Join me as I dip back into this fantastic map and try to figure which lake I'm at based on the limited information I'm presented with. I was confident I could go one better than last week's (almost) perfect score today but with no aerial shots and a couple of tricky rounds, some of these watery bodies had me rather stumped.
I reckon you're in with a chance of beating my score today, so be sure to play along!
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to KZfaq to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!

The US/Brits/Aussies can’t agree on the pronunciation of “Oregano” so I think the part of Tom’s brain attempting to say it right are crossing wires with the herb. And definitely, at this point it’s a bit of an inside joke with himself to even try to get it right. Plus, areas of the US call it Or-a-gon like a got dang polygon. I like the focus and attention on more obscure but still difficult maps. Basically all pros I've seen hover around A Community World or A Rural World, which is still great, but it can get repetitive after a while I feel like these types of maps are more friendly to someone who uses context clues but doesn't know EVERY meta and type of dirt road in East Russia

This is why Tom is my favorite Geoguessr player! He may not be participating in the competitive stuff, but he uses real context clues. It frustrates me when watching other players sometimes when they’re so sure of a certain place because of the meta, and then they find out they’re wrong because the meta they used was either wrong or updated.

Hey, big photosphere creator here. I wanted to say that the compass on user submitted photospheres are so bad because for the longest time you could not edit where North was from the original photo without using a paid service/software. This is mainly an issue with 360/spherical cameras (can see that by the lack of stitching lines), while photospheres (stitching in multiple parts of the photo) created by phone are more likely to have a good compass because of the smartphones compass and the app used to create the images are good. Also got the 2 American guesses correct here, mainly based on the Big American Trucks.

Tom, like you I nearly went mad looking round every North Western lake for Pumice Point, but it seems the point markings only showed up on one level of the map, so if you zoom in too far you don't see them. And the level of zoom you need to view those markings seems different depending on which state you were in. But on what seemed like my 50th attempt I found it by some miracle! And it only took me an hour and twenty minutes, it seemed a lot longer!!

An important clue in the last lake were the trees, the style of pine tree indicates inland climate and either higher altitude or latitude. Another clue is "Pumice" so it is a volcanic area, although may areas of northwest USA have a volcanic geology and pumice or cinder. The signage style is typical of many Federal lands such as national parks, wilderness areas, recreation areas, monuments, etc. Though again those lands are very common in the western half of the USA. However the fancy log fence and parking infrastructure tends to suggest a national park.

My game started well, got two perfect scores in the first two rounds. BTW Paphos is a city nearby that lake, which made that a lot easier. Then screwed everything up on the next three. Third round I correctly identified as US, but couldn't figure out what state it could be. Worst thing is I checked that lake, but it didn't seem like the scenery matched. Ended up going to New York, cause I just had no idea. Fourth round I thought was US again, but couldn't figure out where. Briefly considered British Isles, but again it didn't seem to match for some reason. Last round went largely the same as you, but ended up guessing Oregon instead. "Ranger" and the very nice truck should have been your best clues. Forest or park Rangers here in the states.

anybody know how the compass is supposed to work in a photo sphere? is there a right way up with the 360 camera? if it was photos stitched together are you supposed to align the finished product and then add the compass? is it just down to geoguessr with the photospheres and means nothing?

I got Montana because Ranger Scott is definitely American, and those were pine trees my boy.

I’ve only been to yellowstone once but on that round I thought to myself that it looked a lot like yellowstone!

As someone who has spent the last 8 years split between Montana and Wyoming, those two rounds were painful to watch 😅

I know right!? Geowizard must know too cause I paused on his Yellowstone lake speedup and went frame by frame. the point "he didn't see" was edited out as the video skips past this. haha
