I never in my life would of thought to mix potato and tofu. but the texture looks so good on this.

You could grate the potato as well. If you let the water your squeezed out of the potato sit, the potato starch would settle to the bottom. You could use that instead of adding starch to adhere the nori.

I found your channel yesterday and made this dish today. First I thought it would be really fiddly and hard to make but it was really straightforward and enjoyable. Second, reading the ingredients list I didn't think it would be very fishy but I was wrong; it had a beautiful and subtle taste. I have tried so many vegan fish recipes over the years and this one ranks right up at the top. Thankyou very much: now to try some more of your recipes.

I’m not vegan and I love this recipe! I’ll have to purée the raw potato in my petite food processor. I’ll also probably make salsas, tapenades, and other flavor bombs à la Ottolenghi to go with these. Even a simple tzatziki, yoghurt and tahini sauce, hummus, with sumac, za’atar, etc. The possibilities are endless!

did you use a parchment paper or other prepared surface to keep it from sticking? what temp/time did you bake it at.. (I could imagine prepping large squares like this, then cut w/ large-sharp knife & bake like individual bites) :)

@@davidvalenta9394 I've not made this yet, but I also would bake it (I avoid oil and the fat/calories that go along with it). I was thinking baking it on a silicone mat, which I use a lot, would do very nicely. I do use parchment at time, but I keep in mind that it is paper, which means it comes from trees, and I like to avoid that when possible. I think silicone is a good alternative and recommend it.

I am thoroughly impressed! this is one of the most creative recipes i have seen, yet so simple. Only downside I imagine is you have to eat this fresh, as it would lose texture and taste if frozen and thawed, right?

I made it yesterday and what can I say : Simply delicious !!!! my husband loved it as well . I was struggeling a bit with the tofu dough , the fofu was a bit too firm, but I think it is because I have used organic tofu made in Germany, which probbaly has another consistency than traditionally made tofu. You should use Asian style medium firm tofu. Not the tasteless very firm over compact thick heavy block of tofu sold in Organic store in the West.

That looks sooo tasty! I have to try it. One question though, why do you add water to the potatoes just to remove it later? Wouldn't it be easier to put the potato and the tofu in a blender together and just add a bit of moisture if needed?

I made this today. When I used cheesecloth to strain, I ended up with practically nothing. So I tried again and just pressed most of the liquid out gently using a wire mesh strainer. I suggest keeping the liquid until you are finished in case you need to add a bit more liquid to the mix. I also used a food processor both to mash the tofu, and to mix at the end. I had trouble frying the large piece, so instead I made smaller pieces and airfried them in my airfryer. That way I didn't need the cornflour mix - the nori seaweed stuck without it. It really does come out tasting like fried fish. Thank you!

Pan Fried Vegan Fish Steaks from HomemadeVeganIreneYong The best way to eat tofu, no need to stir-fry or stew, add 1 potato, it is as fragrant as fried fish Ingredients for the tofu/potatoe “fish” mixture: Firm Tofu 200g, patted dry and mashed with the back of your knife on a cutting board Potatoes 200g,Pureed in a blender with a bit of water Nori Seaweed 1piece approximately 8”x 8”, cut in half Salt ½ teaspoon cornstarch 1tablespoon Ingredients for the Slurry: Cornstarch 1tablespoon water 1 tablespoon -combine cornstarch and water and use it to brush on one side of the seawood to hold the potatoe mixture in place on the “skin”. For Frying: Cooking oil ½ tablespoon Sauce Ingredients: Simmer 3 minutes. Brush over “fish” after frying. Soy sauce 1½ tablespoon water 50ml Mirin ½ tablespoon ginger powder ⅛ teaspoon Syrup 1tablespoon Sugar ¼ teaspoon Pat tofu dry. Mash tofu using the back of a broad knife to smear it on a cutting board. Puree raw potatoe with water in a blender and then strain and squeeze until dry in a nutmilk bag or cheesecloth. Add potatoe and tofu together with the salt and cornstarch. Divide in half. Mix cornstarch and water and brush on one side of a 4 x 8” piece of nori. Place half of the potatoe mixture on top of one of the ½ sheets of nori and pat even into a “filet”. Press a chopstick into the mixture the long way to mimick a fishbone spine. Fry immediately with potatoe side down or nori gets soft and falls apart.Fry 3-5 minutes. Flip and fry the “skin” side 1-2 minutes.

Does it work to use vegetarian oyster sauce instead of the homemade mix? (I don't have all the ingredients for your sauce but I have Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce in a bottle. Does it need to be cooked before eating?)

khoai tây bổ vỏ, xắt nhỏ, xay với ít nước. Lọc bỏ nước. Tàu hủ trắng văt bỏ nươc, bóp nát. Hai thứ trộn lại với ít bột bắp. Phết lên miếng rong biển. Chiên với lửa vừa.
