You are 100% correct. This is what I have observed over the course of 4 years working with Etsy. I have obtained a definite result that Etsy cannot be relied upon as a stable source of income because the earnings fluctuate significantly throughout the year and are subject to many factors that confuse the seller.

If you're relying on any platform it's not guaranteed to be stable. Too many factors both on and off the platform. But then again, no business is guaranteed to be stable, because if they were no business would ever close down.

@@KaraBuntin You're right, but before I started using Etsy, I watched several videos that talked about a steady monthly income, but it turned out to be completely false information. The current period is extremely bad, and I believe the algorithm has wiped out the entire listings' history because the traffic has become almost nonexistent. Even activating ads has no benefit, despite them taking about half a euro per click. I sell t-shirts, and the profit margin is low, so I no longer pay any attention to the store as long as Etsy only thinks about itself

It's been a chaotic cycle for over 3 weeks : drop in traffic and no favourite at all, drop in visits, and suddenly boom 50 favourites in one day and successive orders the day after. It felt like some customers was waiting for my shop door to reopen and Etsy got the key! Very interesting the other algoritm tailored to your visit and purchase behavior. Very good advice as usual. That makes sense, I go from having regular sales every day then all of a sudden 2 or 3 days nothing, I would say this happens once a month, then boom they are back 👏 I wondered why this happens, thanks for that explanation Kara xx

This video made me feel SO much better. I promised myself I wouldn't be that person that says "My sales are slow.. anyone else?" I have anxiety and wayyyy over thing things.. I feel like 1-2 bad sale days the sky is falling. Just gotta breath and let Etsy work itself out... things usually go back to normal in a day or so..

Good explanation! Here's the definition of algorithm that I had to memorize freshman year when I got my Computer Science degree. It's the set of steps required to solve a problem. People think of algorithms as some mysterious thing but everyone uses them daily Recipes are algorithms.

I personally like the discovery algorithms, I know some find it creepy or annoying, but it’s how I found your channel a year or so ago and it’s how now I’m able to find the genuine small and handmade shops on Etsy. I often can’t find what I want or need with search alone. It’s frustrating, but if I search something leave it alone and come back to it the next day I’ll find something interesting. It’s how my stuff has been found on Etsy too!

Same here. Just 3 sales in the last 3 months. It's never been this bad. Still get a lot of traffic but hardly any sales. I tried Etsy ads..got a lot of favorites but again no sales 😢 waste of money. I see other shops with far fewer listings and their pictures (and sometimes their products even) are medicore quality and they are getting so many sales. I just don't get it.

My sales went WAY down in late Feb and are just now starting to pick up agian slowly, but when I look at my stats the only thing that has decreased is etsy search results. Everything else is up. So etsy has done something that has effected me for months now :/

If your Etsy app traffic is up, that includes search on the app. So it could just be that more people are using the app than desktop now.

Since around the 20th of March, I lost 50 % of my traffic and sales, after 4 successful and stable years. Star seller, most listings have videos, I ship in less than 3 days... I stayed calm in April but I need to find answers asap and I have no clue of what I should do 😅 This spring season on Etsy is... challenging if I may say so 😂

Hello, thank you for your useful video 🙌 There's something I'm wondering about. Is our store appearing at the top of searches related to the store's total clickthrough/sales rate, or is it just the product's clickthrough/sales rate? You may have seen some shops, SEO is almost non-existent, product photos are of poor quality, the number of products in the shop is insufficient, but they have great sales. I have almost 3,000 sales, everything has been going great for about 1 year, but especially in the last month, my sales have dropped by 50%. This feels so bad... There is almost no difference in quality between me and my competitors, the review left in my shop is very high (800) according to my sales count, but I still can't sell enough...

It’s mostly based on the product sales rate. Your shop quality score is part of it, but if there’s a listing that Etsy sees is selling, they’ll keep showing it even if nothing else in your shop is selling.

Is it better to sell on more than one source than to be loyal to just one source? I have not been selling on Etsy but a few months and am only getting a few sales per month. According to what I have seen on KZfaq this is normal. I sell door wreaths and the average price is around $100 up $135 which is on the higher side of the wreaths that are listed for sale.. The wreaths are of a very high quality, very large and very eye catching so they are in the right price range. Anyone browsing can tell immediately that they are in the right price range and if they are looking for this size and quality when they are browsing mine should catch their attention. Of course I fall in the end of the listings and if they aren’t really searching thoroughly then they probably don’t see mine. I feel like they find something that they want before they get to mine. What do you suggest I do to get my sales up to a higher level?

I would do all the normal things, list in a few different places online, promote on social media, etc etc, but I would also look into selling in person this year. A lot of people seem to be having good sales at in-person venues locally.

