After decades as a Pentaxian, I eventually switched to Fujifilm (X-T2, then X-T4) and, a few months back, a Sony A7C. I didn't plan to go with Sony but I found the A7C in classifieds for a ridiculously low price. I couldn't resist. I like the size and, with a compact or pancake lens, it would be perfect to do street of travel photography. In all honesty, I have been looking at a camera that would help me compensate for my shaking hands and failing eyesight. Then Sony came out with the A7IV and the A7RV. I went with the latter. I turn 69 in 2 weeks and I decided that I could make a few $acrifice$ and treat myself for this type of camera. I have 2 say that the A7RV is the best one for me so far! Really enjoying it, even though it may be too much camera for me.

You have a great setup....!! If you do not print big and pixel peep, you can also try a cheap used Olympus E-M1 Mark II or III with its 17mm f2.8 lens. The stabilisation is excellent for helping with shaky hands. I use a mark II myself and suggested the same to my Uncle, who is 72. He is very happy with the weight and stabilisation.

I have been a professional Pentaxian since the 80s (yes, we do exist), but have recently switched mostly to Sony. While I love the build quality, ergonomics, and UX of my Pentax gear (I kept a K-1 and a slew of lenses), the tech of the new Sonys, especially regarding autofocus, is just too awesome to pass up.

As a professional who has used the Sony A6300, A6400, A73, A74, and currently the A7S3 I can honestly say that the A73 is the best camera Sony has put out. It’s perfect for photos, provides amazing 4K video, and is inexpensive compared to the new A74. For someone who wants to take photography and videography seriously, I think the A73 is a perfect fit.

Just last fall, I happened upon a used A7 III with a low shutter count. Try as I might to justify trading it in for a new or used A7 V, I really can’t. The A7 III menu system is bonkers (but worked-around with customization) and the screen that doesn’t flip is odd (but I prefer the EVF, anyway).

I think the most important piece of advice for beginners is to BUY USED! Due to the lower price, you can either save money on the same camera, or get a better camera for the same price. Especially if buying from B&H, KEH, Adorama, etc., there is very little risk associated as well.

One of the great things about the a6600 is its size. Plus the apsc lens line up is great. Pair it with the highly rated 70-350 zoom and whatever Sony or third party lens to fill in the wide range (for example the tamron 17-70) and you have a compact kit for travel photos. We do some motorcycle travel and size matters-haha- small and mighty.

I was an A7iii early adopter in 2018 and it's still going strong, I also have an A6400 that I picked up a few weeks ago as a good travel camera, replacing my A6300 that's now used as a webcam. I love how compact and portable they are and I love the amount of 3rd party lens support they've had in the last several years, the days of adapting lenses are done I think. I do wish Sony would do something about the ergonomics though, would it kill Sony to add a joystick to their APS-C bodies? That control layout is mostly unchanged since the A6000 9 years ago.. Thankfully the AF is so good you barely need it. Cheers!

I am transitioning from D750 to Sony mirrorless, and my #1 reason is to shed the weight and regain my love of photography. I am not shooting because it’s too cumbersome and I shake with it too much. Everything I researched said a6600 was lightweight choice and I found some great 2.8 lenses with it that I was excited about, but now I am a bit concerned going from a full frame D750 to the APSC sensor. I do love the price and weight tho. If anyone can share perspectives, I’d love to see them, thank you!

Nice overview, you two. One thing I recommend you include in your next review is the key difference in weight between APS-C and full frame systems. The APS_C bodies WITH their respective lens system are often smaller and lighter, and choosing a higher resolution sensor camera could put you on a par with some full-frame systems, something a landscape photographer hiking up mountains could appreciate.
@Taudris

Tony already has some fantastic content comparing sensor sizes. It would be nice to see a video that does a practical comparison of Sony's APS-C and FF systems based on the lenses available for each, and the use cases each are optimal for. Most photos and videos can be taken by APS-C size sensors just fine. It's at the extremes (widest angle, widest aperture, and/or lowest ISO) where FF truly makes a difference. FF also produces sharper results on average since LW/PH is higher for a larger image circle by default due to optical physics/economics.

