron 100-400 instead of the Sigma cause I've heard the autofocus is better. All the best to you and your family dude 👍

Good to see you back on KZfaq, Will; hope all is well with your dad. I miss the Kruger so much and your videos capture the essence of how we experience it. In Sep, we managed to get back there for the first time in four years. I think I pinned too much on the trip: all kinds of things conspired to prevent me getting the shots I wanted on my shiny new R5 and 100-500. What you say about “photograph worthy” moments is so true. We returned home to Aus deflated, knowing it will be another two years before we get to go again. Long story short: we live vicariously through your videos, so please keep doing them! Cheers and best, Mark.

Hi Mark, thanks for watching and sorry for the slow response here. I'm sorry to hear about Kruger. September is usually so good!! I hope you enjoyed being back in the bush at least? I know how you feel. I felt this trip was a whitewash for me too - especially after the two years wasted during covid. I hope you are putting that combo to good use in Aus at least and getting ready for next time. I guess we can't control what happens, the best we can do is to enjoy the time we do get and try again.
