I love this video! Everyone always asks me what I mean by "meeting my dogs halfway," and this is exactly it! When you ask too much, your dog is almost guaranteed to fail, so we have to do our best to meet them where they are to help get to where we want them to be

@@tomdavisofficial I find that so many people want instant results. I have to remind them that they can only teach their dogs as fast as their dogs can learn. I especially like how you return to your dog to release him from "Stay"; I always teach this. I'm going to "steal" your reason why - to reward while they are still "staying". BTW - I also "stole" your "Break" and added it to my list of release words I suggest to my students.

Just started to watch all your videos. I put my service dog Raven to rest on 5/23/22 she was a Doberman. We did a board and train from the breeder we got her from and she came to us at 7 mounts. We did the rest of the training our self until she was put to rest at 7 years old. I cant tell you how watching all your videos helped us cope with the loss and also learned a lot of new techniques that we will use when we get our new pup the end of July. Thanks George and Stacy

Always so useful - getting ready to self train a new service pup for wheelchair work, physical service, walking mobility support, and psychological service and I find that going back to remind myself of the very basics always reinforces to me how to communicate and share with them what h want.

I really enjoy your calmness and patience with the dogs!!! You really explain the what and why well, too. But I must admit, I almost did not watch your videos when KZfaq first threw one at me.....MY bad.....I judged your book by its cover and nearly avoided you because of tatoos and pitbulls. Says far more about ME than anyone!!! Glad I watched. You do have a gift!!! As I have come to realize in recent years, everything I ever needed to know in life, I learned from my dog!!! And my dog would have known instantly that you're friend material because he was not taught the prejudices that I have carried and now wisely set aside. I'm nearly 60, female, raised Catholic and pretty much live under a rock in case anyone reads this and wonders about my background.

I have a BIG issue: I’m the “grandma”(with a pool) of my daughter’s 8 year lab. So coming to my house has always been a great treat. Well, we sabotaged ourselves because now when he comes for a week at a time (when she travels for work), he is in hyper-expectation drive…thinking every time I even move (like getting up from the sofa) he goes crazy; barking, spinning, etc. The nuisance barking is constant, and he is in such a frenzied state of mind he seems immune to me correcting him. How do we hit the reset button? And have you done a video about nuisance barking? Thank you!!!
@KannaIru
@KannaIru 2 жыл бұрын
As you’re aware, a lab has lots of mental and physical energy. He needs outlets but show the dog that it’s on your terms. When he manages to calm down for a few seconds THEN reward that with a game of tug or fetch. If he likes food, do short sessions where he gets a treat for sitting or lying still for a second, then building longer. Show him that only being quiet gets him rewarded and that there’s more to Grandma than the pool. Dogs do what’s rewarding, once you show him in small steps that he’ll only get that when he’s quiet, (if your reward timing is good) the dog will understand, and you’ll be able to burn his energy and get a calmer pup. Hang in there and good luck!