I love my FX3 for anything on the go since it is good for photos and video. It also serves as a great B-Cam for my FX9! My typical client shoot setup has been a static FX9 and a moving FX3 on a gimbal (mostly weddings so far, a couple documentaries, and some training videos). I decided on those cameras because I had a semester of University funds leftover due to circumstances around 2020 (take a guess), and I had the choice of either down paying student loans or investing in nicer equipment I needed for school anyways but could use for professional situations as well. While new life choices and adventures have led me to not use them as much for client work, I still love them and use them a lot for personal projects ^_^ I won't lie though, the A1 is very tempting, though I kinda want to wait for the next generation of it since my current gear is doing me good in most every situation and I have been able to adjust my shots enough to get what I need.

I don't agree about your assessment of the flash on the a6xxx series, one of the reasons I have not upgraded my a6500 to the a6600 is them removing the flash (the buffer is smaller too). I use it more than you I think i would but it is a great little flash because of the mechanism use to store the flash allows you to use your finger and point the flash up and ceiling bounce it. In a pinch when you need to react fast it is a great little flash to keep that iso down indoors.

The a7RIVA is a powerhouse of a camera, don’t underestimate the AF performance, it isn’t complex either like the RV. Buying used in excellent condition costs somewhere in the range of $2,200.. that is bargain!

Truly like the A7c; it’s appeal is really it’s size, but don’t most of the ff lenses pretty much defeat it’s purpose for travel? It seems like the APSC line a much better fit if you want something that can fit in a large pocket and want to be able to get outside (hiking etc). Total gear should be around 1kg or only a bit more in my view. Appreciated the overview!

When I first started photography 40 years ago I was a Nikon shooter, but with new digital cameras, I tried shooting with the Nikons they just couldn’t get the focus spot on. So I switched to Sony a7Riii which is great 42 mega pixels. But I couldn’t afford the Sony G master lens’s so here’s what I have Sigma 24mm art lens, 50mm cheap Sony lens, 85mm cheap Sony lens, and the one I love the most is the Samyang 135mm 1.8 lens, it’s amazingly sharp, anyway that’s my lineup. Now looking for a bigger backpack for all my gear. I’ve been using Sony now for about 4 years and loving it.

I think, since I am filming mostly on DJI Osmo Pocket devices (2 persons, walking and showing travel views), so any type of video style camera would be upgrade. I am mostly interested about ZV-E1, 7SIII and FX3. Per your video, since inside is almost identical and ZV has more "social media" features, I am quite convinced by your video go for it. Thank you

Another great video guys! I am still head over heels in love with my a7siii after 2 and a half years. I do wish that Sony would give us a firmware update with focus breathing comp and animal eye in video, but other than that, I feel like my camera is still one of the best in class for video, and I am STILL blown away by the footage I take. Best camera I ever owned by far! I primarily shoot video but it works really well for me as a hybrid, the photos I get are excellent quality especially when paired with my Sony glass. I do also have a cheeky Fuji XT4 which I adore for photo only shoots when I want to feel a bit old school, but my a7siii is my go to and my pride and joy. What I adore about Sony cameras is autofocus. rarely missing a shot is huge when you are low on time, light is changing or you are filming out in the real world you have no control over. And yes I agree the 9 million dot viewfinder is INSANE and that is why I would still pick the a7siii over the ZV-E1 or FX3 every time - I use it all the time when shooting outside and it's critical in sunshine and even more so in places like beaches where there is a lot of sun and ambient reflection. I don't think the viewfinder gets talked about enough! Can I just quickly mention HLG and HDR production - I got into this last year on my a7siii and now shoot all my real estate in HLG3 and its looks INSANE. I'm kinda shook that more people aren't producing HDR content online, as Dolby Vision video will automatically play in SDR if no HDR screen is detected it's a win win and KZfaq fully supports it you just upload one HDR file that's it! Anyway sorry went off piste it just looks SO GOOD! Love watching your videos because I am just so into camera gear and love geeking out with you, I feel part of the club I know that's sad 🤣

Sony make a 90mm macro. Many folk love it and rave about how sharp it is, but it is slow to autofocus, in fact some times I find it very difficult to focus but then I’m using hand held not on a tripod. It is an old lens, has a push pull manual/auto function on the barrel which you love or hate. It’s not like any other Sony lens and so I forget about this all the time. It must be due to be refreshed soon so either wait for the upgrade or get the current one more cheaply. I’ve a feeling Tamron might also have a len/lenses labelled macro but don’t recall if they are true macro or just have some close focusing.

