Well, if Warcry ever gets shut down, Mordheim taught me that it will never really go away. The passion of the fans in that community have kept it going to this day, and it got canceled over 15 years ago or so. Also Mordheim is just grand. To be honest, I didn't notice that Warcry was without a getting started set... that feels like a real misstep. I'm a new Warcry player, too, and I didn't even realize this. I just wandered over from killteam and Necromunda, wanting a fantasy based skirmish game and I've been having a blast. But for a fresher faced person coming into the hobby (I've also been in tabletop since the late 90s) this issue feels a bit like a locked door, if you follow my meaning

Oh man, I was playing LATE 90s, being a 90s kid. I totally missed out on Mordheim and it kills me because that game looked so damn cool. Honestly, when I noticed Warcry had no starter, it all started to make sense. Anecdotally there are so few stores that actually run Warcry. But you know what they do run? Underworlds, and that game has a Starter Set. Cheap too at only 40 quid. Warcry is competing with another game in the same universe, that is also skirmish scale. Bonkers.

Yes, as someone who mostly played blood bowl during the years it wasn't supported by gw and who's favourite format in magic the gathering isn't supported by Wizards I can agree that sometimes the game is better when the company can't or won't mess around with the rules and it's only fan supported:)

@@wargamesontoast If you guys like Mordheim, you really need to check out Frostgrave, from Osprey Games. Similar scale and premise, but a cleaner, more modern rule set. Definitely worth looking into. Frankly, I don't see Underworlds and Warcry as being all that competitive with one another. I personally find the deck-building aspect of Underworlds a deal-breaker. I think the cynical marketing idea behind Underworlds was to create a game that would lure Magic the Gathering players over into the minis space. I personally *hate* deck-building, and although I buy the occasional Underworlds warband purely for the models, I've never enjoyed the game.

They definitely need an always available starter box, and a pack like the Kill Team pack with tokens etc; at least if they are going to continue releasing boxes as they have been doing. But I couldn't disagree more about data cards, GW should be moving away from printed materials, in my opinion; and they started off well with this edition of Warcry, releasing free rules and all the stats; they just need to keep them up-to-date with errata changes, keep on top of new releases, and extend the warband builder to create a full PDF of all of the warband's rules. No one trying to get started should have to buy an out of print book and past issue(s) of a magazine just to use their existing Warhammer Underworlds models either.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the PDFs. But when you are teaching players and introducing them to a game, you know what really helps? Cards. I’ve taught a lot of a warcry and time and time again new players engage more with cards infront of them than a PDF on their phone. I don’t think I made it clear in my video (partially because it was beyond they scope of what I wanted to do with the video), but the FREE materials for Warcry are excellent. An amazing change that I want to see more of. I just think they are clunky and not as engaging for newbies who are just starting. That and the compendium is information overload if you are pulling from AOS factions and whatnot. Thanks for watching, it’s great getting a differing perspective on things.

I am a big fan of Warcry but am of the opinion that the first starter set was the best. Two warbands, card sets, dice, measuring stick and a great variety of terrain. Catacombs was off the wall and sets since then have been less than perfect for new players. I tend to ignore GWs constant changing of stats and still use my old cards as I don't play competitively.

Getting into Warcry is more complicated than the game itself. The OG Starter Box was incredible and I always thought it was odd that every Warcry set since wasn't quite on the same scale. I really tired to get into Warcry, but as much as I enjoyed the ruleset, the content was just too all over the place and hard to source. Instead I've been exploring indy and homebrew skirmish games like Necropolis28, Relicblade and Brawl Arcane. I'm hoping to try Sword Weirdos out soon too.

I think they're doing pretty well with Warcry. Rules are good and available for free online, along the rules for individual factions, scope is acceptable for newbies, you can play pretty much any AoS model they sell.. and I see a lot of new players picking the game up. Cheap and easy starter would help, but I still think, that this is currently the best game from GW and also the easiest to start despite the lack of starter set
@RichieWitch
@RichieWitch Жыл бұрын
You make a lot of good points, and it shows in the game community in our area. We have four games stores in our area (2 GW, 2 indie). None of them host Warcry events and when asked, they don't hear any requests for them. One of the GW stores had one a few months ago, and my gf and I were the only ones who showed up. We got started in the game by picking up a box of Bladeborn at Barnes & Noble for $50. This was a great introduction to Warcry. Too bad it's now out of print because it provided a streamlined, beginner-friendly version of Warcry, most of the tokens and dice, and all the models in the set can be combined to make a Slaves to Darkness warband. This meant we only needed to pick up another warband, craft some terrain, and buy a set of battleplan cards to start playing the full version of Warcry.
@wargamesontoast
@wargamesontoast Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a perfect way to start Warcry actually. My local stores don’t run Warcry at all, but you know what they do run? Underworlds. From what I’ve seen that game is EXCELLENT, but having a direct competitor to your own game, in the same universe, and having it also be a Skirmish game, has to have an impact on Warcry. Warcry is such a tight system, and seeing it not having as much support and player count is just sad.

