Leave a comment with how you organize your vinyl record collection AND/OR your favorite record/box set that I showed off in this video.
I've touched on this in room tours, but this time I'm going DEEP into the shelves, row by row, box by box, to explain how I organize my records. I hope you enjoy this look into my collection as much as I did filming it!

@@WhiskeyandDonuts I agree. Alphabetical is easiest. I don't have to think about genre (which can be arbitrary) when it comes to genre. For example, I'm a huge Prince fan, and he's had albums that defy genre. Same with Joni Mitchell. She stated out folky and then evolved to more jazz stylings. I don't own any Linda Ronstadt on vinyl, but her albums covered quite a range of styles in her career. My albums all fall into a single genre: "Music I like".

I think an approach like yours really works if you’re the only person flipping records on a daily basis. At home my wife also digs records from the shelves. To make it simple we go a-z, soundtracks on a separate box and same gif box sets. Some day we’ll unify the criteria I think 😂 Great video

Great organization! I believe there is no right or wrong way of organizing as it is a very individual way of classifying the records in each collector's mind. Like what you said, organizing the records is to help you find the record when you wanted to give it a spin so as long as it works for the collector, it is perfect! 😊

Nice. An important thing to know on those IKEA shelves- they need to be set up the way you have them, the “short way.” When they are standing up the “tall way,” major collection-altering accidents have occurred. Also, they apparently do better when some plywood or other structural backing is added.

Sweet room tour Matt! My organisation of around 100 records is quite simple for now...so: Low 1st row on the left is game soundtracks, rock and soviet classics. Low 2nd row on the right goes straight Monster Rally (tropic-hop) discography. Low 3rd row on the right is synthwave, electronic, experimental, indie rock. And the high 4th biggest row is vaporwave section sorted by cover coloration and artists affilation. Dont own any kallax-like furniture and..it holds on cardboards... wish i could build something custom to fit it nearby my tv with players and game consoles...hopes can fix it better in a future...because i have to locate my turntable barely over the speaker...im serious :D

As far as organization I basically do an all encompassing Metal section and then any kind of rock that i consider less then metal. Third is country/rap/classical. And finally all my box sets. Each section is alphabetical order obviously.

I may have to do that on one of these quarantine days. I have probably in the region of 1500 records now and organize A-Z by genre with the my most prized/loved records in the living room. I have a backlog problem too that is even worse than yours.

At one point I tried the genre organization but found that since some artists are hard to pin point a style I gave up on that and just went alphabetical. My collection is not as large as yours so it isn’t a big deal for me. I have the ikea shelving just like you. One thing I did with my shelving was nail and glue a small piece of corner trim (L shaped) at the back of each bin to act as stopper. I see you put the clear sleeve protectors on your records. I was wondering if I should continue with doing that. I now realize I will. Cool and helpful videos. Thanks.

I use the chaos method for organizing my records. So when I am flipping through my bins, it feels like I am going to discover a gem that I forgot I had. #lazy
@jody8526937
@jody8526937 3 жыл бұрын
I did the “chaos” system for most of my life. It was a great way to rediscover gems as you pointed out. I used to always get complaints from friends who “couldn’t find anything they wanted”. When the amount of records climbed to a few thousand I realized I needed to sort thing differently so I switched to a decades system. First release date was thereby your genre. For instance James Brown is 50’s, U2 are70”s. That worked for a while but it was also a point of contention for visitors and friends who generally seem to prefer genre based classifications. Now after 6,000+ recordings I am moving to a decades, alphabetically arranged system. A few genres like classical and film soundtracks. Jazz is a category with decade and alphabetical arrangement. I have 4,000 cds that are in chaos. One day I hope to arrange alphabetically by decades with box sets standing alone. I’m not sure how I should arrange the DVD’s and VHS music collection?

I organize my collection in a couple of different ways. I have sections for soundtracks, rap/hiphop, alt. rock/metal, 80's/pop & electronic. With the exception of soundtracks and elecronic, the other sections are organized typically by artist. If an artist has mutiple releases, those are placed in order of release. Soundtracks are organized by music label. Within the label, they are sorted by catalogue number. The bulk of my collection consist of electronic music. I organize these records by music label (# - Z). Much like the soundtracks, they are further organized by catalogue number. I also use divider to separate each section of my entire collection.

When you have more than 5,000 and listen to every type of recorded music genre sorting is stifling and a bit narrow as you grow older. Eventually, if your collection and you taste develop you will convert to a alphabetical or decades storage system with few concessions to genre.

