Here is a compilation video tribute to famed operatic tenor, Lawrence Brownlee, singing some of opera’s greatest bel canto repertoire. Donizetti, Rossini, and more. Fantastic orchestras accompany Larry on some of the most infamous stages in the world. Here lies one of the best performers of our times, and many of these from his younger years. He’s just as good now, and lovely as ever both to visit with and to watch perform the magic of his craft!

He is my favorite tenor! Many people label him as a high note specialist. Totally wrong. He is a complete singer with perfect technique, feeling, support, voice purity and clarity

Certainly the best of all voices. Totally confident, and not afraid to make mistakes. He has a full open throat alla Corelli and his excellent breath control with an outstanding top is similar to Bjorling. His theory of folding a note and turning it like a wheel without a break in the voice controlling it from top to bottom is incredibly difficult. Thank you.

Just Björling? Jussi had a light tenor like Alfredo Kraus (my personal favourite). I'm a big fan of Lawrence's voice and his acting ability, too.

Maestro Brownlee is a wonderful and accurate singer. His pronunciation is perfect unlike a few Anglophone singers. Bravo, bravissimo! 👏 🎶 🎼

Entendre..... Pearl Fischers. The best I have ever heard this aria. His connection through the passagio and to his upper notes is just as clearly connected. Most tenors find themselves in a coloratura range that is just to much of a challenge so they revert to a falsetto that breaks up the continuity of the aria. Larry's is just amazingly consistent with rest of the gorgeous sound. Bravo!!!!!

He has definitely improved. A few years ago when he first began to be famous he had a flutter which you could hear occasionally. Now his voice is all of a piece A really solid voice now. If you listen to the early Lauri-Volpi records he had had a even worse flutter but by 1926 he had straightened it out. If you don't sing wrong and ruin your voice, with practice, you get better. By the way, I too had a High F. But being a bass it was an octave lower. I sang with a black studio. My first paid performance was singing negro spirituals. We had a guy who looked like and sounded like Brownlee - maybe better. He impressed the hell out of everyone. His name was Donald Coleman. Most singers never get famous. If you're out there Donald, write back.

Not a fan of leggero tenors but this guy is incredible! Far better than JDF. If he weren’t a black man, he’d be every bit as popular as is JDF..... more so seeing as his voice is superior to JDF’s. Opera has never been kind to black men. Black females fare far better seeing as there are and have been ultra famous black female opera singers but name just ONE black tenor who made it big. Just one. I’ll wait.....

Name one black tenor who should have made it big and didn't? Lawrence Brownlee is not one of those though, even though he certainly has had a pretty decent career. I much prefer him to JDF also, but that isn't really saying alot. They are both decent tenors, but not worthy of huge notoriety. We just don't have all that many good tenors these days and they are the best of a bad situation. The reality is, being a tenor is extremely difficult no matter what your skin color and if you are good at it, you will get the praise and the work like Brownlee has. He may not have reached the hights of someone like Pavarotti, but he is no Pavarotti anyway. Regardless, there are going to be a lesser amount of successful black opera singers anyway, because the reality is that Opera and classical music are not a big part of there culture as it is for people of European decent, so they will have had less exposure to it from a young age and less aspiration to get involved in that type of music. Brownlee himself had a very little exposure to classical music growing up too but obviously that changed later on. He could very easily have gone down the path of a different genre however.

@@ssr6036 Publicly & hype gave Pavarotti his status. Brownlee could out sing Pavarotti at absolutely everything. I'm not a fan of Brownlee nor Pavarotti. Just being objective based upon the actual vocalism. Whom you prefer is simply a case of personal taste, personality, subjective appeal & emotional response. But in musical terms of range, flexibility, uniformity of tone, & vocal consistency over time, Pavarotti simply isn't in the same league at all. Though to be fair, range & flexibility is not necessarily an important component of the great voices. None of the greatest tenors could sing anywhere near as high or possessed the flexibility of Brownlee & others, including Pavarotti. Perversely, the more perfect the voice & technique, often the colder response from the public. It must be a human trait that we perceive imperfections as sounding more emotional & moving to the ear. Perhaps because it provides an easier window into the singers soul & personality