Something to comsider is that AOS isnt nearly as popular as 40k so you cant really compare warcry sales to kill team. The original box and the catacombs box took a while to sell out. The kill team ShadowVaults set shouldn't be considered the standard. its considered a botched release (release a box several months early and dont make enough of them to fulfill pre-order). All of the previous season kill team box sets (chalnath, octarius, moroch and Nachmund) stuck around for a while before selling out. into the dark even is still easy to find and i bought it at a deep discount (like 40% off). ShadowVaults was a botch job. they simply are underproducing kill team this year. they reprinted the rogue trader models and now theyre sold out everywhere. Blooded, sold out everywhere. Kasrkin box, sold out almost immediately everywhere. they cant even keep up with just the basic kits.

No that’s certainly a fair point. I do recall the starter set for KT being hard to grab as well because then Orks we’re lovely. I do think it’s unfair to compare sales so I didn’t spend too much time comparing, but I think it’s absolutely fair game to raise eyebrows at the lack of support. This is my first GW game I started buying for in January. While I have experience with other IP’s like Bolt Action, Legion and X-Wing… it’s been an interesting treasure hunt trying to find things to buy for this game. I agree, that is making it tough for newer players. I’d have to say that their official GW builder on their community page, not displaying stats for the units you want to build a warband with, is also a surprise. Is this all to just sell books like the compendium???

I'm trying to get started in warcry right now. I was a warhammer player when i was younger(15 years ago) and warcry and kill team seemed like ideal places to jump back in without committing to larger armys. i ordered the new nightmare quest box thinking it was a "starter set" sort of box. I'm running into this issue right now and finding it very discouraging. These exact issues of needing to buy multple books, not having appropriate tokens, ect is really frustrating and is honestly feeling extremely tempting to try and find pirated verions of the books online. I spent $200 on a box that i thought would at least get me started. now i find out I need to buy at least the core book and really should probably get the compedium as well and even then I don't really have everything you should to start. Your comments on how GW could improve Warcry on-boarding are right on point. Here's what I'd recommend for Warcry: 1. An evergreen 2-player starter set, like the Kill Team ($99 price point, two teams, small-format core rulebook, dice, ruler, 1 or 2 generic terrain sprues). This should *always* be in print. They can change out the warbands every year or two, if they want, but a starter set should always be available. 2. Extend seasons to two years, with semi-annual box sets. Include the season's generic terrain sprues in the first box, then move it to a stand-alone box for the rest of the season once the second box comes out. Boxes 2-4 in each season should include only the unique terrain sprues, to cut the price down to $140-$150. Redundant terrain sprues kept me from buying boxes 2-4 from the Heart of Ghur season. 3. Make the seasons terrain a more broadly useful than the meat forests were. Part of the value of the seasons concept was that if you bought multiple Warcry boxes, you accumulated enough terrain to populate a full-sized AOS table--but the Ghur meat trees and bamboo platforms really don't lend themselves to AOS-sized armies. The whole season had a very "guerrillas-in-the-jungle" feel, which just doesn't work with full-sized armies. The theme was another reason for me *not* to buy the subsequent season boxes. 4. Create a "Getting Started in Warcry" PDF, with an onboarding roadmap laid out in very simple terms. I'm not talking about a stripped-down rulebook here; I'm talking about a what-to-buy guide for people considering starting the game.
@wargamesontoast
@wargamesontoast 10 ай бұрын
This is all great stuff. I’d like to add that I got burned out with seasonal boxes very quickly. The models were great but it was almost a chore to buy them all in these big boxed sets. Not only that, the current Warcry Starter is, imo, terrible. Not enough models to actually play a standard game of Warcry and not a single piece of terrain that plays into the awesome terrain rules that make Warcry so dynamic. It feels like an Underworlds set that was tarted up - because it WAS an Underworlds set tarted up. Honestly, as much as I love Warcry, I can’t help but feel like it’s on life support atm. Held together with a vague promise of seasonal content that will burn the player base out all the while alienating new players with inadequate onboarding and a wildly imbalanced competitive scene. Feeling less and less motivated the more I think about it. I could be doomsaying though, who knows?

