You can cycle from Waterloo station south to the river to Chelsea in west central London more or less entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 5.2km long (3.2 miles) and makes use of Cycleway 3 and various quiet backstreets.
The journey takes under 20 minutes to ride, which is a bit quicker than the same trip by public transport. By Tube you have to change trains.

Pavillion Road, is so named as there used to be a Victorian sports club on the site (the Princes Club). Middlesex played cricket there regularly before moving to Lord's. The land was sold of for building and sport stopped sometime in the 1880s.

I wish it were possible for TFL or the Mayor to force Kensington and Chelsea to actually build cycle infrastructure. The CS3 to C9 gap down kensington high street is an absolute joke.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes Жыл бұрын
It technically is - basically the mayor can take over the road and make it a ‘red route’. But it requires the sign off of the transport Secretary. So maybe when Labour are in government…

The risk is that it juat generates more resentment toward cyclists among local residents and business owners. That's why their Tory council took down a cycle lane on Kensington High Road in 2020 only 7 weeks after they put it up, despite the fact that it was put up in response to a drive from the Tory government to promote cycle lanes. However, in reality, less than half a percent of the borough's population had complained, most businesses were closed at the time and road works were causing congestion that was preventing the impact of the cycle lane from being assessed.

On Constitution Hill alongside Buckingham Palace the continuous barrier is there because the cycle track used to be a horse riding lane. I imagine the barrier stopped horses and pedestrians coming into contact. People didn't walk up the horse route because it was made of sand, now they do because it's the same material as a pavement.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes Жыл бұрын
interesting! I know there’s a horse ride in Hyde park as well still I wonder if they have similar barriers

I know what you mean about the other side of Westminster bridge. I tried to cycle down the protected lane last Saturday afternoon. It was absolutely full of people. Even constantly ringing my bell I couldn’t make progress for people walking and standing in it. Not sure what they can do about it. In the past that lane was always blocked by pedicabs. Not sure which is worse! 😅

Nice route - I've used something similar through Lowndes Square for a while, although yours looks quieter than mine. Would love to see a route from Hyde Park to Wandsworth Bridge/Parsons Green. I think I have an ok route through Brompton Cemetery but interested to see if you can do better :)

Thanks for a new route - wasn't aware of the section leading down south out of Hyde Park to Sloan Square! Not exactly relevant to this route / video , but really hope the changes to Old Bethnal Green Road seen in one of your other videos (the kind that Chelsea and Kensington could really benefit from) dont get reversed by the current Tower Hamlets Council - would be a real great shame if they did. Love the Videos btw!

Very familiar with most of this route; it would be nice to see the rarely used road next to the cycle lane along the edge of Hyde Park be repurposed, perhaps by opening up the cycle lane or by using it for roller blading lessons and stuff like the space in front of the statue of Prince Albert.

@5:33 "pedestrians who've picked the wrong side" ... with the short daylight hours at this time of year, and the rather feeble streetlights along here (presumably to avoid causing light pollution in Buck House gardens) ... pedestrians are mostly to be found in the cycle lane at the moment ... and who can blame them!

I wondered what way you would go as south Bank to home is one I do often, the bollards by st Thomas are proper annoying. At big Ben it's always a choice along the Thames Inc the scary roundabout or thru the park. And if thru the park via Victoria which I don't actually mind! Or up constitution hill. I don't like the lights at the palace at all. And just stick to the road and I prefer just going before the traffic around the the Belgravia entrance, it's lively for 10 seconds. That crossing into the park is too fiddly for my tastes but I do go through there on the way back from the pub in Mayfair. I don't use the cycle lane, same gate and generally pop to Waitrose just on the left and then home around Sloane Square which I don't mind too much either you did good with pavilion rd it's usually BUSY and getting across Sloan's avenue x

@@Londoncycleroutes glad its not just me, its what I wanted to pay attention to when I saw you heading that way, I never know when to cycle going right, but maybe when turning left maybe not going on the cycle path means I cut across the traffic, I mostly go via victoria, its not actually too bad, the first right at victoria has two options for left, a cycle cut thru - bit tight & odd timings, so I dodge traffic on the bend & head straight to SS. All that bit feels bumpy tho... x
