general INFO: In August 2015 I rode my bruised Honda CB500 off into Italy. To follow my holy quest of real-world-meeting potentially awesome people whom I know through my Schaaf Social Media pages. The folks I've met were all brilliant by the way.
I obviously tried to capture some RAW videos for you guys while I was there. Unfortunately my bike was not at a 100%. The Little Honda was safe to ride but I simply couldn't afford to repair all the broken bits before I took off. So while riding I had to get used to the following issues:
Steering head bearing age-worn - causing slight issues while slow riding (will replace next season)
Front brake caliper age-worn - I only had about 50% of the bike's usual brake force at disposal (will replace next season)
Rear wheel bearing busted - causing the bike to unexpectedly keep its lean/riding direction while going through slower corners. While riding I thought all the steering issues came from the head bearing. After the trip I discovered the completely dissolved middle bearing of the rear wheel while disassembling the rear wheel in order to change the bike's chain. I had no idea my bike was constantly grinding up the bearing parts inside the back wheel while riding. I thought the metallic clanging noise came from the chain
Stuck chain links - I replaced chain and sprockets after the trip
Broken chain guard / swing arm protection - the thick rubber piece to guide the chain over the bike's swing arm fell apart. Causing the chain to hit the metal swing arm. Which quickly sent the chain into Nirvana.
Adjusting screw for the clutch lever broke - Resulting in me not being able to adjust the clutch's friction point. I had to get used to a completely new friction/biting point which made exact rev-matching while down shifting a lot harder.
Luckily with time I got used to most of the issues and I could almost ride as fast as I wished to. Not quite at this point of the trip yet but you'll see a quicker pace in the later videos.

specific INFO: Welcome to early August 2015. This is me riding down the south-western side of Stelvio. It's much nicer to ride than the iconic north-eastern part of the pass. Some people describe Stelvio pass as the best driving road in the world. Which is complete bullshit. I myself haven't been on a lot of mountain passes but even I've seen a lot of roads which were way more fun to ride than Stelvio. But in my opinion the mountain views you'll get on Stelvio road are simply breathtaking and probably one of the most impressive ones in the whole of the Alps. No wonder there's a lot of traffic going on. The scenery is mind-blowing. In my opinion even the mountainous paradise of Austria - my homecountry - doesn't offer views quite as spectacular as the ones you'll get on the iconic Stelvio pass.

Riding looked spot on to me. I did this in late September. Did about 12 hours or more that day. Julier pass, St Moritz, Umbrial, both sides of the Stelvio. was going to try and get over to Como before going back to Laax, but traffic in Italy got the better me. Ended up doing the Splugen back into Switzerland. came down the Swiss side in total darkness. Awesome! thanks for sharing your video.

Everytime I watch your videos my hands get sweaty and the need to ride gets stronger. But sadly as a north german I have to ride +200km to get the first real mountains with hairpins. Nevertheless you make awesome videos and are an great rider. Stay in the saddle and DlzG

I've read the description (so my comment won't be ignored 😉). I'm not surprised by your opinion about the Stelvio pass: when people say something is the best in the world, it's usually overrated... Anyway, it's still an amazing road, with fabulous mountain views, specially at the end. So I wish to ride there one day. Thank you for this great video, Schaaf! Haven't been to Stelvio but it's something I definitely want to do. The description is very true, some of the best riding roads I've been on have no real fame, like some other roads have. As always, great share Schaaf!

Oh how I wish I lived in Europe sometimes. It's moments like these that make me wish this was not on the other side of the world from me. Absolutely stunning scenery. I'd be one of the slower bikes that you passed just soaking it all up. I had no idea that there were two routes over this pass. I thought there was only one Stelvio Pass! There is definitely less traffic on this one on this particular day though than what I have seen on the other one.

+MrAusAdventure I know, and so short between Italian Alps, and Switzerland, and Austria and Germany and ..... And more roads on each set of mountains too. There's only a couple of ways across the Victorian Alps or the Blue Mtns.

+Bikesbabesbytes Plus the roads look nice an smooth in European videos too. Much better than the potholed wonders we put up with here. But on a positive note, at least we can ride year round in most of Australia.

