I solved another first world problem with 3D printing! This time it's the terrible problem of having to slide two faders on a mixer with two mono channels for one stereo channel. I tried to 3D scan the knobs, but due to the dark background, this didn't work and I unfortunately had to make this difficult design. If you happen to have a Tascam Model 12 with this problem, let me know!

Hi guys! It has been a while since I solved a first world problem with 3D printing. That's what's missing from 3D printing YT community-functional prints. It's either figurines or parts to improve 3D printer to print even better figurines. Love this channel.

@@TheAnoniemo I guess he's talking about the usual really big ones. But I do agree, functional prints, to me, are so much more satisfying to design and make. I once had a broken toilet-lock, which is just a simple design. But I designed and printed it, fixed the issue and I never felt so excited with any of my other beautiful prints. :)

Great video. Love seeing the 'oh crap' moments whether staged or not. It adds something to the process that not all (well, that few) designs work 100% on the first (or several) iteration.

Thanks! The 'oh crap' in the first shot wasn't staged, and added a second more zoomed in angle to show it better (which was staged ;)) Second iteration worked! I was surprised that the knobs themselves fitted right the first time xD

My favorite design error to make with 3d prints is making a space for a screw or bolt and forgetting I'm not exempt from the laws of physics - I can't just phase my hand through the print to place it there. Almost as fun as forgetting to make clearance for moving parts 😛

Hahaha that moment you realize it only works virtually like that😆 It feels good though if you tackle such a problem on beforehand. Only a shame that most people would think: "he clearly ran into this issue and worked his way around it"

This is _EXACTLY_ why I bought my first 3d printer; I think I spent the first twelve months looking around the house/car/anything for poorly designed stuff that I could "upgrade".

It's always fun running into issues like this. It's hard to justify purchasing a 3D printer on beforehand for these cases, but once you've one up and running it's super handy!

A splendid modification - but !.... My 1978 Calrec mixer had Aluminium half pipes that bridged two faders - and could quickly be removed. Also, My 1986 Studer mixer had similar fader links made of perspex - that could also be quickly removed. We didn't have 3D printers though! By 1999 we had motorised faders and we could link ten faders to one at a simple touch.

Nice Roland piano you got there. Used to play in rock bands, my fav keyboard was my old Roland Juno 60, kept it till about 10 years ago, got a pretty nice price out of it. It was old, I bought it used in the 80s but it never gave me any issues. Big fat sound other brands could only dream of back then.

Thanks! I bought that piano a long time ago with literally all the money I had. I actually "needed" a laptop for school😆 The Juno 60 looks very cool and awesome that you played in rock bands! I made music with some friends, but never actually performed.

Love this, functional prints are what got me into this hobby and I do them still. Very few of my prints are for show and shine, the have to fulfill a purpose, otherwise it's a waste of filament :D

I would have designed a solution you can disengage/uncouple like the two braking circuits (that come with two braking pedals) of some tractors

me meanwhile with an X32 Core (or any digital console) - liked faders on an X-Touch where a motor attached to the fader keeps stereo linked channels faders in step. Most normal people would use the stereo in channels 7/8 or 9/10 - The quarter-inch TRS sockets for the Right channels are still connected to a mic pre just like the XRL connector used for the Left Channel. The engineers thought of this already and provided stereo channels that likely have calibrated Cricut so the levels match with in a decent tolerance. Assuming this is a tascam Model 12 or in the same family.

Odd thing about this mixer is that the computer's output is routed to channels 1 and 2. In my opinion it would make more sense to use 9/10 like you mention. Also, this is not the most serious video I put out there😅

very cool print, but this wont solve stereo tracking issue! the biggest contributor to this is the fact that faders and potentiometers have a massive tolerance(+/-20%), and are typically never matched between channels. If you will constantly be sending stereo signals to the same 2 channels, its best to solve it by calibrating the output level to the mixer in your daw by trimming one of the channels until it matches the other

Model 12 has 1-6 balanced inputs I would use a unbalanced to balanced cable and keep the pan in center

Thanks for your suggestion! Odd thing about this mixer is that channel 1 and 2 are used for the computer's output. I'd rather had it at the single 9/10 channel (which is possible to do with some ASIO tool patching workaround, but far from ideal). Another reason why I'm not using balanced inputs is because I use phantom power for the mic and I want to be safe. Let's say that I used this for a stereo instrument, wouldn't the instrument sound different when having both channels panned at the center instead of left and right? Genuine question, because in other cases with the cable you mention I did always pan the channels.

I thought of replacing the faders, but I have to store those faders somewhere because I don't want to throw them away. Eventually I'll loose those anyway, so this was the most convenient solution xD

I would have taken a picture from the side, correct for perspective, insert it as a canvas in fusion360, calibrate the image with a known dimension, and presto!

I don’t get why Mixer companies can put out ten Mixers a year but all of them are designed for live rock bands. Most small studios don’t use 12 mono channels.
