Our break command(s) Hike: this is our most used. When we are out and about for our walk, whether off leash or on an extension leash, I alternate between stroll, which is healing at my right hand side, and hike which is explore, lift a leg and pee on a bush, sniff around and so forth and so on. I gave the word a lot of thought. For one thing I like to go hiking and I like my dog to enjoy the hike as well. Additionally he hikes a leg and pees on bushes. My physical mobility is seriously compromised and I want to give him more exercise than I can join him doing, up a hill, down a gully, running ahead... Hike is a great word that encompasses it all. Lead: This is his release word to proceed me through a doorway and casually explore whatever is on the other side of the threshold. Enjoy: At dinner time I require Phoenix to maintain eye contact with me and follow a command or two or 10 before his dinner. Enjoy is the word that will release him to eat his dinner and do whatever he wants to afterwards. Clean up: Most of the time Phoenix is required to ignore food fallen to the floor. This is critical as he is a service animal. Cleanup means he may eat anything his nose can help him find on the floor under the table or in the kitchen or wherever we happen to be.

Also just an add on: at some point would you ever create a video for a “training schedule” ? I find my training to be kind of sporadic. We aren’t always working on the same thing everyday. Or I am not sure what my goal should be for that day. Would you ever make a video on your suggestions for day 1, day 2 ect? Bit long winded. But thank you!

Hi. I am in the East San Francisco Bay Area. I just adopted a 2-year-old Pit Terrier mix. I have had him for 3 weeks, and we are starting to make progress. He is not fully housebroken, as he was ib the shelter for a long time. He was adopted twice and returned, as he is a nuclear powered little 43 pounder, who jumps up on people and is still a little mouthy, I have got him trained to stop jumping on me, and now I am correcting him with the pinch collar when he jumps on others. The correction is not hard. I am working on housebreaking, I take him out to the backyard 5 times a day and reward him when he poops out there. He is very food motivated and is very attached to me. He literally goes everywhere I go. He stands outside of the shower (I am trying to show him how much fun it is so he will join me), follows me to the bathroom, and everywhere else, I love him. I am tapering him off of the TRazedone that the vet at the county had him on, and transitioning him to low dose CBD treats. I just found you, so I will hold my questions until I have watched your library. I really like your approach and friendly demeanor.

We used to use "OK" as well until we heard the story that convinced us not to. A friend of a friend was walking his well trained dogs off leash. For simplistic reasons, I am shortening the story, but you will get the gist. While off leash they were about to cross a fairly quiet road to enter the off leash park when a car was approaching. One dog had already crossed the road (so owner had dog do a sit stay from across the road) while the owner and second dog stayed on the sidewalk. The dog that stayed with his owner was of coarse very eager to cross the road to be with his buddy and run & play, but he waited in the heal position. However, a human friend came along and as he approached the guy and his dog he asked his friend how he was doing. Without thinking, the owner said "OK". Sadly the dog thought the "OK" was allowing him to "break"so he darted out in front of the moving car and was hit. The dog lived thank goodness, but we no longer use that word as a release command. This was such a fluke however, if changing my release command could even just potentially keep my dog safe, I'll take it! I just thought I would share this story, you can take what you want from it or not:)

I usually go “AH AH” and replace my arms with a toy so they can mouth on that instead shoving the puppy away and yanking your arm away this can signal play time for him. With the toy they’ll soon transition off your arms and onto toys and associate toys more with playtime than nipping people.

We have gotten to the point where he will wait at thresholds and look at me so that's good. The problem is that when we aren't in the living room and only the screen door is closed (this morning) he pops the screen door open and goes for a joy ride. Do you have any recommendations for that? He's been waiting at thresholds for round about 8 months; but again only when either my wife or I are there at the door, gate, etc. Thanks in advance brother! I really appreciate the hard work you and the crew have been putting in!

That was my thinking as well, set him up to think nobody’s paying attention❣️ We had to do it with the automobile window rolled down, the door standing open for our RV and my aids automobile. Also while standing and enjoying conversation with the door wide open or not latched. It’s fun to think about potential training scenarios. You can even stage the distraction such as having your neighbor carry their cat to just out of eyesight and then let it go so your dog will want to chase it... basically anything that triggers your dog to lose control. When we begin this training the safety line needed to be on his neck collar. Now it can be clipped to his harness. The more we do this on purpose the more we all get to relax. Fortunate for me, Phoenixes former handler trained him with the command “DOG OUT!” Anytime he releases himself through a door way or over a threshold I can bark this command at him and he will do you an about face and return to me. When he gets to me he shows his belly and expects me to be 1000% on guard and in charge. I have no idea how this command was trained but I have been grateful for it more times than I can count. It’s very useful when we come up on a bunny rabbit dashing across our path, a kitty cat running from a bush, a dog not properly trained, playing with a puppy and the play getting a little too wound up... it was actually while playing with a nine month old puppy as large as he was that I learned he expected ME to keep the puppy away once Phoenix showed me his belly.

