Good Morning. Howdy. I'm a middle aged, middle Englander and I NEVER tire of the Big Country. It is outstanding on so many levels. Gregory Peck as yet another civilised hero resisting violence, the landscape, Jean Simmons so fesity & beautiful (the thinking she takes to sell Big Muddy is a great bit of acting), the finest of film soundtracks (and not just the opening theme) , the fabulous twilight fight with Chuck H and Burl Ives brilliant bulk & voice. I bloody love it.

Jerome Moross, in my opinion, is not given enough attention for his musical scoring like Dmitri Tiomkin, Elmer Bernstein, Alfred and Lionel Newman, to name four composers. But, for sheer listening and admiration, this will go down as Moross' finest hour, scoring The Big Country. Some of that ability was also used for some television westerns, as well. What a contributor to the genre of cinema soundtracking.

Jerome Moross got robbed at the Awards Ceremony Because he was a brilliant composer and the Music Score for Big Country deserved an Academy Award, PERIOD!!!!!

The score to this movie just drips Wild West, or “big country” if you will. The chord changes are so powerful and majestic. Got to be the best western score ever done, and it predates magnificent seven by a few years. Just excellent music.

One of my all time favorite music pieces from Jerome Moross with 3 variations in The Big Country....he would use similar music in the Jawhawkers with Jeff Chandler and Fess Parker but this pieces is the buildup to the Terrels v Hanassays!!

I put this on KZfaq a million years ago and I mucho appreciate all the positive comments you guys have added to it. They just don't make westerns like this anymore - no, it's all shoot 'em ups today, instead of story. And music today - yuk! It's like you can't wait to get out of the grocery store, right? But I enjoy getting e-mails from people with 3 digit IQs, so if ya wanta send me one, have at it. And by the way, the year is 2022 right now, so if it's like 2036 when you reply, I'll be long gone. Yours truly, sramsey@neo.rr.com

The men in the movie couldn't understand McKay because he wouldn't play by their set of rules. Let's put him on Ol Thunder so we can laugh and jeer at him. McKay: "No, thanks. " McKay wasn't lost because he could read a compass and navigate with the stars. " You're a liar, " says Leech. And so it goes...

@billgarstang Before putting this on KZfaq, I sent it to some e-mail buds, and none of them appreciated it! One guy said it was "abrasively boring", and another said the sound quality was too rotten to enjoy it. Well, sorry - but going from VHS to DVD to video cam to computer loses stuff, but better to have it that way than not at all. And to the guy who said it was boring, what's exciting to you? An atom bomb?
