How to learn to play Music in the best and most beneficial way.
Normally we don't have to look at my funny face; we just listen to the piano sound while the fingers take a walk on the keys. But at rare occasions I actually get up from the piano chair - so let's take a walk in the forest and have a little talk about Music. It's 5 o'clock in the morning and we have the morning choir of the singing birds as a thrilling musical background...
By the end of this lesson a fraction of a NewJazz song appears in the sky. If you are interested you can hear the entire song: • Funky 'Train' Jazz in ...

I honestly think that generations of music students would have profited vastly from teachers like you, instead of the musical drill sergeants still found today at many music academies. Thank you so much for helping to make the winds change!

I tried for decades to get into piano and never made much progress until great online teachers like Oliver came along. Now, I still have much progress to make, but I have some solid skills. The advice given here all resonates powerfully with my experience. By far the most important thing I've discovered is that you have to find things, along every step of the journey, that are satisfying. I remember learning simple triad chords, and that playing them in certain sequences triggered powerful emotions. So I played them, over and over, for hours. I was making actual music, and at the same time, building important skills. I've had many similar experiences since; one of them was learning some simple hand grips Oliver taught, and suddenly I could do some basic improvising over a jazz chord progression. Oh how many times did I play that progression!

Thanks for your inspiration. I'm playing the piano again after a 40 year break and finding all the theory overwhelming and demotivating. I never enjoyed music lessons; so formal and rigid. Nobody asked me if I enjoyed it ! But with your great videos, I feel I've got permission to just do what I want: for instance, I don't want to learn the whole of Chopin's " Raindrops " ; I'm just going to learn the first 8 bars, then I'm going to play some jazz chords ! I'm never going to be a Herbie Hancock or Billie Preston, but that's ok. I just want to enjoy music. Bless you.

This is a great video, works on many levels. I have a number of bird feeders (also enjoyed by squirrels) in my yard, and enjoy listening to the melodic tweets, whistles, and calls. When I lived in urban areas, I'd often open the windows of my apartments, and take in the cadence and collage of the city, the air brakes of the buses, jack hammers gnawing away at concrete, the chugging of the coal trains. I don't suppose I've ever spent much time practicing in the traditional sense. Just how I approach music.

"When having a strong motivation, music is no longer a struggle. You simply forget time and space". As an average guitarist and drummer, I can heavily relate with what you said by playing the musics that I love. I am 26 years old this year. You motivated me to start learning piano or keyboards, as well as more theory about jazz music even though I am somewhat late on learning it. Thank you and Peace

Just in time ! I have started piano and music since 18 months. After trying to go through multiple piano methods I just decided 2 month ago to do what I did when I was young for reading : diving in the books of an author. So now I am diving in Erik Satie music and you know what ? I am happy 😊. You are just so Good !

I started playing six months ago as a lockdown hobby. Erik Satie is the reason I didn't give up at the beginning struggle. I now play Gnossiennes 1-3 (and pretty well for a newbie) thanks to him and Reinbert De Leeuw. :)

So true. I'm new and started a udemy course on piano, lost interest after 4 videos- just wasn't what I came to the piano for. I wanted to hear boogie woogie and my favorite anime songs. Playing those two things is the only reason I've been able to sit down and practice every single day since starting to play six months ago. Always find myself looking forward to what sounds tomorrow will bring, and I'm relieved to hear that this approach is held in high regard!

Ive been playing guitar for about a year now, and I've decided I want to make my own electric guitar covers of songs (by singing the vocals with my guitar, inspired by Kfir Ochaion) and not too long ago I decided to start learning piano because I thought that it would really open the way to music theory very easily, since the piano displays notes in a much more preferable manner, and more connected. And you really help a lot with the music theory (especially the videos on Scales, seriously opened my eyes, my jaw dropped when I saw things connect) and also other tutorials, so I want to sincerely thank you for this golden content that you post free of charge.. this is top notch advice that you wouldnt get in many places, certainly not for free!

One thing that I found useful to me when I learning a new piece, is be able to take just one bar, or even half bar, and playing in loop until start grooving like a Massive Attack song. Kinda when you were a child and repeat a sentence so much that start losing the meaning. But on the contrary, far of losing the musical meaning, is like watch it something you know on a new light. Thanks for sharing Oliver, best regards to you too.

to approach music , there is so much to do! i can make a piano piece , a generic pop and so much more. sometimes i spend 6 or more hours making songs and rythms , drum patterns and melody loops to replicate a feeling , to record it. the fun part is that music is so big and complicated it becomes simplified by souls like newjazz , souls who teach how to stay on track and dont overthink , make music on your own pace.
