I genuinely think if the Thrashers had stable ownership, they would've stayed put. That 2007 team could've gotten even better if ownership had let them spend to build up the depth.

How come they don't support tthe ECHL team now? 41.3% capacity? How come hockey registration in Georgia is 0.02% (2020-2021) How come they Atlanta Flames (1972-1980) ALSO failed???? How come no NHL players are from Georgia? If Atlanta/Georgia is a hockey market, where are all the fans and players??? You had 2 teams, for 20 years.... Where are the fans? Nobody plays hockey.... Almost like Atlanta is a terrible hockey market.

oh 100%! the Atlanta can work no question, it's just too big to ignore and it makes sense on why the NHL is open to going back there according to rumors and what Bill Daly has said recently! I sure Atlanta gets another team in the coming years since it does sound like it! with the rumors of an ownership interested in bringing a team back and the suburbs of Atlanta planning to build an NHL Size area, its steps in the right direction!

The Atlanta faithful really got screwed over by bad ownership. People think Atlanta can't support NHL hockey and that simply isn't true. The city has a lot going for it and the fact that they lost two teams is disappointing.

Atlanta Thrashers attendances: 2011 - 28th/30 teams in NHL attendance (13,469) 2010 - 28th/30 teams in NHL attendance (13,607) 2009 - 29th/30 teams in NHL attendance (14,626) 2008 - 22nd/30 teams in NHL attendance (15,831) 2007 - 21st/30 teams in NHL attendance (16,240) 2007 was the second best year for Atlanta, it was good enough for 21st in the NHL...out of 30 teams.... The best season was the first for attendance, then it went downhill after the first year. "Bad Ownership" "Bad Ownership" "Bad Ownership" "Bad Ownership" "Bad Ownership" That's why 5.5 million people in the greater Atlanta area couldn't get in their cars and buy season tickets. Ownership. That's why they lost 26 million a year....ownership was preventing fans from buying tickets, and jerseys, and merchandise, and coming into games and buying tickets. Ownership would put road blocks up on game days so fans couldn't drive to the arena. It wasn't that Atlanta a city with 5.5 million people, has no hockey culture, and therefore couldn't average more than 14 thousand people per game. Give your head a shake. The ownership was bad. Also the fans were ABSENT. Nonexistent. Two things can be true. Ownership didn't exist in a vacuum, they had no fans to support them! Millions of people not going to games! It was the worst franchise in the history of the NHL, and you want to fail a third time? Never Atlanta. #NeverAtlanta

Don Waddell was the worst excuse for a GM ever. He passed on players early on who could have laid a good foundation for the future, and instead chose guys who stayed on the DL more than they did on the ice (they chose Damian Rhodes over Ron Hextall, and ended up playing “musical goaltenders” for three or four years).
@PenguinNote67
@PenguinNote67 7 ай бұрын
But how much of that was Atlanta Spirit not paying attention to what Waddell was doing?
@iplayfhorn
@iplayfhorn 7 ай бұрын
@@PenguinNote67 Waddell was lousy from the get-go, even before AS took the reins. There were several players he passed over in the expansion draft (such as the aforementioned Ron Hextall), who could have formed a strong base on which to build. I think everyone was scratching their heads over it. The new owners were content to let the Thrashers die on the vine while they were fighting over the Hawks. The real drop in attendance came after they pretty much admitted that they deliberately treated the Thrashers like the red-haired stepchild, and had been trying to dump them for years.

Reasons why Atlanta is the worst hockey market: - Atlanta Thrashers relocated (2011) - Atlanta Flames relocated (1980) - Hockey enrollment in Georgia is 0.02% (2021-2022) - 1 out of every 500 people plays hockey - Hockey in Atlanta did not grow the game, there are NO NHL players from Georgia currently (6.1 million people and not one NHL player, they had an NHL team for 19 years and have ZERO players to show for it) - by comparison Nova Scotia has a population of 969,383 people and has 26 NHL players this season, because that is a real hockey market . - Atlanta Hawks struggle with attendance (18th out of 30 teams) and basketball is more popular than hockey in Atlanta hahaha - The Atlanta Thrashers and Flames attendances were BAD....do not let anyone lie to you and tell you otherwise 2011 - 28th/30 teams in NHL attendance (13,469) 2010 - 28th/30 teams in NHL attendance (13,607) 2009 - 29th/30 teams in NHL attendance (14,626) 2008 - 22nd/30 teams in NHL attendance (15,831) 2007 - 21st/30 teams in NHL attendance (16,240) The inaugural season was the best attended season, it is NEVER a good sign when your first year is the most successful. 2007 was the Thrashers SECOND best season ever in attendance with a truly pathetic 16,240....and only good enough for 21st in the NHL that year. 2007 was also Atlanta's most successful year losing in the Eastern Conference Quarter Finals. So Atlanta Thrashers BEST attended season (16,240) would be 26th in today's NHL...and was only good enough for 21st in the NHL in 2007. Nothing about Atlanta says "success story" - Atlanta Gladiators average 4,696 per game in the ECHL (Gas South Arena capacity is 11,355 for hockey) so they can't even average 50% capacity - 41.3%. - Atlanta's ONLY benefit is the population size (6.1 million in 2020). But by that metric Houston (7.1 million in 2020) is a better option, and hasn't already failed twice before." - Atlanta Thrashers Valuations: 2010 - Atlanta Thrashers - $135 million (5.5 million population) second lowest value in NHL ......then they moved to Winnipeg.... 2011 - Winnipeg Jets - $164 million (731,000 population) - gained $30 million USD in one season 2012 - Winnipeg Jets $200 million (741,000 population) - gained another $35 million USD in the second season So....a city with only 700 thousand people, spending Canadian currency did FAR better than the failing pathetic Atlanta Thrashers ever did. According to "Forbes Business of Hockey". Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg - a city with 5 million less people, a city paying for games in Canadian currency and the team still increased by 50% valuation over a two year span. Atlanta is a basketball city, that doesn't even support the Hawks. Never Atlanta. #NeverAtlanta

@@drayiii980 And ignoring the Flames moving only tells a fraction of how they actually failed. $26 million a year in lost revenue From 2005 to 2010 130 million in loses for a team valued at only 135 million Everybody knows the Atlanta Spirit group put up road blocks to prevent fans from attending games, and then smashed ATM's in the city so no Thrashers fan could buy merchandise. Everybody knows that's why the Flames (1972-1980) and the Thrashers (1999-2010) bled money. It was the ATM smashing. Everybody knows Atlanta Spirit would not sell jerseys to fans. It was all their fault! It was 100% Atlanta Spirit's fault, and 0% on the lack of hockey fans in Atlanta 0.02% hockey registration - 1 out of 500 people has nothing to do with it, and 0 NHL players from the state of Georgia...in 19 years of having a NHL team....and 0 growth has nothing to do with the lack of fans.
