In Danny’s latest PetrolRevolt interview, we chat with Steve Parrish, a legendary motorcycle and truck racer and one of the most fun and recognisable figures in the world of motorsports.
Steve has competed in some of the most challenging and prestigious races in the world, including 500cc GP and the Isle of Man TT.
Steve turned professional at the age of 22 in 1976, winning the ACU Solo title in the British Motor Cycle Championship. In the same year he became team mate to Barry Sheene on a Suzuki and competed in the 1977 500cc world championship. Parrish finished fifth in the 1977 500cc world championship, before returning to British-based riding to become the 1978 500cc British Champion. He also won the Shell 500 title in both 1979 and 1980, and a Superbike title in 1981.
After retiring from motorcycle racing in 1986, Parrish starting a successful truck racing career, winning the 1987 British Open Truck Racing Championship. Parrish took both the European and British Truck Racing championship titles in 1990, then held the British title for four years and retained the European title for three years driving for the BP-Mercedes Benz team. Parrish regained the prestigious European crown again in 1996 in Jarama. The most successful truck racer ever, he retired in 2002 at the age of 47 to hand over to Terry Rymer.
Parrish was appointed team manager for the UK Yamaha factory race team form 1987 to1991. During this time he went on to lead the team to three successful British Superbike championship titles in 1987, 1989 and 1990.
In 1985, Parrish started commentating for BBC radio, before joining Sky television to commentate on Superbike alongside Barry Nutley He moved to the BBC in 1990 to commentate on the British 125 championship, before transferring to the BBC’s Moto GP coverage, currently undertaken with Charlie Cox. The pair have a rapport and have commentated on a number of series for the BBC from the late 1990s, including British Touring Cars, British and World Superbikes and now MotoGP. A qualified pilot, Parrish also a commentator for the Red Bull Air Race series for Channel 4. Isle of Man TT Races for ITV4 & NW200 for BBC NI
A renowned practical joker and his stories are legendary. He was banned from Macau after blowing up a brothel and once posed as a medical doctor to allow John Hopkins to fly from Japan to the Australian GP…
Steve has a wealth of experience and infectious passion for the sport.

Awesome Steve is such an interesting guy used to watch him race back in the 70's with Barry and Mick Grant on the Kawasaki's a real proper character I remember being at brands taking snaps of them coming out to race and seeing Steve's blue Rolls parked up with his personal plate great times and how things have changed but the love for bikes never dies .😉👌👍Great watch

Nice one. Talking about how modern racers lose their youth to being professional, this is why the VR46 camp is such a important machine because they are all friends and have a community that fosters some life. And I want to think they are just getting started!

Crackin' interview 👍. My late Father was a bike racer in the 60's, and his life advise was "Throttle yer Bottle". Evel Knievel as well, after his "off" at Wembley said from his stretcher "We're here to live, not to exist". I won't die wondering 😉

As always Stavros gave a great interview 👍. Totally agree with Barry’s last words to Stavros. I’ve had 2 heart attacks and a bad bike crash, but I still try to enjoy life and do the things I want to do. Sadly I am going to have to give up riding after 43 years due to a nerve condition that is wasting my muscles and taking the feeling away that is essential to riding. I will always though be able to look back on some great times doing things that most people will never do.

I still buy the over sweet Cadbury boost bars because they sponsored Yamaha race team in the 80's. The power of advertising, Steve, just like the rest of us, are winging it usually

Of course not everyone can live that sort of dream some of what it takes is genetic somehow just hard to understand natural ability that oozes out of a very small percentage of human beings ....I lusted to be good and I got halfway good like most of my riding racing buddies but ONE friend of mine my next neighbor younger brother of my pal was just naturally SO gifted on 2 wheels. His dad bought him and his brother the larger frame schwinn bikes when they were like 10 years old not the 20" sixe that everyone associates with stunts and bmx you know the larger ones ....well this kid Jim could instantly wheelie that bike forever like it was nothing! They had these terraces graded for future home building and he literally flew off the things like a total madman he was ! He is the only one I know that ever snapped the gooseneck on a Schwinn bicycle...got really banged up too because the terrace was like 10 foot or more anyway then we all got mini bikes and he was crazy good on his home built bed frame min with big heavy 5 hp briggs engine damn thing went like 50 or so I think! THEN we all got Yamaha enduros but again his dad opted for larger bike than the rest of us who all had AT1 and CT1 Yamaha 125/175 but HE and his brother shated the ill handling DT! Enduro you would not believe how well that kid could ride that thing! Bone stock with SHIT worn out "trials " tires .....he truly could slide that bike like a seasoned pro on flat track! And then thing was he did not even care about riding! It was simply one more thing to do ,,,,I have no doubt whatsoever that had someone got behind him and pushed him to race he would have dominated ALL locals and went right to expert and pro...but no one noticed him no one knew,,,,what a shame ....He just ended up working in Data Processing or something boring and just upper midlle class successful but he COULD have been a contender! He COULD have been a name! easily I;m just saying I bet only a small percentage of the rare raw talent gets tapped like Steve Parrish did

My favourite motorcycle commentator by far. Then James Witham The only new ish commentator i really like in recent years has been Cam Donald TT commentary. But still Parrish is better, his NW200 the other week reminded me. For Cars it was James Hunt, Bikes Steve Parrish. There's too many Murray walker wannabe style commentary these days, getting over excited by every single little thing and a lot of talking utter nonsense. And no brutal james hunt style commentator to keep it in balance. We want knowledgeable commentary that's also entertaining. When John McGuinness one day retires I'd love it if he did commentary, he'd be ideal for it. He knows what he's talking about and he can entertain everyone as he says it. I now Murray had a big following but I wasn't one of them, and that commentary worked ok alongside James Hunt because James was the complete opposite, no nonsense, said it as he saw it live at 2 in the afternoon. If Murray Walker was talking rubbish, James wasn't afraid of saying so.

Brilliant interview. Parrish is like a living legend from a bygone and better era when men were men and sponsors were terrified, when riders said 'I' when they were interviewed post race and not the corporate 'we'. Loved him saying it like it is about health & safety and 'woke' insanity and having little girls who know nothing about bikes or racing being dragged on to commentate on bikes and racing. I mean, you wouldn't get a bloke telling women how to put on make up would you? er, hang on, oh yeah, now you do!