Would an algorithm look at buyers' habits based on time of day/week/year & make listings more or less visible, for example, "this shop has lots of sales on Monday evenings & in April, therefore, we'll show it more in search during these times". Or "they're slow on Fridays so let's reduce visibility"

I don’t know, they don’t tell us that kind of stuff. Anything is possible, and based on what they said in the investor presentation yesterday they could be trying a lot of different things.

What I see in my shop sometimes is that even people with same name is order after order. That happened not just once or twice but many times. Is that just coincidence or not, nowbody can tell for sure. But that what I see occasionaly

Hi, I'm really struggling to maintain my sales. I was selling approx. 60 to 80 items in previous months but the last month has seen us drop down to 20, which is devastating. In March I got 250 hits a day everyday (on average a day) but now (MAY) they are down to 145-155. Any hints or clues as to what's best?

My shop has visits only for the listings that were recently bought, and this spiral drives me crazy! The listings in the other shop section (which I try to promote the most!) have the same kind of SEO that drove visitors for the repeatedly bought listings, but it doesn't work the same way. And all that happened since the beginning of April, and I really don't know what to do. Any thoughts?

Etsy has always shown things that sell in search results, and kind of ignored things that don’t sell. That creates a cycle of selling certain things all the time. It’s going to probably get more pronounced as they start adopting more suggested search type stuff, based on what they were talking about in the investor presentation yesterday. I’ll talk about that in next week’s video.

Same. Only mine went to about 2 orders a week. I’ve added new items, tweaked my shop, made better photographs, do consistent social media posts etc. nothing helped. I’m trying to find a regular job now. I tried a website for two years and got one sale on it and that was from a friend. I can’t play the waiting game.

Hey Kara! I just started my Lightroom presets shop a few months ago and started running Etsy Ads last month and slowly increased them every week by $5, but then I decided to increased them $15 at once a couple days ago, and my sales stopped 😫, my traffic is still high but I haven’t gotten sales these last couple months, could the reason be that I suddenly increased them by so much!? I’m so worried I’m not getting anymore sales but keeping the same traffic 😞

If you're keeping the same traffic then the ads spend isn't the reason, it's something else. Problem is, it could be any number of things, including a crappy economy, summer starting (sales tend to slow down this time of year), more competition, more use of AI and less lightroom, less demand, who knows. Do you do any of your own promotion, or do you only use ads?

@@petalsjones If this happened that suddenly and your traffic is completely gone your shop might not be indexed, but that's really unusual. You should probably contact Etsy support to see if there's a technical problem. But if you can find your shop and listings in search results, that's not the problem. It could be something with the algorithm shuffling your shop and listings around and placing them lower in search.

Sales on Etsy has gotten so slow that it seems the only time of year it's worth trying to sell on Etsy is during the Christmas shopping season. From September to December. The rest of the year is dead.

I sell clipart, sometimes my 10/10 (in my opinion) clipart that is phenomenal has literally 0 views, and sometimes mediocre clipart out of nowhere starts selling like crazy. What do I do with the ones I think are good but are dead? 1. Create a new offer, new title and new mockups? 2. Ads? 3. Changing tags/title? 4. Maybe try lowering the price for a week or two. I will point out that most of these dead lists are 2 months+. It demotivates me terribly. I know that the power lies in the number of offers and you have to make lists until some part catches up. It wouldn't bother me if it wasn't for the fact that some clip arts that I spend 10-20 times more time on and are phenomenal have literally 0 views, and such mediocre ones sell systematically. I will add that my conversion is very good 4.8-5.2%, so these 0 views are not a matter of very poor clipart (I think so, but I don't know...). I would like them to be displayed to anyone and even lower my sales, but I would know that the problem lies in the designs, not in the algorithm.

You need to understand that art is in the eye of the beholder, and some people think that a banana taped to a wall is high art. It's pretty common that the things that we love don't sell, but the "meh" ones do. Part of that is that they get picked up and shown to more people so it's just a matter of getting eyes on it, but there's usually no explanation. You shouldn't take it personally!

@@KaraBuntin It makes perfect sense to me and I thank you for that. However, it doesn't help me with my main problem. My problem is not that people don't like my work and I have a 0% conversion rate. My problem is that I have absolute 0 visits (Literally 0, I'm not writing this to reinforce the comment) to many listings after a few months and I am looking for a solution. What can I do to try to revive the offer and get some impressions.

@@Noobuser95 Ah, okay...Is there a difference between how you have the listing photos for the good ones vs the mediocre ones? Take a really critical look to see what could be preventing people from going to one of the other. If it's being found in search (which is hard to tell unless you can find it for a specific search term, or using filters to narrow things down,) then it's not an indexing issue, but there has to be something that makes people not click on the listing when they do see it.
