The Boston Marathon is one of the most well-known races in distance running, but it also lives in infamy with its convoluted weather conditions ever year. 2018 brought the worst weather seen in years for the race, and with elite runner dropping out after another, this resulted in the biggest double upset in quite possibly all of marathon history.

I remember watching the broadcast and counting out Kawauchi when he was leading the pack early on. Such a crazy race that demonstrates how variables can dramatically affect outcomes.

They were extremely petty and down right unprofessional. They have no idea how he trained. Apparently he trained to have a faster pace. If I had to guess, his goal was much like Muhammad Ali’s. Tire the opponent early on and break their spirit. The commentators didn’t have a clue!

Chuck Danger: Kawauchi is a much more accomplished amateur runner then any of the professional runners: he has zero sponsorship, he runs twice or three times more marathons then any professional runner and in tough conditions he is unbeatable and he has run 76 marathons under 2:20 , no one is even close.

I ran a PR at Boston ‘18. Almost went hypothermic and had a water table blow over in the wind onto me. Watching the leaders it’s hilarious how the team Nike white windbreakers look like parachutes. Kirui was probably losing 15 seconds of pace just because of the bad gear selection. I guess that’s one of the disadvantages of being sponsored. All of the white poncho team had a bad day.

The Nike athletes probably weren't ready for the conditions. Yuki ran a Sub-Zero marathon a few weeks before this race.

The way he wave his arm while running is a normal thing. In most SE Asia, runners do the same. Its an effective thing to boost endurance. Try it. Because it pumps more oxygen into to the lungs when the chest is stretched wide open upon waving the arms. Very effective if you are feeling exhausted while running.

Also when I use to jog everyday, I learned swinging my arms too sharply wasn't a good technique. Its better to keep your arms relaxed so there's less tension on them. Your elbows shouldn't bend less than 80° for most of the race. I learned this from swinging my arms the wrong way. As a result my arms got stiff and tired before my legs got tired. And having to run with stiff arms is *not* fun.

@@wesleytwiggs7687 you don't often see such brutal conditions, and watching how the runners delt with the added challenge was interesting. It's like snow in a region where it's rare, you know that it's going to happen a few days in advance, but it's still interesting.

Desi winning was a shock but she had been a quality runner for years. Described as a “Blue collar athlete” and the conditions were a blue collar like say. She can run 2:20 and that was proven when she ran the 50k in 2:59.

I am the exact opposite of an elite athlete, but I've run in many Nor'easters (not a marathon, though), and I gotta say that running in one is its own thing. It's a special kind of storm. No shade on the athletes who struggled to handle the conditions. Kudos to everyone who completed the race, as well as the winners.

It's not concrete, it's asphalt which is partly made of rubber material. Also, shoes exist for a reason, to protect your bare feet from the ground.
