In the middle of 2021, Michael Burry made a bet that the US bond market would go down, and over the following year it fell over 30%.
At the time, this trade didn’t really get much media attention because ultimately we don’t actually know how much money he made on it, if anything at all.
But the details don’t really matter, because he was right, the bond market did fall… alot
So it caught my attention when I saw this morning that Burry had made a bet against the US Stock Market
What confused me is that no one reporting on it seems to actually understand why he made this bet
When in fact it’s actually kind of obvious if you know which place to look.
So let me paint a picture of how the man famous for predicting the housing collapse, is now betting on the collapse of the entire stock market
And the May 18th report by S&P Global which shows us why he might be right.

In the middle of 2024, I think we'll start to see more market diversification. I'm hoping to invest about $300,000 from a recent home sale into the financial markets, but I'm still not sure how rates will effect the market just yet, which worries me a lot. I am a techie, and I have tried to understand put and call options before, but you did the best job of explaining it. It was such a simple and effective explanation. Also, media didn't report the other side of the Burry coin, he is an asset manager and he specializes in risk reduction while maximizing profit, contrary to the public opinion that he only works to maximize profits. I am 100% sure that in case if his bet was to go south, the other part of his portfolio would have a high probablity of going up and hence offsetting his losses from this bet.

Which is exactly what he's done, his largest holding Experian is travel related, something we don't really want to/aren't able to do when our jobs are at risk and the economy is in the toilet. When you dive deeper like you've stated just appears to be a well thought out hedge which isn't exactly leveraging anywhere near the exposure of 1.6BN like many uniformed on options seem to think is the case. The way I see this recession most likely has an external cause. The United States is losing influence as a federal currency for the first time in decades. They don’t have any economies to utilize or control their inflation, and less money is being spent on stock and oil trading than previously. They all lend credence to the hypothesis that a new multilateral world order may be in the works.

That he purchased a put contract doesn’t mean that he’s betting the market will go down, he can also be hedging his bullish position on the market in case it does go down. Wow, a 16 minute Video on what actually didn't happen. He opened a Calendar Spread, he also sold covered QQQ Calls. He insured his multi billion dollar position with the PUT, and received multiple million dollar credit for selling the shorter term OTM calls to pay for the insurance. It's insurance, because the PUT increases in value, when the share price falls, the Calls make a cashflow when the share tumbles or stays flat, and locks in profits if the Call is assigned.

Remember that Burry bought an *options* contract, he didn't actually buy (or short) any stocks. He doesn't necessarily think the market will definitely fall; he just thinks there's a chance that it could. Now, he has the option to profit if the market did fall.

Burry's position for these put options is only like 5% of the total value of the investment firm. The reason the numbers published for this trade were so high is because it looked at the value of the stocks in the bet based on their total value at sale, i.e. the $100 sale price, not the $5 he paid for the option

Great presentation. Finally got it with call and put options, and I see the case with Burry's bet against the 6 big stocks holding everything up. The other factor in that equation is the rising dollar. Last time the dollar got this higher earlier in the year banks started breaking. Fed patched them up quickly without too much ado. We'll see what happens this time, if anything, but certainly things don't feel too stable.

Those on the other side of Burry’s bet may lack the ability to make good on the contract and hence default. Just as insurance companies make good on their contracts, up to their claims paying capabilities. Force majeure on the COMEX or other platform may even trigger an avalanche of defaults and inabilities to satisfy contractual obligations.

I think 13-F would have securities, so the options should be cleared by the OCC? But yeah, contagion still seems plausible (eg, if OCC can't recover net equity from brokers) I don't think force majeure even came into play during 2020, though (but there could always be some bigger or different event)

March 2020 marked a revelation of a massive bearish bet by Burry. However, the SPX soared by an astonishing 72% in the subsequent 12 months Moving to September 2022, Burry predicted lingering failures in the stock market, suggesting that the bottom had not yet been reached. Again, the market responded differently, witnessing a 21% upswing over the next 11 months. Earlier this year, in January, the ‘Big Short’ urged investors to ‘sell,’ citing his prediction of a recession and new inflation round. However, the SPX remained resilient, recording a 17% increase year-to-date Summarizing, Burry had more misses than hits.
