As a die-hard college football fan in the states I identify strongly with and love this fella. We’re a small university in the poorest state in america who in 95 years has only ever competed for a title once. We just got a new president who’s an independently wealthy fella from the state. Even though we’ll never compete for the biggest prize, it, as a fan makes a world of difference to have a leader who’s roots are the roots of the fans and cares like a fan. God bless fellas like steve parish. Wins or losses be damned, it means more to his community than he can ever know.

10 points seems harsh considering Portsmouth only got docked 9 for going into administration. FFP should be tacking the big clubs ie title challengers not mid table clubs like Everton. It's annoying how likeable Steve is... as a Charlton fan... very much enjoyed this one. Refreshing to hear from an owner as apart from for example your own club owner, it's rare to hear from others unless they are in trouble or do something like I don't know ask their fans for £2million.... and it was great to hear what it's like to run a football club, and as Steve rightly said a lot of people reckon they probably could do it, not me thanks, I have enough trouble running a bath let alone a football club... Talking of the elite and how much money there is in the PL I am glad Charlton is in LG1. Yes, I'd love to see us back up there, but we'd be getting battered every week, as we cannot compete with the Man City's and Liverpool's etc and I do feel for clubs like Crystal Palace etc who do perhaps "struggle" in comparison. Keep up the good work guys, found this podcast by accident about a month ago and now I'm hooked.

A few years later, Platini was banned from football for 4 years for financial corruption. Amazing how so many of the big FFP advocates have been implicated in fraud and financial crime.

My only bone of contention with Mr Parish's position was when he said that Governments getting involved isn't positive (in terms of outcome I presume). The Government weren't involved with Bury and others going into administration/under/out of business, nor were they involved in the European Super League, nor were they involved in allowing clubs to be bought with 100% debt and for that debt to be loaded on the club (see Liverpool & Man Utd). You can also see/draw parallels with the 'performance' of strategically vital utilities that were privatised here in the UK.

Many thanks to Steve for being so candid. As a fan of Scottish football, and English football generally (always followed the Scots in the 80/90s), I’m really saddened at the way European club football has gone, generally. Steve touches on the unsustainability of the current financial model. Right now, it’s the PL, but those of us who can remember a more even playing field recall La Liga and Serie A, even Ligue Un (with Marseille), and Holland with (PSV/Ajax both winning CL). Things change. The sad thing is that the country currently enjoying the money feels protective of it, as Steve says (a strong PL is the most important thing). Those of us who are “looking in” aren’t bitter, just aware that for every Scottish team suffering (Dundee Utd and Aberdeen reached European finals in the 80s), there are also Croatian, Swedish, Belgian and Dutch fans nodding along. If you’re still not bothered, and can’t see how the PL won’t last like this forever, look at Serie A and La Liga now, trying to keep up with mid-table PL clubs. In essence, English football fans are becoming worried about Saudi/Super League, but many of us have been sucking up a very real disparity over a much longer time, seeing the rot of once great leagues and teams. The choice football fans, en masse, have, is to accept greed and temporal successes at your club, vs. Unifying and presenting a coherent, more equal footing, across Europe. Be careful you’re not perpetuating elitism, because you’ll only be at the top for a while. And I write that sadly.