Do you want your dog to be enriched by your walk, or are you looking for obedience? (and have the enrichment in the backyard for instance) An environment with higher stimuli requires stricter behavior, but a walk in a forest doesn't need much micromanaging. So in a forest you can heel and release him quick and often, which is great to get the repetitions, and it leaves plenty of opportunity to enjoy the freedom you give him. In a town or city their freedom is much more limited to what the situation allows, so it's important to be more conscious about their release. Bushes, pee spots, other dogs or people, food smells etc are good ways for him to enjoy the freedom you give him, and can be a source of frustration if you don't let him. Which you sometimes shouldn't. Sidenote; I personally don't command my dog to heel in highly stimulating environments, but instead reel in her leash. It's less frustrating for both if she's not under command when lots of distractions would otherwise push her limits. Then you have to navigate the crowd and over-manage them which just doesn't work and isn't really fair. Going around if possible is always better of course.
@ShepherdsCreek
@ShepherdsCreek 4 жыл бұрын
I think it is very much dependent on the situation and what you are looking to get out of it. Obedience and environment can both be excellent mental stimulation but are very hard to do simultaneously. If you are in a low risk area and you want your dog to be able to explore the environment and get enrichment that way, then a heel isnt necessary (as long as they arent being a jerk otherwise lol) but in a crowded area or heavy traffic or other possible dangers are present or if you are specifically working on obedience then heel would be necessary. It is also dependent on you and your dog so use your best judgement and do what you feel is best for your situation.
@kerrie.s
@kerrie.s 4 жыл бұрын
For my dog, she is expected to walk to heel until we arrive at a more ‘dog friendly’ area (forests, fields, parks etc.). Once we arrive she is put into a sit before she gets to ‘break’, then she can follow her nose, choose the direction, and enjoy herself for the duration. Then she gets put back into heel on the way home. I don’t expect a perfect heel position on the way there, because I know she’s excited to get where we are going. I won’t let her pull me (because she weighs almost as much as me), but she doesn’t have to be as far back as she would be when we are training. As long as she’s listening to me, stopping when I stop etc. then I am satisfied.
@Emma-fe6yt

I would probably begin with a pretty consistent heel, until the dog knows and responds immediately. But once the command is really ingrained in the dog, then it probably is situational like the others have said!

I do almost the same thing. I do "free" for release, "I'm good" from individual tasks, and "play time" for taking him off duty.

I'm from Sweden. Without a dog in my life since many years due to lifestyle unsuitable for having a dog. But I LOVE DOGS!!! Romeo reminds me of one of my dogs. Heartwarming. While not having a dog I prepare for being a good pack leader for my future dogs and I do that by watching clever people like you on KZfaq among other things. You are doing an important and good job! Keep safe.

Hi, I'm from Tasmania Australia. My shepherd's would heel to the left hind leg of my horse. My break word was finish and they would charge away with big grins on their faces. I also taught them the word here. It ment, come to me and stay within 3 to 4 feet of me until told to finish. Handy if you were riding past a paddock with stock in it.

Hi. Oklahoma here. Thank you for your videos! I got a 6 Week German Shepherd puppy 2 weeks before everything shut down. I had planned on enrolling him in training classes but, everything shut down! I seriously need to socialize the dog but hard to do right now. I do NOT want a mean German Shepherd! A mean dog goes from being a pet to being a liability. So, I'm watching as many videos as I can and working really hard with Kaiser (GSD) and it's going good. Lots of room for improvement I'm sure! I've relied on your videos more than any other videos. Thanks again.

I have a border collie mix who would play ball til she dropped. I quickly learned when she was a puppy that I needed to install an “off switch”. Transitioning from her ball obsession to what I wanted her/us to do wasn’t happening very well. I chose to use “break” to signal the END of playtime, signal the start of “this it what we’re doing now” & there is no arguing about transitioning to a different task. I even use break to signal it’s time for the crate. Best thing I ever did. She’s 5 now & I still use “break” all day for smooth transitions. I’m training our new puppy the same thing!

I like the break command, I use it daily durning feeding time when I put my dogs into a sit and wait. I increase the wait time and even move around some before I say break. It just dawned on me to use it at the threshold! Great tip and example.