Been trying to fight against this lol. I need to store my 7" collection, but getting started is overwhelming. 50's, 60's, 80's pop, 90's, and 00's are all labels that are happening. Hopefully the rest will be by genre.. Like 80's new wave, synth pop, and freestyle might have their own sections. Disco, classic rock, punk, metal, ect. But theres too many artists i don't know where to put like Bowie, Eno, Prince, Blondie, so many others 😶

I’d add a tip that if you’re buying the bookshelves, get them in 4x4 cubes and add to it. They’re easier to move and the top and bottoms add stability to the shelves so they don’t bend with the weight of the vinyl.

Hi: Your saving grace was when you pulled out Joni Mitchell's "Hejira"!!!! Sorry, just teasing...I think it's great that you keep your records in such good condition and in a way you can find what you want when you want it. Unfortunately, this 65 year old has no idea about the most of what you speak about or recommend. Though I am pleased to see the earnestness you have for your collection. Getting old and out of touch is something we all have to bear at some time in our lives. Great videos though.

I can see separating by genre if you have a large library. (500+ records, or anything needing more than a single 2X4 Kallax shelf). But for any collection with fewer records than that, normal alphabetical is normal for the best IMO I sort by alphabetical, but I do have Soundtracks separate at the end of my collection. I also sort solo albums with their associated bands if applicable (David Gilmour with Pink Floyd, Steven Wilson with Porcupine Tree, Peter Gabriel with Genesis…etc)

I organize my LPs alphabetically regardless of genre. Then I go blindly to any cube and pull out the contents. Then I choose a select few that I want to listen to. I organize my CDs by broad genre, and then within each genre, organization is alphabetical. I found your video very interesting since I have very few of your genres represented in my collection. That means there is a lot of music out there I have not heard despite the fact I have over 6,000 LPs collected over 35 years. That inspires me to try out new music of different genres.

Possibilities of sorting: For smaller collections * by year * alphabetical by artist * main genre (House, Disco, Hip Hop, Techno) Broader collections: * by sub-genre * by sub-genre separated by 5-year time periods. Larger collections: * any sorting twice: 1 for favorites and 1 for collecting/deeper dive. I now prefer BPM segments per favorites main genre as I like to DJ. For Boogie Disco era (73-84) I have: Classic Boogie Disco separated per 5 BPM increase. Next to that there is HI-NRG, Italo,Garage,Love Boat and Alternative Disco as separated blocks. For 90’s I have Classic House (including Garage/Euro/club/House Disco) separated per 5 BPM which also takes care of sub genres. The rest is smaller therefore sorted by sub genre. Sorting is for easy finding stuff.

A-Z by last name, but I keep a separate shelf apart from the collection (a 4X4 expedite) that is for all the rollover stuff: kids records, comedy albums, picture discs, 10" albums, soundtracks -which are sorted by the decade of the films' release, compilations -I did not notice any within your collection, there are so many amazing ones out there! A "killer" punk one I'd suggest if you have any love for that genre of music is the "Fat Music for Fat People" comp; it was the first put out by Fat Wreck Chords many years ago and still holds up very well. Also on that shelf, I have all my box sets, world music -separated by region, classical music pre-2000 (new stuff goes out with the A-Z) and then Christmas which is split into classic and modern subsections. It's a labor of love sorting these things, often I find I get almost as much enjoyment out of the process as spinning the albums; it is a zen thing for me. For your genre separating, I get that, I do it with my 45 collection (I have at least 2,000 because my wife and I have a jukebox player that we regularly reset) and they would just be impossible to manage alphabetically, I have 12 large boxes *each holds 250 [I think] 7" records, and I have them labeled accordingly: classic rock, pop, vocalists, country, R&B w/Soul, modern, holiday, and a special Yacht Rock collection :) I am inspired by your video here though, and perhaps will make a video look. We keep dividers up for the pets as well here at home...essential! Thanks for the cool video.

have only about 400 LPs, and have been ordering chronologically, by original release date...BY DECADE actually, and THEN CHRONOLOGICALLY, though I don't sweat it if I'm off a tad... but I'm pretty good at dates. However, I do separate my jazz. Currently that's not ordered well (67 in all) but that's because I just got into jazz about 3-4 years ago and can't nuance the years. Blues, R&B, and the like, also has its own section. Classical too, not ordered (only 16 in all)...For folks like Van Morrison, who spans decades, I have him in the 60's but include his: 'You're Driving Me Crazy' (a 2018 release) with his 60's output, since that's when he became popular. Same with Paul Simon and Simon and Garfunkle, etc...Idk...it may get unwieldy as time goes on but so far it seems to work.

