The Big 6 of Prog are: Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. But are they truly deserving of such praise? I make my case for an emphatic "YES!"

Definitely think Van der Graaf Generator is close to being in the big six. I reckon their music is very good, and at times better than the big six. I think they're not talked about much due to their unconventional sound. My modern big five (I couldn't think of a sixth band as prominent) are the following, in no particular order: Dream Theater Porcupine Tree Opeth Tool Marillion

I agree with your official big six. That does seem to be the consensus. However, there are some very important bands who missed the bus. Those would be Rush, Gentle Giant, Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Kansas, Camel and Van der Graaf Generator. There are others too but those would be the next big six imo.

Prog, to me, showcases musical virtuosity. It mixes melody with complexity. There are lots of fast passages designed to create excitement and it borrows heavily from classical music. In short, it's NOTHING AT ALL what Pink Floyd does. Top Six? Gotta be Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, Tull and Genesis (Even though I don't love Genesis and Tull lost me after Passion Play , and Ian essentially "adopted" the prog genre)). And of course, King Crimson. Hell, there's early Crimson, Middle Crimson and later Crimson. -- right there are three different bands that were all prog pioneers.

Great video! The big six make up 6/10 of my favourite prog rock bands from the 70s. The 4 that I would add in to make a big ten of 70s prog (just based on my personal taste and what I've heard) are: Rush (they are number 1 of 70s prog in my books), Gentle Giant, Supertramp and The Alan Parson's Project. For a modern prog rock big six, my favourites are: The Mars Volta Porcupine Tree Thank You Scientist Coheed and Cambria The Dear Hunter Steven Wilson If you count prog metal, that's a tough one cause there are lots of greats but my favourites would be among: Protest the Hero Between the Buried and Me Dream Theater Symphony X Haken The Human Abstract TesseracT Periphery Opeth Devin Townsend Tool Mastodon

This group is a legacy era big six. And I know that's a common consensus. For me I've probably make it a terrific ten and include personal favorites of Camel, Kansas, Moody Blues, and Renaissance! I have more at least as comprehensive collections of these bands than of some of the big six. Love classic era Floyd and Yes. The other four are great but quickly wear out there welcome with me. Then one has to think about making a more modern big six. For that list I have Lee Abraham, Big Big Train, IQ, Magenta, Marillion, Mostly Autumn, Neil Morse Band, Pendragon, Spock's Beard, and Transatlantic. But with the modern stuff it really becomes a personal choice sort of thing.

I think that The Moody Blues should replace Jethro Tull, simply because Ian Anderson continually maintains that he was doing a parody of Prog and not just on the Thick as a Brick album. I don't understand why so many Prog bands refuse to just own their place in Progdom. It's like Sabbath keeps saying, they weren't Metal. Yeah, technically, they weren't, because Metal didn't exist in the 70s, but now it exists, and so now, they WERE Metal, retrospectively speaking. But, if a very lucrative tour, festival, or gig pops up, then suddenly everyone becomes whatever you want to call them.

Nice ! I'm almost in complete agreement here. You've chosen almost all the same solo albums from your top billings. Never really been a huge fan of Peter Gabriel solos, but great shout with Anthony Phillips. Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman would definitely make it into my top 30. Fish out of Water and Voyage of the Acolyte are phenomenal pieces of work and would be in or around my top 10 prog single albums. This is where I don't think it's fair to include doubles (on the LP format) or Live albums, but I'm being pedantic, maybe too much of a puritan 😄. I would like to put forward a brilliant band.. Camel to join your top six, making it a 'Magnificent 7' .. 🤔 I feel that their first 4 albums are worthy of inclusion. The collosal Camel (self titled debut) The marvellous Mirage (2nd offering) The sublime Snowgoose ( a classic of a concept album) Finally, their 4th ... the majestic Moonmadness (a bit of a biography of the members of the band). These 4 would ALL be in my top 15.... ❤️🐪🎵 Enjoyable, thought provoking post, cheers 👍

Well, since times change it's hard to say who would be a big six of the modern era. I personally would like to include Ozric Tentacles but they seem to be forgotten by many these days (if people even heard of them in the first place). Echolyn also haven't aged that well unfortunately. Both of these bands would easily make a big five or six of the 90s. So it might be hard to include a modern big six (if we are going by popularity) without getting into metal influenced bands or prog metal. Many people will say Dream Theater, Haken, Opeth, Tool or Riverside but those are all metal or metallish and even Porcupine Tree became metallish later on. All very good bands but imo prog metal should have its own list.

I find Pink Floyd to be the least prog of these bands. In my opinion, if you include Floyd, who I think were heavily influenced by the Doors in the early days, you must talk about the Doors as pre-prog, especially the albums that pre-date Darkside of the Moon. Animals does return Floyd to pre Darkside. I would also posit that Floyd did concept albums, that may not be prog. If the idea of a concept album is what defines the prog element, then we must include the likes of Quadraphenia and say Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain," to name a few. I know that point may be thin, but playing Devil's advocate, if you will. Cheers and great channel.

@@TheProgCorner Yeah, the more Jazz-jam elements of the Doors, definitely. The psychadelic rock music of the 60's gave prog, and to a degree metal, the entrance into exploring thematic elements that Jazz had already initiated prior. I see the rise of punk, as a reaction more to prog and stadium rock, as a minimalist reaction. But, in this regard punk can not be sold short as many of those bands included Jazz themes in their music, from the Stooges "Funhouse" to Refused's "The Shape of Punk to Come," whose title is a direct nod to Ornette Coleman.

I am mostly impressed with your collection of vinyl. You will never get 2 "Prague" fans in the same room to agree on a BEST 6 bands.... My contention is this - if you really think about what "progressive" means in the discipline of music, why do The Beatles never come up in these discussions? You said yourself, the "Big Six" all formed between 1967 and 1970. Who was challenging the establishment of pop music before any of them had started?: The Beatles. I get it that they are famous beyond the prog world - I am all about the underdogs and under-rateds but it's kind of like trying to be the best Christian but refusing to acknowledge Jesus. I am a knowledgeable fan of each of "The Big Six", but other acts never in this discussion that should be if you really think about what "progressive" means...