@printandplaygamer7134 10 ай бұрын
@@wargamesontoast I think a lot of the problem with Warcry is that it's the game with the smallest fan-base of its open-ended games, and that fan base just isn't large enough to support GW's usual (lazy) marketing strategy of selling more stuff to the same people, rather than trying to sell the same stuff to new people. There aren't enough Warcry players that are so dedicated that they buy every big box set. And three months is just too damned often to buy two warbands plus a full board of terrain--especially if you're trying to keep up with Kill Team at the same time, as I'm sure many skirmish game players do. I strongly believe that both games would fare better, in the long run, if they released two big boxes per year--at most--alternating quarters: Kill Team in Q1 and 3, Warcry in Q2 and 4, or vice versa. I *hope* that if GW does abandon the game, or allows it to languish, that a fan-supported community will keep it alive, as happened for Mordheim and Blood Bowl. Warcry is the best-designed rule set GW currently offers; it's a pity that they can't figure out how to promote and support it better. But four big boxes of meat trees in a single year was a MAJOR mistake. How could they not see that in advance?

This video is the perfect encapsulation of how I feel rn. I've never played a tabletop game, but started painting recently. I know basically nothing about any of the games. My brother on the other hand is really into Horus Heresy. I wanted to get into Warcry since I prefer the fantasy aesthetic but there's just no good way to get in. I assumed I would be able to buy a simple 2 player starter set to play together but it isn't really there unless I want to go to ebay and pay over the odds. I've already painted some Gutrippaz (from Dominion boxes broken up ebay) and would ideally like to use them. I don't want to go buy a big box with complicated factions, buy the rule book and then buy the army books if I'm not sure I will even like it.... I've already spent a lot of money on painting and building stuff. At this point I'm probably just gonna wait until the new 40k starter set is out and try that instead, though I really don't like the idea of needing a huge army, complicated rules and a lot of time to move so many models around. Sadly the only way to get cards is to buy one of the big boxes like Heart Of Ghur. There are missions in the Core Rule Book too, but the selection process is far less smooth than just drawing cards.

I'm a brand new player and new to Warhammer in general, only started collecting and painting a couple months ago. Hello from Texas USA! I think Warcry, as long as GW sticks with it, will begin to pick up growth, Warhammer as a franchise is starting to crack the mainstream. Between Total War Warhammer 3 getting a ton of good press, Henry Caville trying to get a 40k TV series going, Vermintide and Darktide(Despite the issues), and the upcoming Space Marine 2 game, public knowledge of the Warhammer universe seems to really be picking up steam. I think GW got caught in a weird spot with this seasonal release schedule. 4 boxes that are supposed to culminate into a full size Age of Sigmar board using matching themed terrain, only the first box in the set acting as the starter box (Heart of Ghur) having the actual core rules and tokens included with the rest being just expansions to it. Heart of Ghur and the subsequent boxes appear to have been designed specifically for existing and invested Warcry players. GW may have thought that they had already reached all potential new players and wanted to focus on expanding the world for the fans, but now they have a new wave of people that are interested in the Warhammer universe but prefer the fantasy aesthetic over 40k. I'm building a Khorne army for AoS so I picked up Bloodhunt to have a fully playable game at home between lugging my army to my local store (and get those SWEET Claws of Karanak models), and was absolutely shocked to find it had no rules, no tokens, and no tools to help play the game. I had to hunt down all of that online and hand make my own tokens. Once I actually was able to get a game going though, it was FANTASTIC, such a fun game with interesting mechanics and so much meat to sink your teeth into. I really hope people will get the chance to experience it for what it is, a truly great game that more than fills the gap between the full scale AoS battles. The terrain for Heart of Ghur I think can still fit into a generic fantasy setting as long as you get a little creative with the paint scheme. I'm planning on gluing flock to the trees to cover up the claws. My hope is that GW recognizes this influx of players, finishes out this Heart of Ghur block, and then releases a proper starter kit that stays in stock with generic fantasy themed terrain. I don't think Warcry is in any danger of getting killed off since it's only fair that their games mirror each other, 40k to AoS, Kill Team to Warcry, both feed into each other. Anyway, sorry for this big block of text, liked and subbed, I enjoy these vids! Let's hope you're just one of the first of a growing community of Warcry Centric content creators. Do you plan to do Battle Reports in the future?

