Up next in my series on the best way to teach sight words: WHAT. In this video, I'll break down how to teach a sight word by highlighting the part of the word your little one already knows and teaching the part they don't know.

That's interesting to watch because my native language (German) is mostly phonetic. I didn't know about the concept of 'sight words' before I found your channel. And honestly, English seems like a pretty difficult language.

English seems to have more exceptions than other languages tend to have. Plus, we have a lot of words adopted from other languages as well. As an American, maybe this is why many of us think learning other languages will be more challenging than they might be due to our experience learning our native language.

This is SO helpful! Thank you for these videos and for you showing how you would teach a child in person. How would you teach a word like "are?"

how would you explain to the kids why sounds changes like u instead of a?.

We tell kids that even though MOST of the time a says /a/ or /ā/, this word is tricky because it makes the /u/ sound. You want to acknowledge their previous learning so they don't get confused later on.

This was great. I always tell my kiddos that a particular word is one that just doesn’t follow the rules. They think it’s funny. We play around with what it reads as like WAZ then go over what it sounds out as with the UH sound instead.

Thank you for your instructions , but you're assuming that your students are native English speakers so they can understand your explanations . I'm an ESL teacher teaching two to fours YO kids therefore it's not gonna work like this . I guess the only way for me is to introduce sight words as if they're a single sound and do not separate them and explain each letters . And introducing wh--words at once also is helpful I guess cuz they'll discover that it's a pattern .