+MrAusAdventure I guess we are living in rider's paradise here. Not only because of the scenery also cause of the way the police handles speeding in most countries. Sometimes I'm amazed to see that it's usually no problem at all to get carried away a bit on these mountain passes. From the videos I saw coming from down-under it looks like Police is working way more eagerly against speeding. But I shouldn't try to judge from only watching videos ;)

+MrAusAdventure yea that's a definite drawback here. Our season usually lasts from April to mid-October. Although all the "good riding" takes place in between June and September. Speaking of road surfaces. The best thing about Italy is the tarmac they use for their roads. Their roads are often extremely bumpy and beat up as well but they always use an extremely rough mixture which provides basically endless grip. I always have to watch my ass (= the bike's back wheel) very carefully when I get back to Austria because most of our roads are covered in tarmac which is a lot smoother but also provides a lot less grip

Sieht nach viel Spaß aus, ich hoffe die Bremse wird bald repariert. PS: Die Art wie du fährst und auch diese rücksichtsvolle Fahrweise gegenüber anderen die auf dem Pass fahren finde ich sehr beeindruckend!

+HermanTheGerman jo, vor dem nächsten Saisonstart wird geschraubt. Und danke! Manche meinen, mein Fahrstil wär rücksichtslos. Und manchmal habe ich auch Probleme, meine "jugendliche" Ungeduld beim Überholen in den Griff zu kriegen. Aber die meisten Leute, die meine Manöver als "knapp" oder "riskant" bezeichnen, die tun das vor allem deswegen, weil sie selber NULL Gespür für's Motorrad fahren haben... Und diejenigen, die erkennen, dass bei solchen Fahrten tatsächlich noch einiges an Rücksichtnahme von meiner Seite kommt, das sind mir die liebsten. Den die verstehen ganz genau, was mit einem Motorrad möglich ist und was nicht, wenn man erst einmal die Angst (ABER NICHT DEN RESPEKT!) abgeworfen hat und ganz entspannt auf dem Ding oben sitzt. :)

Nice to see the lower bits of the south-western side, when I rode over Stelvio in late August I took the Umbrail into Switzerland. The Umbrail pass was very nice to ride, very smooth road with way less traffic than Stelvio.Looking Forward for part 2 :)

It looks fun riding your bike. When I am older I will get a "little" 2 cylinder bike again for the road. A 600 is too much for the road if you wanna ride it properly. By the way, beautiful landscape and nice riding. Always a pleasure to watch =)

Well considering all of the problems with the little Honda you have nothing to worry about, i loved it. This is one road i would have to ride twice, once for the ride and once for the views. I personally prefer a road with a mixture of long fast bends mixed in with short sections of small flips from side to side left and right etc. Ride safe and keep it shiny side up.

But due to the problems I had with my swingarm-protection before I got to Stelvio I was running late to get to my destination for the weekend in Italy :/

Tipp: Die richtig schöne "Seite" ist eigentlich der Umbrailpass. Musst du nur in die Schwezi fahren. Ist halt ne Frage der Strecke. Der Umbrail ist mittlerweile komplett asphaltiert und vom Straßenzustand mit Abstand der schönste Teil zum Fahren. Landschaft und Sicht hast du auf den anderen beiden Seiten allerdings deutlich mehr. Ich war Ende Juli 2015 oben und bin gleich jede Seite rauf und runter gefahren, weil es so geil zu fahren ist.

Hi Schaaf! Bigger bikes faster in the straight sections, but they can't beat you in the corners. Your handling is much more closer to your bikes limit than others :-) That"s what I like in your videos!

It was the British motoring show Top Gear, who "discovered" the Stelvio Pass in 2007 and called it "best driving road in the World". Although in all fairness thats actually not quite, what they said. It was "the cherry for their cake". What they ACTUALLY called "best driving road in the world" was the entire section from Davos in Schweizerland to the Stelvio Pass. Which take you over the Fluela Pass in Schweizerland, though a tunnel into the duty free ski resort Livigno and then over the Passo di Foscagno to Bormio, before you get to the Stelvio Pass. Anyway it seems a lot of people have taken the statement of these TV-presenters much to literally. Of course there is no particular "best road in the world". Its an entertainment show ok? And a few years later they found a road in Romania, which was then "the best road in the world". Whatever. The truth is, that the northeastern side of the Stelvio with its 50 or so hairpins is mostly a section of road, that just needs to be overcome. Its not much fun to drive with its narrow hairpin corners. And the views are not very good also, partly because of its concrete walls. The section towards Bormio is much more open and much nicer. But for natural beauty even that can not compete with the nearby Gavia Pass, which is only a 100 or so meters lower than the Stelvio and an absolute stunner. I was lucky enough to go to the region around Bormio in 2000 and again in 2003 before all this Top gear hype began. At that time the Stelvio national park, which is what I came for, was a bit of an undiscovered gem between the much more turisted Dolomites to the east and Val´d Aosta to the west. But supposedly this has changed now, which is a bit of a shame actually.

