16mm is such a stunning medium. The 'digital look' is ever-changing but film always feels familiar - maybe that's why people describe it as a 'timeless' look? Shot for the experience Bru!

Well done, informative and entertaining. Too often I find videos about shooting on film to be full of inaccuracies and poorly researched. Thanks for doing the homework and getting things right. Doing the same scenes on both formats and getting shots of people and places was much more useful than focus charts in a studio. I'm going to show this to my cinematography students. Bravo!

I had the privilege of shooting 16mm for two of my shorts and I have to say it is super fun and rewarding. I think using the tool that fits your project is important and if I am going to spend the effort of writing a script, hiring actors, and putting together a crew for a short film it is worth it to go the extra mile and shoot it on 16. The iPhone footage works for a vlog, but the depth of field feels fake and digital, the sharpening is too crisp, and you can tell it is shot on something cheap. For the same price you could get a mirrorless cam and probably fix all of those issues, but the feel that film gives will still be superior in my mind. The other fun thing about film is that you don't just get a digital file at the end of it. You get a physical reel that you can throw on a projector. It is a tangible reminder of the thing you spent a lot of time and effort on. Thank you Dan for doing this experiment!.

"With film you really have to think of every shot". Couldn't agree more with this and think that's what makes film so special. You only get x number of shots or minutes you can get out of it so every second is just as important as the next. I also think cause of this it forces you to think out the box and try get shots you wouldn't have gotten if you just had a digital camera. Anways keep up the work! Really love the videos and appreciative of your efforts !

The best quote I’ve read is even the very best camera won’t make a dull and boring bad photo (or video) look good, it has to be well composed with the right light in the first place. In this KZfaq clip the video content was interesting enough and well edited enough to make the iPhone look good.

It's amazing what a WORLD of a difference there is between these two cameras (even though they're almost literally the same edit). The 16mm has a more warm, nostalgic, raw feel to it while the iPhone has a more "produced" (ironic, right?), artificial vibe. On a separate note, it'd be nice if the iPhone camera had a way to slightly unsharpen the footage

While the iPhone has obvious better image quality less noise etc I must say one thing. The artificial blur in the "cinema mode" and "portrait mode" etc looks disgusting. Edges are blurry and the effect is nothing like real depth of field. Like a weird glow throughout large parts of the video.

I just want to say that I appreciate that amount of effort that you put in to this video. Its amazing! As far as the comparison.. I will always lean towards the vintage look. But that look can be achieved in post.. won't have the character though.. 16 mm had texture and ambience can I say that about a film. it added something really special and even though all the pictures were the same content, ambience, qualities of the whole frames and the whole continent were just not the same at all it was magical versus clinical

This is why im going to shoot in LOG and then do film emulation, you dont have to carry a whole cinema cart around but still get a fairly similar, more stylized look