I shoot the A1 as most of my shooting is for BIF, but it works great with everything I point it at. It's by far the most productive camera I've ever owned, with amazing AF hit acquition times and amazing tracking. Would kill for the A7RV style flip screen to allow me to shoot more easily from a low-to-the-ground or above-my-head perspective in portrait aspect ratio. Other than that, it's been gold.

Tony & Chelsea, have you explored the performance of the a7Rv in its 26 mp full frame RAW mode? Dustin Abbott thinks that shooting it in that mode may be superior for low light astro. I'm also wondering if it reads the sensor faster and if it writes to the cards faster in 26 mp FF RAW vs. 60 mp (I think it should). Unless planning to crop very deeply, 26 mp is usually than ample. Wo when speed is demanded, shoot the a7Rv in its 26 mp mode? I have used the a7Rv and intend to purchase. Mostly I use my a7Riv. I sold my a7iv in anticipation of purchasing the a7Rv, which could replace both the a7iv and the a7Riv for my needs, but likely I will retain my a7Riv as a backup. Regarding the a7c, lack of a front control wheel and having only 1 custom button are deal breakers.

On your recommendation on another video, we bought a Canon EOS RP just to experiment with mirrorless world. Cameras are expensive. Lenses cost other extra dollars. We are border-line photography enthusiasts and have decided to use economical cameras and spend money on traveling and on photography instead. We think those Canadian $3000 and above cameras give diminishing returns.

I think the best camera is what one presently owns and learns how to use. I have had a Sony a6500 for nearly 5 years and I am still learning how to use it and I take lots of photos and videos of the grandkids and family events. It’s much better than a phone camera. I do like the built-in flash. It’s not perfect but it has a great response time compared to a hot shoe flash and the results (at least for me) are comparable. Plus, less cumbersome to carry around. I looked at upgrading to the a7C but with the lenses I already have I could not justify the investment even with trading in my camera body and lenses. If a made a living with photography, I certain my response would be totally different. I enjoy your videos. I’ve picked up some useful hints/techniques to improve my photography. When shooting grandkids and family parties there is not time to stage a photo (no one wants to cooperate). It becomes one of those “now or never” moments. Thanks for you videos.

I'm using a ZV-E10 although I know it was design for vlogging/video, I mostly use it for Photography... my reason for that is: - First, I have a bad eyesight that means I always wear a Eyeglasses. So not having a EVF is not a big deal for me. - Second, if we compare a6100 to ZV-E10. ZV-E10 has a latest firmware, better Auto Focus, updated color science. and I mean, seriously the only thing you would consider a a6100 is because of the EVF. but ZV-E10 is better on that price range..

I think you can't beat the A7iv (for hybrid) and FX30 (for video) for value for money. The A1 is the speed king, the A7Rv the high resolution king. The FX3 and A7Siii are best for video, whereby I personally prefer the A7Siii for the viewfinder and the shutter. I am less tempted by all the other models. The older A7Riii is now an absolute bargain, and I always loved the image output out of that camera for photography.

But i sold all of my gear and got a Fuji, added the X-H2 lately. It does everything for my private needs, can shoot 8k if i want, tho i stick to 4k downsampled from 8k. The funny thing is i dont miss my favorite glass i had on the Sony's - the Sigma 135mm 1.8. For the Fuji i grabbed the Viltrox 75mm 1.2 which gives me pretty much the same results. I'd go as far and would say even better than the big Sigma gun. i kept my Godox flashes, just switched the trigger (love that).