+fundiver198 I've been to this region ever since I was a child. I wouldn't agree with Top Gear creating a hype. There were always so many tourists with cars, bikes, and motorhomes driving around on the mountain passes. Even in the mid-90s. And I also think that the views (especially because of the magnificent Ortler) on the northeastern side are truly spectacular. And those sharp hairpin corners are actually a lot of fun to ride because they require quite a bit of skill in my opinion. Depends on the bike as well of course. But this just proves the point you were saying that there is no particular best road in the world. Everyone has to decide for him/herself. Even I've seen countless roads which were more fun to ride than Stelvio, no matter which side. I also enjoyed Gavia for instance a lot more though. Because like you are saying it's a much better place for enjoying the Alpine nature.

+Theedappa one lane wide and extreme drops to the side? Cause that's what Gavia looks like :) The Black Forest is proper sportsbike territory :) But as long as you know the right riding techniques on a sportsbike you basically never have an excuse to go slower than anybody else ;)

Stelvio is good but I prefer the Val D'Isere to Col De Bonette roads in France. I've only been over a few times. hopefully get over again next year.

Your videos are nice. Seen a couple of your Stelvio videos and we'll they are quite informative. Also, that little Honda sounds quite nice IMO. I am planning to driving down from Innsbruck to como in June. Anything I should be knowing ? ... Speed cameras, traffic, tolls, dangers etc ? Thanks for the help in advance.

+Bhuvan Chowdhary you'll always have to watch for speed cameras but in Italy they are usually clearly marked and visible. Watch out and ride as if everyone was actively trying to kill you, no joke. Cause then you'll be safe :)

+Bhuvan Chowdhary summer is always busy. Yes there's slightly more traffic on the weekend but you'll have lots of it Monday to Friday as well so I wouldn't think too much about that.

Granted wide-angle can make it seem like you are going faster than you really are but considering that the bikes behind you were only catching up in straightaways and looked like had twice the power of your bike, I'd say you were definitely faster than them ;) unless something crazy happens in part 2...

Nice one Schaaf! How good is CB500 in touring mode? Is she comfortable at highway speeds (100 - 130 km/h), or it is constant riding on high revs? I plan to buy little Honda next season. Of course I don't expect BMW 1200rt or Multistrada :P

+MaciakRen I usually cruise at a 110kph on the open road. That's a comfortable speed for the CB500. On motorways I do something between 130-150 but I wouldn't be able to do that for much longer than 2 hours. She's incredibly good in touring mode considering how little she costs. But in the end I'd say any Japanese 600cc 4 cylinder naked with more power would be a better choice for touring.

thanks! Not really, I just changed into first gear and released the clutch too quickly which is causing the rear wheel to hop. I always did that on purpose!

PC26 is that for the A2 licence 35kw? my 2006 honda cbf 500 hase the same engine and i should have 42 kw

+8alakai8 The original PC26 has 58bhp. Mine is 21 years old and due to its age and me not taking great care of it it has less than 50bhp. The PC26 CB500 was built between 93 and 96 I think.

One can see only the road . Put the camera on the top of the car so that we can view al scenery . Colors are not very good . small map is really needed the left corner .Small comment on the side really good .

Dutch & German bikers overwhelmed by a hairpin. About the Dutchies I totally agree, I'm a Belgian living next to the Eifel / Luxembourg, and the majority of Dutchies can't take a simple corner descently. There are as always exceptions ... But Germans ? I love to ride behind the German locals. I see many who take it easy, but was not aware of them having a reputation of being bad at corners. I would even state that most of them have to take more twisties then the Austrians, as low mountain areas have way more twisties then high mountain areas.

+FreEntity of course there are a couple of areas in Germany where you'll find fantastic places to ride. Especially in the south. Obviously people living in these areas know how to ride because they can hit twisties any day they like, just like us Austrians.

