This is the Best Toyota Land Cruiser You've Never Heard Of: The Land Cruiser J78 Prado. Specifically, this is the Land Cruiser KZJ78W Prado. When the 70-series Land Cruiser was introduced, Toyota split the 70-series into the "heavy duty" and "light duty" versions of the truck. The Prado (also known as the Bundera or Land Cruiser II) embodies the "light duty" ethos with a blend of off-road capability, comfort, and a more civilian-friendly design, making it a unique entry in the Land Cruiser lineage. This 1995 KZJ78W model showcases the classic rugged lines and robust build quality that Toyota is renowned for, alongside features and amenities that were quite advanced for its time.
James Reeves gives you a personal tour of his Prado, along with Japanese car expert, Aaron Ross of Bulldog Auto Japan, and they explain why the Toyota Land Cruiser J78 Prado, especially the KZJ78W model, stands as a testament to Toyota's engineering excellence and foresight into the SUV market's evolution that lives up to the revered Land Cruiser heritage.

I drove a old Land Cruiser Prado in Iraq while on deployment there. There were a ton of them there. It ran, the ac worked, and it NEVER broke down. Best of all, it allowed us to "blend in" while traveling amongst the natives.

My parents had a 2001 Land Cruiser prado when they were stationed in Africa it was our favorite car, we took it off road and through Safaris the only complaint was it was under powered.

We had two 2004 Land Cruiser diesels with manual transmissions issued to our teams while I was there 2005-2007. Those things were bullet proof, and the A/C was nice. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it would be nice owning that Land Cruiser diesel today.

Some trivia: In the original novel by Michael Crichton, Toyota Land Cruisers were used as the tour vehicles in _Jurassic Park._ While they were replaced with Ford Explorers in the movie, the game _Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis_ retains them.

You can import 70's from Australia, they have a diesel manual that's perfect and has zero infotainment or bullshit. Austalian 70 series quite literally hasn't change since they came out in 83. You can thank the mining industry there for that, pricy though since not many outside of the mining corps still buy them

You should talk to Skid Factory or something, I guarantee you could turn up the boost on that a little and it would still be dead reliable. It might even be better for it because you won't have to be going foot to the floor all the time just to keep up with traffic. If you can cut your acceleration times that means you're back to lighter throttle cruising sooner. Skid Factory can tell you what would be a safe level to go too and what you need. Aussies know their stuff.

I love this take on "The Best Land Cruiser" and why it's more about what's the best Land Cruiser for you. I have a 2006 100 series Land Cruiser that's halfway build and for me it's the perfect Land Cruiser. It can breeze through 1000 mile road trips getting to cool places, then do days to weeks off-road pounding on rocks and dirt trails, easy to camp and live out of, and even though I've put a ton of money into it. It's still cheaper than a 200 which makes me not hate myself for every scratch that gets put on it, and for a lot of what I'm actually driving most of the time, it's way more comfortable, quieter, roomier for my sleeping platform and much more powerful than an 80. I love pretty much every cruiser for what it's the best at, and there is a Cruiser for most people depending on your use and build. Pick what works for you and your budget and join the cult. It's by far the best car community I've ever been a part of.

Describing the Prado as "your wife's Land Cruiser" hits a little close to home as the owner of a North American J120, A.K.A. Lexus GX470. Incidentally, I would recommend one if your wife is looking to cruise some land. There is a decent aftermarket for bumper stickers that say shit like "it's basically a Land Cruiser" if you are considering one for yourself.

Thanks for running up the price for the rest of us! I have an FJ62 and understand the things it does less well. Of course, they can be made into one of the best vehicles on the road. Throw a 80 series frame and drivetrain, an engine swap, more comfortable seats, sound insulation, a nice center console with cup holders, upgrade lighting all round, and just a few odds and ends pretty much does it. That's assuming the paint, glass, mirrors and bumpers are functional and cosmetically acceptable. I probably don't have to mention resealing the rain gutters. But a Prado you say.....hummmm, I'll give it some thought.

In Australia, the 70 series includes the 76 wagon, the 79 dual cab ute, and the 78 troop carrier. There is also the 75 single cab ute. The modern versions have run a 4.5 litre V8 single turbo diesel, with the latest gen having the 1GD-FTD 2.8 litre 4cylinder diesel. The Prado we know in Aus is the 90, 120 and 150 series wagons, very different to your 78 'Prado'. The new generation 250 series is the new Prado for us and the Landcruiser for you guys. My daily driver is the LC200 with 4.5 litre V8 twin turbo diesel. You really haven't lived until you own a Landcruiser!
