Be careful with it being too responsive on a stock GTE you don’t want more then 650 wheel torque under 4500 rpm or you risk bending a rod. I know you aren’t shooting for high HP. But torque is what kills these motors not HP. Just make sure your tuner is aware and holds off on timing down low. Love the build!
@Skirk84
@Skirk84 2 жыл бұрын
It's not to do with what RPM you make the torque, It's just a general thing with response that if you are making any decent power you will make more torque and you will make it earlier. But its just the peak torque figure that puts stress on the engine. I think 800nm is safe, 850nm is where I'd run it and did for 7 years. I'm making roughly 100kw every 1000rpm until 6000rpm, and then slowly building more toward redline. Response is the way to go.

@@Skirk84 when does boost come on for you? What turbo are u running? And what are you doing to bring boost on sooner and make it more responsive
@darianistead2239
@darianistead2239 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, massive cylinder pressures low in the rpm will break shit in glorious fashion lol, because those pressures are sustained within the cylinder longer. A response engine should be "built" more so than a higher hp one. You can build pressures gradually over rpm and have a big power figure but results are a safe lazy engine.

@@lordoftherims436 My thought process is without active cooling across the rotor I'd rather keep the radiant/contact heat out of the caliper than try and dispell it. Would be an interesting experiment to see if there are different situations where a coated caliper is better than uncoated or even a caliper with a finned heat sink with proper ventilation.

I'd really like to see dyno tests done on different sized charge piping lengths and volumes etc. I have always thought that as long as your blow off valve is not dumping all the charge there should be no real difference in response once the boost pressure has been achieved. Think of an air compressor tank a little tank may fill quicker but it will empty quicker but a really large tank once filled will take a lot longer to empty. So bigger pipes etc may ultimately reduce lag.

I didn’t see anyone mention it, but I think he might be meaning twin turbo and not twin scroll. A twin scroll turbo is just an turbo designed for better efficiency. A twin turbo has two turbos. But what’s funny is that the stock 2j has sequential turbos, so there are two turbos but it’s not really called twin turbos; although this obviously varies if you change the setup. Anyway, just some random facts I guess.

I love you guys and I love the content you make but the pedant in me just has to make a point about the intercooler pipe sizing. Sure 10 liters sounds like a big difference but then you have to consider that a turbo 2jz is capable of flowing hundreds of liters of air per second. The difference in time to fill the pipes is in the milliseconds, quite literally less than the blink of an eye. There is absolutely no harm in running the smaller pipe if you don't intend on making large amounts of horsepower but in the real world changing from 3" to 2.5" piping is not going to change turbo response enough for you to notice.
@speedacademy
@speedacademy 2 жыл бұрын
Talk to Ben from Artec who designs the manifolds and has done a ton of dyno testing which has shown that smaller piping actually does make quite a difference. In an ideal world we would have built two systems with both diameters and tested both to show the real world results.
@ClaytonYatescarenthusiast
@ClaytonYatescarenthusiast 2 жыл бұрын
I agree the smaller tubing is a big mistake. know the testing isn't there like that guy said cause it's not scientific possible. Maybe .01 seconds but it'll be slower everywhere and just more restriction. If the turbo wasn't restricted with a blow off valve and was running past efficiency range of the turbo than smaller piping will help but in this case its a restriction and will lower response time possibly. If better not much
@jeffsymons7084
@jeffsymons7084 2 жыл бұрын
@@speedacademy A non turbo 2jz will flow over 70 liters of air per second at 3000rpm. Once you add a turbo on obviously there is even more air flowing. 10 liters takes only a fraction of a second to fill. You don't need to build two systems when some simple math can provide the answer. As I said I am a big fan of the channel and I am not trying to be critical of you. It's a bit disappointing that you blow me off and tell me to go talk to someone else when I have tried to be as respectful as possible and provided you with numbers which back my point. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the pipe size you have chosen, I just believe that in the absolute worst case you are looking about 0.15 of a second difference to fill the pipe. This is one of those old turbo debates that has been around the internet for decades where people like to claim the difference is hundreds or thousands of rpm or measurable in entire seconds. I just wanted to bring some perspective of how small the difference is. I have no doubt your supra will perform and sound great no matter what size piping you choose and I look forward to seeing it finished.
@speedacademy
@speedacademy 2 жыл бұрын
Im not blowing you off by any means, we aren’t the experts in this field by any means rather going off of data that’s been provided by Ben which why we’ve decided on this piping route rather than the typical larger sizing. I personally don’t doubt what you are saying but without actual data it’s hard to know what’s right and wrong. I’m adding this test to our list of to dos and I hope that we can find some time to do this and shoot a video on it!

@@speedacademy Hey thanks for the kind reply. For what it's worth I think you did make the right choice on the pipe size to suit your application. I guess my ptsd kicked in from early 2000's car forum debates where people used to argue this topic with some very wild claims based on seat of the pants testing. I think doing that test some day would be a fantastic idea that would make for some great content. Keep doing what you are doing, you have been smashing it lately with these projects.
