In 1967, one year after the assassination of Prime Minister Dr. Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, the South African government minted a one rand coin in 80% silver commemorating the death of the former prime minister.
Hendrik Verwoerd was South Africa's prime minister from 1958-1966. He was notorious for promoting the South African segregation system known as Apartheid. In fact, he was called the Architect of Apartheid. He was also prime minister when the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960 happened, and where in the same year an assassination attempt was made on him when he was visiting an exhibition in Johannesburg. He survived the first attempt, but in 1966 he didn't. This time, he was stabbed to death by Dimitri Tsafendas, a Greek-Mozambican person. As a result, this coin was minted.
In 1967, one South African Rand was worth USD $1.40, which is interesting for a coin that has a little more silver than a US half dollar, 0.3585 troy oz ASW to be exact. Today, the Rand has nearly depreciated in value.