This is all great stuff, and makes sense. Your new player experience is exactly what I expected would be the case, but I’m glad you pushed through because Warcry is excellent. Super tight system that’s a lot of fun to play. Also, those Karanak models? Beautiful. Totally agree. Thanks for supporting the channel. I would love to make battle reports, but it’s rather intimidating truth be told. When you look at other channels and their huge studios and multi-camera setups and crew…I fear mine would pale in comparison haha. I might give it a whirl though. If anything, it would be a fun experiment!

Blood Bowl is their best game but I'll give warcry a close second 😉 I'm very casual in the game. I got in a few months after Ghur's release. I prefer skirmish to army and that informed my choice a lot. I also got into the game specifically because I could field monsters. Shortly after getting into it my big things got nerfed which sucks for me but from what I'm hearing a lot of other people were happy about it and I'm not stranger to it. I'm still having fun with it but a few issues: -The majority of factions are just humans in cosplay (I always pick something that isn't humans because I play fantasy games to experience fantasy). This is a personal preference thing but "the human in spiky armor faction" describes a fair few of the factions. -There is no centralized database for US tournaments. I've tried asking around in Facebook groups or other players and no one can indicate a solid way to find events! Blood Bowl has the NAF, card games have primary websites or apps that list official events, etc. I would cover a warcry event if I knew where any existed. -When I talk to game store workers or call to see if they have certain Warcry product I have to describe it to them because nobody ever knows what I'm talking about. If I didn't do my own research I would have been sold into some other game instead. Overall I like the game a lot and will continue enjoying it but it would be cool to see the community come together as one community in some sort of centralized online location. Also love the channel. It's perfect for leaving on at work.

As an outsider, i agree with a lot of what you said. It seems like a way to get a little more money out of people already playing AoS. It feels like it should be the other way around. They should make Warcry cheap and approachable to get a huge audience knowing that some percentage of that audience will become AoS whales. If you look at Magic the Gathering, Commander is the casual format that keeps an absolutely massive playerbase engaged even if they never play regular Magic. They also have a draft format which is really cheap to play once a month or so. Games Workshop could gain a lot by making Warcry a low cost entry point to suck in new players. Another big factor is LGS support. If i get into AoS or 40k, it will probably be by buying one box once or twice a year and then slowly painting it over the next few months. If my LGS did some kind of event to get people into Warcry or Kill Team, i would probably go for it. Like if we bought a box, we could use their snippers and hobby knives and glue for free for a few hours while they sold us on the game. Then next month they could sell a paint bundle with a certain number of paints and brushes at a reduced cost and they could do a "paint along" kind of thing. That would be huge- especially if my friends from the store were participating.

Warcry is super casual friendly with enough competitive chops to allow people to expand. It doesn’t get much support from GW when compared to their other games (even smaller ones like Kill Team or Underworlds) and frankly, most LGS in my area barely know it exists. It’s a real shame because Warcry really is their best game by a long way and it deserves more love. Not to mention the community is outstanding.

For rotmire creed I’d build the dude who can take a net, with a net. Your chaff can either go more defensive with spears or more aggressive with 2 weapons. I personally prefer spears since the +1T is very nice and the R2 is lovely. For Horns, your only real choices are on your desecraters(?). Shields or two weapons. In this case, I think both are fine so build for preference. Shield is a lot more resilient thanks to T5 but the two weapons plays into a more aggressive style which might be more your thing

So I play both Kill Team and Warcry. To me the biggest problem is the compedium teams eclipse the bespoke teams in every way. In Kill Team the compedium was a stop gap till there were more bespoke warbands, and while a few compedium teams are still viable, the bespoke teams are just better. This is a positive and a negative, its a positive because we can use our own Sigmar models. As a negative, whats the reason to purchase box sets, the terrain, or if you really like the warbands, but if you like the warband wait till they are released individually. Its really about the terrain. I know people don't like the fomo boxes, but GW just needs to print more specifically for KT at the moment or do multiple print runs, thats a different issue, and easily fix able. However if there is no incentive to buy the boxes, then GW will never know if the game is successful. Underworlds has been pretty successful, and you can't use other sigmar models, so to play you have to buy the boxes. They know pretty much how well the game is selling and if its popular, and if they should continue to produce it. Just my 2 pence.

