Here are 3 different brands of Permethrin insecticide, how much they cost, and a live demonstration on a couple of unlucky ticks. I'll show you how to mix it yourself to save money and also discuss the safety and the effect on deer hunting with scent control.

Awesome video! I’ve been using permethrin for many years now and have a tip that makes application so much easier. I spend a lot of time outdoors, going in to tick and chigger infested areas every day, so I treat virtually my entire wardrobe. I also have barn cats and don’t like to spray it outdoors (it’s only toxic to cats when in liquid form, according to what I’ve read). So to make things way easier on myself, I put a load of clothing into the washing machine, my socks pants shirts etc, fill it up with water, add an ounce or two of 10%, let the washing machine mix it up a bit, then allow the clothing to soak for half hour or so. Put it on the spin cycle then hang them out to dry. It works great, and that concentration seems to be more than effective.The only time I mix up spray it’s just a small quantity for my boots two or three times a year, or to treat the seats in my truck.

The only problem with that is the concentrated chemical going into your septic if the sewer system and eventually into ground water.

Excellent video, thank you for showing the concentration amounts. I like the cost savings you demonstrate by using the concentrate - I bought Sawyers for the ease of use. Another great video. Thank you. I used the water-based concentrate, diluted to .5%, on my turkey hunting clothes and had zero ticks bother me the entire season (hunted a lot). First time that has ever happened. We have the lone star/red meat problem in the immediate area so there is no way I'm going out with untreated clothes.

I have used the sawyers for the last 2 years. Never been worried about any scent, from what I can tell after its dry there is little if any scent. I didnt know about the other ones though, I may look into that at TSC. I tried the spray can not the bottle this last week actually when I did a bit of scouting. You get a little more for a little less $$ and I felt it covered better than the spray bottle. As far as the videos go, keep doing what you do, we all enjoy them and thats the bottom line!

They all work great. Excellent video. In my experience, the Sawyer is completely odorless after it dries on clothing and I usually mix at 0.75% and really soak the clothes well. The petroleum based works great but it has a very strong petroleum odor and leaves an oily residue on the clothing. So I don't use that anymore. I also got some clothing from Insect Shield. Increased cost but they last much much longer. Last week I was wearing a pair of insect shield socks without any other bug protection. I had 3 ticks crawling on my gloves. In every case I picked them off and placed them on my sock. Dead within a minute.

THAAAANK YOU!!! Compared to LYME DISEASE, it’s safe used properly, NOT ON THE SKIN! You can use “ off ski tactic, if u must put on skin. I started by working on keeping the deer off my property , ( urine) the tick population has gone way down over three years. Don’t wear same clothes you wore in the woods yesterday!!! Turn inside out to wash! Dry on high after you hang dry for ten minutes! I’m quarantining in a wooded house watching out for a sight impaired woman, had to learn TICK CARE IMMEDIATELY! This is the best video I’ve come across, ASSUME YOUR GOING HUNTING!!! And protect yourself against Lyme! If you get bit, go to Er or doc to get the ten day protocol! A tick just biting , low risk, but if u wake up n it’s been there overnight noting, seek medical attention... this Lyme SUUUCKS and rearranges you’re whole life! If you have Lyme, become a vegan for a year, be way on ur digestive tract, feed your body so it can fight it. And find a way, any way, to accomplish 30 minutes of cardio each morning and get some sun daily. It takes time to irraticate, and YOU must do the WORK! There’s no magic prescription. But you Can get through it by clean living. Then you can go back to your Mac Attacks and junk food, but get well first.

I didn't know about Permethrin and cats, and as a cat owner and outdoor enthusiast I can't thank you enough for that bit of info. I've used the Sawyer brand for years and I've never had a tick bite (that I've found anyway). The first time I saw Sawyer the warning label scared the tar out of me so I actually called them. The petroleum smell is the chemical they use to aerosolize the active ingredient. It aids with spraying. It does evaporate along with it's smell, along with the danger of direct skin contact with the product. Permethrin is also the active ingredient in lice shampoo at about 1% concentrate. I didn't however know about the less expensive concentrates, I'll be switching to those so thanks again!
@karlmadsen3179
@karlmadsen3179 Жыл бұрын
No. The spray nozzle aerosolizes the mix by pumping it through a small orifice and turning it into a mist of tiny droplets. That's called an aerosol. The petroleum component is the solvent. Permethrin is oil soluble, not water soluble. It is hydrophobic. That is why a little bit of surfactant (i.e. detergent) is used to make a pretty poor emulsion with the water and the concentrated permethrin. You shake the mixture. Spray it. Shake it more. Keep spraying. Once it dries and the petroleum/water mixture evaporates, the permethrin is impregnated on the clothing fibers (cotton absorbs the stuff great) and you have six weeks of protection. Use a gentle wash like Sport Wash, and don't put the clothing in the dryer. Air dry them. You'll have six weeks of tick protection on your clothing.

Was doing land survey work out in the woods in Georgia in the `70's and after I set up the instrument and was waiting on the guy up front to get in position I just happened to be looking at the ground and noticed ticks; looking around closely noticed I was completely surrounded and they were on every blade of grass and leaves and all headed my way because of chiggers I sprayed DEET on my pole climbing boots every morning to the point after a while they were saturated and noticed when those things got close they broke camp. Permethrin has been my 'go to' for just about everything for the last few yrs and works very well I even use it diluted in the house because here down South it is insect country big time.

This item works for Chiggers. I think I am a Magnet to Chiggers and I have stayed awake several nights scratching Chiggers. I have tried so many different things to prevent chigger bits and stop the itch and nothing worked. I also consulted my Dermatologist and the things she recommended did not work. So, I went to Tractor Supply and bought a 32 oz. bottle that was on sale for $16.99 and mixed it 15 to 1 oz. of water and sprayed my shoes, socks, and around my pants legs before going out to cut the grass and it stopped the chiggers. Thank you for this video. I will definitely tell everyone I come in contact with about this chemical. Thank you for this video.

Put a bit of clear nail polish on the chigger bite where it burrowed into the skin This will cut off the air to the chigger and cause it to back out of you but they will get caught and die between the skin and polish When you peel the nail polish off you will find the chigger stuck where it died attempting to burrow out through the nail polish

I use the 36.5%, few important tips. A.) If you have cats, and they get into this wet, it WILL kill them at worst, or cause horrible nuerological deficits at best. Also applies to aquatic life when wet. B.) One way to save some time and get even better coverage, buy a cheap pump sprayer, lay your stuff on your lawn or in the driveway and hose it down. Takes 1/10th the time and if you use distilled or filtered water it will stay usable all season. It may stay good with normal tap water but pymethrin bonds with contaminants and minerals and for the 50 cents a gallon I don't risk it. If you wash and dry this stuff it should be resprayed every six cycles. You can stretch it a bit by air drying but I wouldn't go past eight for maximum effectiveness. Permithrin is removed via mechnaical action, so the agitation cycle in the washer and the tumbling in the dryer does the most damage. If you hand wash you probably got double the normal life if not more. I also use 1 percent concentration just for peace of mind. Happy hunting.

The 36.8% version, Permethrin SFR, is NOT safe for use on clothing even diluted to the 0.5% used for clothing like the 10% version. The 36.8% SFR has additional active ingredient chemicals in it that are harmful to humans and can be absorbed through the skin. The 10% version does not contain these chemicals.
