It's finally here! the Sequel to the well received Sci-Fi story that captivated us back in 2021! Dune 2 does well to follow on from an incredible first film, but the reason I think it works SO WELL is maybe not the reason you think...
Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Writers: Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Frank Herbert
Stars: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård (Christ there's SO MANY haha)

I can get behind most of your review, except that Francesca Annis was the best Jessica...as well as each of the other cast members from 1984 being equally ideal in their casting. Naturally, I would readily agree that, e.g., the Barron and Count Glossu Rabban were acted in the 1984 production in such a way that is was difficult to take them seriously. But imagewise, they were still the best ones I have seen; script and dialogue issues notwithstanding. I would similarly review the costuming, music, scenery and cinematography. The steampunk look of the technology, especially, was better in that earlier production. And as big a fan as I am of Christopher Walken, no, I didn't get Emperor vibes from him here. But most of all is the character, Paul. True, Kyle MacLachlan didn't look 15, but he looked young enough to be a Duke's son. More importantly, Kyle played the Charisma Effect (i.e. of the very subtle sort that Frank Herbert and his son Brian were warning us about with the books) to utter perfection. Being intelligent *and* well-educated in that very danger, I *still* was entranced by Kyle's portrayal to the point I myself might just have been charmed into following *his* Maud'Dib anywhere. Not quite so much with all the other versions of his character I've seen since then, including this most recent one. Timothée Chalamet is good, yes, I do not mean to say otherwise. But Kyle's is still the best Paul Maud'Dib Atreides I've seen or heard so far. Besides, to be fair, we must remember that Timothée was born in 1995, so *he's* not authentically a 15 year old either.

This was a great movie but the bittersweet ending made me stop caring about about the main character. I had a long debate with my friends and they said it was a political move. It just felt apathetic to me.

I can understand the ending making you feel like that! which is why I’m curious how they’d take Paul moving into the next segment, as I wonder if he may make it tougher for audiences to resonate with the story? 🤔

We must remember, though, that was basically how it went in the novel. One of the things many lament about the 1984 film -- including me, and I'm a *fan* of the 1984 film -- was the syrupy-sweet ending that not only went against the book, but just generically, was not as plausible. The two realities that had to be accepted were that Paul couldn't marry Chani because of the politics (he had to marry the princess in order to ascend to the imperial throne, military victories or not), and that he would *hardly* "bring peace" until after a *lot* of deaths throughout the imperium. We get a hint of that with the response message from the Great Houses, saying they did not recognize his ascension. It's just more accurate *and* more believable.