The PL is successful. The way they've branded it, evolved it etc over the years. Yeah maybe it won't last forever, but I can't see it changing any time soon either. When Serie A and Liga were at the top, I didn't see them being concerned about the PL/English football in the 90s/early 2000s... things changed, because of how the PL has been run, the tv coverage and people liking the culture, etc., of the PL. It is what it is. The PL is not responsible for the success or failure of other countries leagues, anymore than they are for English football. How do you create an equal footing across all leagues? Seriously ? Every nation or FA (or whatever the equivalent is called for each different league) is responsible for their own league. Unfortunately, like a lot of things and sport is no different, its what is demanded commercially, a 'product' (no different from other team sports or individuals, golfers, tennis players, etc, etc) and the PL have done a very good job at marketing itself and has grown stronger and stronger over the last 20 years or so. Yes, it is dominating football financially/commercially and yes of course there is a knock on effect because of that. But if it wasn't the PL, then it would be La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, etc., etc. If they were in the same PL position today and some of them once were... they didn't do anything to change it then, nor do I suspect they would today. Mainly because they don't see it as their responsibility to do so. Whether we like it or not, there is a massive commercial aspect to sport, its capitalism basically. It isn't communism lol they are not going to split the pie evenly across all leagues. It just doesn't work like that. I don't see a Super League happening any time soon. Fans are very protective of the tradition of their own football league, as we saw a few years ago... the Saudi league could take off, because they have the money to do so. But at the same time, domestic and European cup competitions are historically the pinnacle and tradition. I just don't see them competing with European football, regardless of how much money they pump in. They may take a number of players away, because of the huge wages and I could be very wrong, but I don't see it being a long term success, because on balance, top players want a career of the players they saw growing up, playing in the PL, La Liga, Serie A, etc., etc. and the Euro cups. If the PL bubble bursts, another league will happily take its place and not think about an equal footing. It might be wrong/not the best model, but its actually nothing new.

Thanks for that 🙏 I get a lot of the reasoning; capitalism etc For me, it doesn’t mean we are all exactly the same, or communist. There will always be a top dog, so to speak, the difference is now that it has never been quite as dispirit. I really do remember a more even time. For eg, there were 9 different European Cup winners in the 80s, from 6 different countries, and with 6 first-time winners. 9 again in the 90s. 8 countries. 4 first time winners. Last 20 years: 4 countries. No new winners except Chelsea and City, those plucky underdogs.

The biggest problem with VAR is the lines being drawn to determine whether a player on or off. I might be a size 7 and the attacker is a size 10 his boot, he will be adjusted to be offside because of the lines. Why are lazy defenders getting away with not defending properly. Go back to where daylight between defenders and forwards will determine on or offside. Too many rule changes over the past few years goal line technology should be all you need.

When discussing VAR, there has to be a reference to Cricket and it’s DRS system; where a review is on the big screen, the audio from reviewing umpire (in the case of cricket) being broadcast live. It also takes many minutes for that review. But, there is barely any controversy as the conversation is broadcast, we all see live and on the big screen the angles the DRS umpire is asking for and why and what he is seeing and discussing when making his decision. There is a corresponding reduction in controversy or questioning of decisions in cricket.

With all of this coming to roost. Surely it is time the Supporters now own the majority shareholdings of their own clubs. Billionaire owners appoint the best lawyers to circumvent their moral obligations and try and look for all kinds of loopholes to try to get past the FFP rules. All supporters want to see their football clubs winning Of course they do., However, they want their clubs to operate in a proper and fair way. Remember the fiasco a few years ago when the Millionaires/Billionaires Owners of the Big Six nearly completed the deal of leaving the Premier League to join a European Super League without the supporters even knowing. Do you want that to happen again? We need Football clubs to be owned by their supporters - At the very least the supporters owe 51% the majority share of the clubs that they go and see every week. The other 49% can then be owned by foreign investment or private enterprises. And even with that, they need to be thoroughly checked out by the Government before they are allowed to join the ship. To see that they are legit and suitable as joint owners within the football club.

This excuse about VAR decisions taking too long as is Football is a fast paced game like Basketball is a very poor excuse to use. Rugby and Cricket are prime examples of technology being used within the game and with no confusion of the rules and how to implement them. Yes those sports are slower paced, but there's no reason for VAR to rush into incorrect decisions.

