Hang in there. We have 3 boys in their 30s and they have all found and married great women with good values. Example Our youngest son when he first graduated college took his girlfriend out to a fancy dinner. A few days latter she told him it was a great dinner but don't waist money on her like that again. She grew up on a farm and her father died when she was in middle school so they did not have a lot of money.

LOL. Yeah for many it is likely income. I think many making 50K over their entire lifetimes only end up with about 1.7 million over that same period of time. No being a cash millionaire requires having either extremely low expenses or making very high lifetime dollar amounts of money. I doubt the precentage of people who meet those requirements is very high at any given point in time.

The 6 and 7 figure people, living paycheck to paycheck, don't have a plan and certainly are not executing a plan. In "Tuff Times Never Last, Tough People Do", If you do not have a plan, they are planning to fail. That ranges from the people like my dad saying that "he does not have enough income for a budget" to the caller a few days ago saying that their 3000/mo food budget is holding them back from paying off their under 10K student loans which are in forbearance while making a 170K/yr. @@gibblespascack1418 making the plan (math) takes maybe 30 minutes to an hour of you life to figure out your goal. Living the rest of your life on said plan takes everything you got to succeed. Its 99% discipline. Its like a construction permit plan....we don't give credit to the permit when we build houses, we give credit to the labor because the permit is just a plan. Here's another one. Tom Brady is successful because of his skills gained from work he has put in, not the plays (plan) that are drawn off a playbook. Anyone can use the same playbook and still fail. It has to do with the discipline and that's what you did. Good job on sticking to the plan. You are the winner for staking committed and remaining disciplined, not the plan.

If you don’t mind me asking, how much was the original mortgage? Great job BTW paying it off fast.

@cogenman House price was $220,500. We put 20% down so that gave us a mortgage of $176,400. We did a 15 year and the interest rate was 4.375%. Both my wife and I are engineers so we were making about $65k each at the time. Neither of us had any debt. We could have taken out a car loan but decided to work on the house first. We went to college in Georgia so the HOPE scholarship covered tuition if you keep a 3.0 GPA. That allowed us to avoid taking out any student loans. We basically put half of our take home pay towards the mortgage every month and were still able to live comfortably. Grated house prices and interest rates today are higher so it would take a little longer if we were doing it again in takes market. Also it was before we had kids so that helped.

But now my mortgage is at 2.25% while my savings account is over 4%. Instead of paying extra toward the mortgage I’m putting it in the bank. Also helps that the savings accounts is at another bank so there isn’t temptation to dip into it.

How about no credit card and balance?

Even if you pay them off monthly, credit cards make you overspend.

And the cool thing is that, at some point, your investments will be growing by more than you could out in. When you realise your investments are increasing by the same amount each as your total income, and it's building momentum and taking a life of it's own, it's a good feeling. Wait until you start getting $1500 a month from your investments, and you could be paying their car payments for them, without having to earn that money

The reverse is unfortunately true: if you can make money by yourself, a financially illiterate spouse can sure as hell ruin it for you. You can’t drag someone kicking and screaming into wealth.

Reason for my suggestion is that most callers nowadays are already fired up about getting out of debt, or are well on their way to becoming millionaires. But there is another swath of America, folks in poverty who believe they have no agency, that government is singularly to blame, citing minimum wage not enough to feed a family, as proof.

Now I earn 3x than before, while my husband has squandered away his time (I make 2.5x his current salary), he has no self discipline and it feels like he doesn't understand how his actions actively sabotage OUR future. I cannot have kids because my husband refuses to step up and be mature, and what's heartbreaking is I became a better person because I loved my husband enough to realize I needed to change and not negatively affect his future, however he never loved me enough to make the effort. He screwed over his 401K, he worked for a company who matched and he never set it up, for 3 yrs straight he got mail about his 401k and everytime he did I told him to contact fidelity and set it up, because you're not investing the money you're putting in so you're losing money on inflation. After pestering him for several years on finances, needing to pull his weight, and begging him to show me some affection, I am deciding I will not procreate with him, I can't be more invested or care about him and his future than he is, and I will just have to wait until my love for him has dried up before I divorce him. I hate that I can see my love slowly turning to resentment, and no matter how much I suggest marriage counseling and individual therapy (because what he is doing makes no sense) he refuses. He says he loves me and wants to be together, but barely shows affection unless I ask, has only ever given me one gift which was an orchid (which died cause I never cared for plants and orchids are notoriously hard to care for) then uses that as an excuse as to why he won't gift me anything (Because "he's bad at gifting, so I didn't like the orchid and killed it" 🙄) The man is emotionally manipulative, and my brain logically knows better but I still am in love with the person I thought I knew, not whoever the heck I'm married to now.