A-Z for me (apart from jazz), but that comes from years of working in an OG record store. (in that store, we only separated out country/world/soundtracks/classical/jazz, the rest was all filed under r-n-b/rap/rock. The way you've broken down the genres probably works better in that small space. I've also trimmed down the amount of records a bit, in search of the what i listen to the most collection, knowing it's easier to add than to take away. (still well over 1,500 records) There's also a joke about the all killer and no filler mantra being mentioned along side a genre like vaporwave.

Regarding racks, I've had decent luck with the Target Threshold versions,(although they've changed over the years for the worse) and it's typically free shipping with them , prices are about what IKEA offers. I Don't know why all these cube companies are no longer including backs to strengthen the racks from accordioning. In the old days the came with a stiff fiberboard back. Also regarding esthetics, I've seen a few people place one jacket front forward in each cube (one for A, one for b) rather than have the edge of the jacket showing you get the artwork from some artist. It reminds you "Oh yeah , that's the A cube or the C cubes etc and it almost looks like art.

Great video! I have my records organized into groups of albums with singing and albums without singing and sorted alphabetically. After watching this it may work better for me to arrange them by genre.

I started collecting records in the 1960s ad have 30 linear feet. If I used the complex storage approach of this video I wouldn't be able to find them. Especially now that I need reading glasses to read the album cover edge. My recommended approach is all records get divided into 5 categories: rock, jazz, blues, country, and classical. I don't have any classical so I only have four categories. The records are then alphabetized within each group. Anything that isn't jazz, blues, or country, like R&B and rap, go under rock.

It will happen quicker than you think! Did for me anyway, I initially felt like it wasn’t even worth the money for a dedicated vinyl shelf at all. Within 2 months I was like yeah, I need a Kallax at this point. Haha. Now my 2x4 with 8 cubes is just about full. Happened so incredibly fast. Ready for another kallax soon. Not sure which size yet.

Nicely done! Def more organized than myself. Once you hit 1k records, any organization change is a huge under taking. My is pretty well alphabetized but it’s far from perfect.

Definitely saw Gigi Masin - "Wind" at 8:42. Nice one. I completely understand keeping an ambient library at < 50 records. Although certainly my favorite genre to listen to, many artists in that realm seem to struggle in separating themselves from their contemporaries and influences.

This may seem chaotic to some, but I think left to right. First, size: 12", Boxsets, 10", 7", Cassettes. Band by alphabetical order A-Z. Within an Artist, chronological order. My mind is generally able to find something really fast. I would say the only downside is what happens when I get lots of new records, it involves a lot of moving things back and forth that I don't quite like.

Thank you for the entertaining video but I agree with some of the replies - too many genres just confuse me. I organize mine from A-Z by last name (including soundtracks) and within each artist it's in chronological order. The only separate genres I have are jazz and Isreali albums.

I have a hard time breaking down so much music by genre, so my categories are 1) classical, 2) jazz, 3) jazz vocalists, 4) compilations/soundtracks, and 5) everything else. I’m up to about 2,800 records, so strict alphabetizing is key. It’s also crucial, for me at least, to have everything on Discogs.

I have about 3000 records and they are all sorted roughly within genre and than associatively... Like U2 next to Eno (because he produced them) next to Talking Heads (whom he also produced) next to B52s (where one of the eps was produces by Byrne) and so on... Needless to say I am the only one who ever finds anything in there haha

I have my records basically separated A-Z. then scores, soundtracks, musicals are kept separate also alphabetical (I find a big difference between a score and a soundtrack, and of course musicals are their own beast. Then I have international section, separated by country (waiting on my carved custom dividers for countries). My 10 inch and weird shapes, are kept in a vintage metal box, alll my DJ 12 inch singles are kept in crates like a DJ would. I bought a 7 in and 45 inch cardboard box on amazon for 14 dollars, I’ve decorated it with stickers from the front of vinyls or from various artists I had. I collect unique shaped records, I have around 25 of them right now,

I organize a bit strange: Genre, date, & artist as a whole. It allows for an organic growth of my record collection. Each genre flows into another also which is nice when I want something that doesnt quite fit one or another genre exactly.

Great video, was cool to see your collection like that. I order mine with 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s in one cube, and then I have a couple of cubes of 90s - modern day. At the moment, I don't have so many records that I feel the need to split them into genres otherwise the cubes would all look a little lacking. I have one cube of backlog. I thought I had a problem with back log...seeing yours makes me feel a whole lot less guilty for having so many records to listen to properly. I have been making the most of lockdown and listening to one album only from my backlog every evening for a week to give it a good spin before moving it into my collection. Also, just recently got into El Ten Eleven. What do you think of Tautology I?

I organise my vinyl by Decade, 50’s all the way to 2020’s, then in each decade it’s organised alphabetically by artist. I feel like if I do genre it starts to get confusing with the blending of different genres and sub genres