Every edition every 3 years should have a starter set similar to the original one. A fair amount of platforms, basic warbands, rulebook, cards, dice, ruler etc. No fancy or funny rules. The current situation trigger to buy AoS army boxes, so bigger box is better to prepare a warcry warband with many options. I doubt this is a healty way for warcry itself, but for selling AoS boxes. Also warcry change its way from chaos to other factions. The range is bigger (maybe not selling rate for GW), but it has lost its chaose dark charm. Well , I play Kill Team and Titanicus , and am looking at Warcry , if any of the box sets do not contain full rules and everything you need to start , then this is dead in the water. All GW games are expensive , and in the current financial reality , people will not be buying a set with 2 teams and scenery , no dice , tokens or full rules. I certainly won't. I just got heart of ghur. I prefer fantasy over sci fi and initially looked at warcry but chose kill team instead because of the lack of a starter set without looking on ebay. The fomo and inability to actually get any kill team sets except the starter has completely killed my interest in it so i looked to war cry again. The other things that put me off initially were the fact that it seems at 1st glance to only be variations of human chaos warbands and im more interested in other factions, i also found the ghur terrain to be a little offputting, especially the weird trees, though i like it more over time. I have a 6 year old child who is intrigued abd war cry seems the best warhammer game to try with kids. He needs a warband that looks like good guys though, not evil looking chaos guys. Im thinking of getting the nightmare quest but i dont like the ghouls and my kid definitely will hate the ghouls. The stormcasts are 100% to his taste though. I hope they do some bespoke teams for other factions like orks, elves etc to make it easier to just pick up a warband rather than trying to work out what works for a warband from aos boxes.

I'm sticking to One Page Rules skirmish games and ol' 3d printing. I wouldn't mind paying $300 if I could get full warbands, full terrains and full accessories in one single purchase, specially if you consider taxes, shipping and everything you have to pay for individual stuff. GW feels is managed by clowns sometimes, or there are just simply too many people throwing money at them and they lost interest on being the best.

Have you seen the spoilers? There seems to be a starter set on the way with two underworld warbands (Stormcast vs. Vampire) and a few ruins and fences. Maybe GW looked at the issue of a missing starter set and figured something out ;-) Like you. =) I personally love that all rules are online and sorted by factions. But I see your point that having cards for your fighters "feels" much better than looking into a pdf. In my opinion Warcry was invented as an alternative for AoS player to have smaller games for fun. Especially the first season of Warcry had a lot of "fun" in it. What I mean are non symmetrical games. Not only in terrain and set-up, but also multiplayer games, having an attacker and a defender with distinct perks or the whole concept of twists! Underworlds on the other hand had a more competitive approach with specific models, cards and more board gaming than tabletop. So, I think Underworlds and WarCry do not compete even if they play inside the same narrative of AoS.

I missed the initial starter box, and without it I can never seem to get the wandering monsters that came with it- I have had to sub in all kinds of other things- which is ok but I actually want to have the real things. I went backwards from Beastgrave to get the previous Warhammer Underworlds boxes and even the WU Starter set, and I would do the same instantly if GW put out a permanent Warcry Starter Box. Next up is the cards issue- I hate trying to play the game out of a set of books, and don't like the idea of playing with crappy photocopies/ prints from the pdfs. I would gladly buy a box of updated cards every year- just sell them to me GW! Lastly, as for basic terrain, I had to source and 3d print some- which works out very well, but that took a lot of time and expense- I would have gladly used the core terrain form a core starter box. Maybe GW is watching the barometer of content creators like you are. The lack of a starter box is a big problem, but another is that if you don't want one of the few custom teams, you have to buy whole boxes of a unit just to get one or two models. The secondhand market for 40k is much larger than AoS (at least in the US) so individual models are easier to acquire.

This! I very briefly mentioned it in the video, but this is a huge kick in the teeth for the AOS Compendium Factions.

Yes you did. Sorry, I meant to say that I agreed with you and ALL of your points, though the ones I mentioned are the biggest impediments for us. The mention of Underworlds was interesting. We had not considered that game.

If a Warcry warband takes you an evening to paint, a 40K army shouldn’t take you a year. more like 2 weeks to a month at most.

@lberghaus oh totally. My go-to army for 40K is orks though…so I will admit I have a crazy bias. My armies tend to be faaaaaar larger than my warbands haha