Explain why Chelsea get a clear sporting advantage admit guilt of cooking ffp books over years pay to hush it up but everton get 10pts for 1 technical charge. The premier league know about it but nothing dibe

I'm going to try and decipher what you wrote but I'm guessing you're asking something along the lines of why Chelsea have yet to be punished for deliberately avoiding FFP and Everton have despite their offence being a lot less serious. The simple answer is the PL didn't know until Chelsea's takeover happened, that Chelsea were cheating. There's an ongoing investigation and I'd assume looking at the charges, their punishment is going to be a lot more severe. In regards to Everton, their argument is basically based upon the notion that COVID happened and the PL aren't being sympathetic enough to give them a break. The counterpoint to that though is simple, like the other 17 clubs in the league, you shouldn't have been in that position in the first place.

@kriissyy09ify agreed. Not saying we aren't guilty. What I am saying is premier league didn't have a punishment for this until the summer then fast tracked us through despite more serious and already proven cases already being present. They knew about this last year when Todd found the info and reported it to the premier league. That case is settled, its black and white.

38:25 I think the reason no managers have been sacked has alot too do with the teams in relegation all been the promoted clubs with the smallest premier League club, Bournemouth hanging out right next to them. 18:30 Premier League clubs wanting to join a European Super League is stupid short-termism..basically it would be the end of English dominance Your telling me if Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, PSG had the same revenue as the premier League top clubs they would not leapfrog them? Yes Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea might be 100mil better off a season but then the Spanish clubs are gonna be 200mil better off and the Italian clubs 300mil, dutch clubs 400mil etc etc No longer will they have to sell there best players too English clubs Also let's be honest if everyone is earning more revenue all that is gonna happen is there gonna fight over players more so wages and transfer fees will just inflate and that extra cash will be gone and then they will be moaning they need yet more money 🎠🎠🎠

there's a rumour that's been doing the rounds for years in Middlesbrough about Alan Shearer, I heard it first many years ago and have always wondered if there's any truth to it, or is it just jealous bitter rivalry, it goes...... some tradesmen from Boro were working on Shearer's gaff, (think it was in or around Wynard) and when Shearer was there the lads would greet him, with the norm "Alright pal &/or Now then Shearer or How's it going??? & "isn't it about time you came to your senses and play for the last team to win a cup in the North East, my beloved Boro" (lol, that's just what I would have greeted him with, lol) anyway apparently he never replied to them, just giving them a look that's saying "how dare you, you lot are insignificant to me" Gary will you please ask Alan about this, he was probably having a bad day and possibly muttered "Aye I'm alright lads thanks" and Chinese Whispers have made it worse, Love the show, you 3 are quality, like 3 musketeers, All for one and one for all..... lol UTB

Thing about the argument of clubs not being able to catch up due to FFP.. if there were no FFP, the PL would end up even more full of very rich owners and states and clubs in Europe would fall even further behind

Seems a top bloke. Very eloquent & genuine. Thing about Palace is they have a huge catchment area (half of south London & the outskirts). A bigger, modern stadium could attract 50000 crowds if team push on. Don't really like Palace (used to live near there and they always seemed to beat Sunderland when played us) but would be great if an owner like Parish got his club up into top 7 in the right way - not like Sandcastle United and any other Oil FC cheating bastards.

the reason the rugby world cup was focused on the refs so much is because its going through a huge transition period as the sport is literally making people vegetables before they hit old age, its needed and will improve, overall video refeering in rugby is the highest standard and has been for probably 2 decades. Not asking the question is far worse than asking it, the amount of bad refereeing decisions that were forgotten because of no VAR is countless, the speculation against referees and potential manipulation of the sport was common among fans for a long time, especially bias against the bigger teams which is no longer unquestioned and will get smaller and smaller as the quality and efficiency of the system improves, which it will.

cap the transfer maximum, including packages and wages and someone would still bend the rules, it's no longer the best teams winning, it's the wealthiest. The elite have taken away the working class game.

With VAR teams should get two chances to use VAR if they are right to use it they still have two if they get it wrong they lose one and if they get a bad decision it's there own fault for not being 100% sure on decisions they got wrong because there going to have signs in place with the players to call for it or just leave it and that would probably get back to a better standard instead of refs leaving big decisions to the VAR team.