The south is high mountain area, the biggest German twisties fun is found in the center, the low mountain areas. Eifel, Hünsruck, Pfalzerwald, Westerwald, Taunus, Suaerland, Harz, etc ... I can show you routes through this areas, that would most likely double the twisties fun factor you'd have in Austria. It's comparable with the area above Linz ... but just twistier. At least 50% of Germany is covered with good twisties, though not so known. I don't find screenshots of these routes that give a good detail, but its comparable to the ones I make in Luxembourg. Go to Google Maps, put the relief button & compare the relief of Luxembourg with the rest of Germany & you'll get the picture ;) scontent-ams3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/t31.0-8/413180_10151783107920127_1442856539_o.jpg Apart from less height difference on these routes, which allows you to go harder, there are just much more roads, allowing you to make more tiny loops around the best valley's. And less crowded villages. (with mostly roads around it to avoid them).

Still there's no way of comparing the foresty twisties of central Germany to actual mountain passes. The turns and, much more important, the outside conditions are completely different. Both are incredibly fun to ride. But absolutely not comparable. And there are quite a lot of areas in Austria where you'll find just what you described. Austria is very small but there are many "low mountain" areas here as well. I'm pretty convinced that you won't find something like the legendary Ochssattel in the whole of Germany.

I did not say, neither did I think you never heard about them before. I haven't done the Ochssattel yet, it was on the planning of my 7000km twisties only Europe trip (to Valencia & back). Skipped Austria & Italy then, as there was a sudden snowfall of 50cm in the higher Alps, and decided to focus the route more towards the technical twisties above and under the Pyrenees and South France. I think I'm in a position to compare high vs low mountain areas very well. They are very different but easy to compare. Personally I prefer the lower mountain areas. More corners / km, less height difference, more options to tweak your route (the higher the mountains the lesser route options). I find it a lot less fatiguing and pleasant (apart from the spectacular views) to ride in lesser known low mountain areas. I can easily do 900km of twisties only in low mountain areas; 580km a day was my max in the Alps, and even with the best intentions (I'm quite good at route making), you have a lot of boring parts inbetween, which you can mostly skip in the lower mountain areas. A better road in Germany then the Ochsattel (I can only rate on video's). I do agree that in the lower mountain area's its harder to find well known names, because they are less long, you'll have to combine them with others. They also stand out less from the surrounding roads. First that comes out of my head (did it last week). The Taunusstrasse : www.google.be/maps/dir/50.0550348,7.8203641/50.0957145,7.8394513/@50.0730984,7.8370279,14z?hl=en The Kyffäuser : www.google.be/maps/dir/51.4285881,11.0466007/51.4000941,11.0806671/@51.415499,11.0587128,14z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e0?hl=en A lot of the smaller K roads between the Nurburgring & Ahrweiler. Some of the tiny K's at the Moesel, etc ... You wont see most fun on a map tho, map detail is mostly too low to make those roads look interesting enough. Many turns are not on the map due to detail points being marked only each 8 meter. I have all on video, but I only use video to score roads on a map (4 scores for each road), to get a good base map on which I make great routes. +3800 mapped in Germany. Video would require too much work to make them legal for KZfaq without consequences. Here in Belgium and Luxembourg, they can still fine you for illegal road speeds, and with a blurred speedo, they just take the average between two points, and calculate the speed. (I have to do variable time remapping + blurred speedo). I cross way to many white lines in overtaking, etc ... I do enjoy your video's a lot, was thinking doing something like that 2 years ago, but the consequences with our legal system, are not worth it sadly. Keep up the good work ;)

+FreEntity that's very impressive. I'm not doubting your "road knowledge" especially because I myself don't have a lot of riding experience. I was just choosing Dutch and Germans for my video from my personal experience. Obviously every nation has its good and bad riders. We Austrians tend to have a Love/Hate relationship with our big German brother. I actually like Germans a lot but it's still way too much fun to tease them a little bit so that's probably another major reason why they ended up as negative example here ;) It's hard to tell the "quality" of a road via video. Of course I know Taunus and Kyffhäuser, they are extremely popular roads in Germany. But I only know them from videos. And of course I'd say that something like Ochssattel is more fun to ride. But I'll only be able to tell for sure once I've been on these famous German roads myself. And you should've simply started the video thing. Cause "my thing" here could be over for legal reasons any second as well. I just want to see how far I can go. So far I've been lucky and "the wrong person" hasn't found my videos yet ;) Another advantage of owning a relatively small channel :)

You're right, the south side is better. But even these can not compete with many other unknown passes. Why babbles almost each of the Stelvio is beautiful. The Stelvio is bad. The only special feature is the height. Not nice to drive and boring. Too much traffic and tourists.

I think the Alps have the best riding roads and views in the World. We have some awesome views in Western States, but much less riding roads and not even close to these in terms of fun and riding freedom.
